chapter fifteen

- short lil filler chappie, not too important but not completely irrelevant -

/ @BooksNBandsNBooks requested that I post a picture of Miranda's hair and I couldn't find one to fit as I explained, so I tried my best to find two pictures to explain a bit what it looks like. It's a shitty edit thing but oh well, I hope it gets across -

Vanessa's point of view

"Hey," I said as I caught up to Miranda. "Ouch, you okay?" I asked, looking at her crutches and ankle brace.

"Kind of. Several people made fun of me, that's not fun." She said and I frowned a bit. "If someone else makes a comment, I might cry, not gonna lie."

"Don't worry, I'll jump on whoever decided to comment." I said and she nodded. We walked into class and sat down in our spots. I immediately took my notebook and pencil out, starting on the prompt.

How has music effected your life?

I began to write immediately about how it explains what I can't say myself, about how it helps me figure out who I am. It helps me get stuff done, helps me feel closer to people.

When I finished, I waited for Miranda and then took her paper when she said she was finished. I turned it in and then sat back down.

"Thanks." She said and I nodded. "I have food for lunch!" She said happily and I laughed. "I got money earlier and I went and got some Hot Cheetos, Arizona Tea, and gummies."

"No wonder why your ankle's broken, fatass." A girl beside us said and the teacher spoke before I could.

"Cynthia, watch your language in this classroom. Profanity is not allowed in here and bullying isn't either. Leave them alone or you will be leaving my classroom." The teacher said and I chuckled. "Practice hitting those notes, we all know you stress your voice."

She blushed and went back to her notebook and I rolled my eyes. "Bitch." I muttered and Miranda laughed as she took out the packet. "Practice with me?"

"Yeah, Queen first." She said and I nodded. I cleared my throat and she did the same. "You first, you sing higher than I can."

"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality," I sang and she smiled.

"Caught in landslide, no escape drop reality, open your eyes-" the girl who argued over the solo sang and I looked at her.

"Look up to the skies and see," we both sang, hitting the high not at the end.

We stared at each other, eyes narrowed as we sang the song. The teacher and our classmates watched us. The teacher was amused, everyone else seemed to mentally be taking a side.

"Mama, just killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger now he's dead," she sang and stood up.

"Mama, life had just begun, but now I've gone and thrown it all away-" I sang, Miranda cheering for me as I stood up myself.

"Mama, ooh, didn't mean to make you cry," we sang and people began to cheer with her. "If I'm not back again this time tomorrow, carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters."

"Girls," The teacher said and we looked at him. "How about we come to a conclusion, you split the solo?"

"It's not a solo if it's split!" She said and glared at me. "I was a better singer!" She claimed

"Vanessa!" Miranda chanted and people joined in, other cheering the other girl's name, Alejandra.

"Silence." The teacher said as he laughed. "Split the solos or someone else gets it girls." He said and she narrowed her eyes at me.

"We'll split it." I said and he nodded as he wrote it down.

"Given, something has happened the day of the concert. Professional singers and a record label will be attending so we must add one more song to the set to make it even. I'm aiming for slow, full of emotion and something that can grab ahold of someone's feelings and just tug on them." The teacher told us.

"I vote Jet Black Heart by 5 Seconds of Summer!" I said and a lot of other girls agreed with my while the few boys groaned.

"No!"

"Not them!"

"We already have One Direction!"

"Who votes the song?" A lot of other girls, plus myself, rose our hands and Miranda groaned since it was a majority vote. "Guess that's the last song. I'll print out sheets tonight and by tomorrow I'll have you all singing."

"Yes!" I cheered and Alejandra did the same. Caught up in the moment, we high fived and smiled.

Suddenly, as if she remembered to hate me, she pulled away and wiped her hand on her jeans. I rolled my eyes and sat down beside Miranda, who groaned loudly again.

"Might as well rip my throat out, I'm not singing 5 Seconds of Summer." She said and I laughed. "I'll just lip sing the entire time." She said and I nodded, telling her that was fine.

"Hey, um, do you think you can drop me off? My parents are working and I don't want to take the bus, or walk." She said and I shrugged.

"Michael's picking me up, I'll have to ask him." I said and she nodded as she shifted in her seat. "Anyways, your Quinceañera dress is fucking beautiful."

