Chapter 117

"Why are you going to do work?" Walker moaned, dragging his feet as he walked in circles around the suite.

Idina frowned. "I'm trying to figure it out," she said. She was not sure how he found out. He and Erika were going to the park with security, then meeting them before they went to dinner with the Olsens. "Besides, you're going out of the park."

"You shouldn't work on vacation," he said. "It's exploitation."

She chuckled, sitting down next to Erika, and trying to get him to sit with her. "I'm not being exploited," she replied, "this is something I want to do."

He stopped at looked at her quizzically, face scrunching up in exaggerated emotion. "Why?"

Tapping the empty seat beside her, she said: "I told you both I wanted to find a way I can continue to work because I want to provide for you and it's fun and doing a couple of interviews is a good first step."

Walker sat beside her. "As long as you promise you'll be back when we are."

"Yeah," Erika said, her face stern.

Hugging them both, she promised them they would not know she was gone. "You're going to have the best time today," she promised them. "Aarons got your spending money," she added.

They had already gone over all the rules. No ditching or messing with security. There were meal plans and pre-scheduled rides they could use, but they were not allowed to skip dinners with mom and