"It's kind of girly, but it's fine." She said and shrugged. "It's one night."

"I have to buy your present still, maybe I'll go on the weekend, I'm going to be hanging out with Calum anyways." I said and she nodded.

"Wait... isn't Michael the the one who dyes his hair?" She asked and I nodded. "Okay, just making sure. And Calum is the darker one?" She asked and I nodded.

"Alright class, group practice now. Everyone in their lines, Sopranos in front, everyone else behind in the correct order." The teacher spoke and I chuckled.

"This is where we part." I said, tapping Miranda's head and she rolled her eyes. I stood in front and she stood behind me, holding on to my arm since she didn't want to use her crutches as the moment.

-

"I'm not really a fan of All Time Low, like, to me, they're a little overrated. They're great musicians, Alec is a great singer, but their music is overrated to me." She aaid and I resisted the urge to facepalm.

"Alex, with an 'x'. Alex Gaskarth." I said and she rolled her eyes, reaching into the bag of hot cheetos. "You're overrated."

"Shut up, I can have an opinion." She said and rolled her eyes as she laughed. I ate a gunmy bear and she flipped her hair out of her eyes.

"Can I ask you a question?" She asked and I hummed. "I was on your instagram last night since I wasn't on in ages, and you posted a picture of being in a car with a bunch of junk food around you. I want to know, who were you with?"

"No one." I said and she rose an eyebrow, asking if that was my final answer. "Uh yeah, why?" I asked and she pulled her phone out after the yard duties passed.

She went to my picture and she showed me the picture. "That's not your hand." She said and pointed to a hand on my knee. "It's tattooed honey, you don't have tattoos and your hand isn't that big."

"Its's no one to be concerned of, come on, drop it." I said and she sighed.

"I'm looking out for you, if he has tattoos he's probably too old for you." She said and I laughed.

"As if I'd date Calum." I said and then covered my mouth. "Oh shit." I said and she rose both her eyebrows, nodding her head.

"Yeah, oh shit is right. Spill, all of it. Every detail. Down to what kind of Ben And Jerry's you had." She said and I huffed, looking around to make sure no one was around.

I started to explain what happened, from when she hung up the phone on me to when I fell asleep on Calum's shoulder. She looked at me and then pulled her phone out.

"What's his Instagram?" She asked and I told her. She looked at pictures of him and then at me. "... Nineteen?"

"Twenty."

"No." She said and out her phone away. "Dude, that's like a date. You're twelve and he's like eighteen, come on." She told me.

"One, I'm fifteen, and he's twenty. Two, he's Calum Hood and can get any supermodel. Three, he could get Michael Clifford if he wanted. Four, it wasn't a date. And five, you need to chill." I said and she rolled her eyes.

"I'm just saying, from what you've told me, it sounds like a date. You need to lay low with him." She said and I rolled my eyes.

"He's like an older brother to me, stop it. That's weird." I said and she showed me his recent Instagram post.

"Fun nights with lovely people," the caption read and it was a picture of the moon. I shrugged and looked at her as she turned her phone off, hiding it immediately because teachers walked by.

"That doesn't mean anything, stop over thinking this all." I said and she sighed.

"I tried." She told me. "If you end up crying because of this all, I'm not going to have open arms."

"Yes you will." I said and leaned my head on her shoulder. "You love me." I said and she laughed.

"Sure." She said and laughed as she crossed her legs a bit. "So, there's this guy," she said and I nodded. "His name is Francisco and he had like galaxy hair. He's in three of my classes."

"Get it." I said and she laughed. "Is he the one who always wears band shirts and flannels?" I asked and she nodded as she hit my arm.

"Yes! Yes! Yes! Oh my god!" She said and I laughed. "He looks so good in them and I'm so jealous of how nice his hair is!" She told me and I nodded.

"You guys are... somewhat friends, invite him to your party." I said and she thought about it. "Do it now or be in regret for the rest of your life."

"I'll do it tomorrow, I need an invitation made for him." She said and I nodded. "Think he'll want to go?" She asked me.

"Hell yeah." I said and she smiled and nodded, promising she'd talk to him about it tomorrow.
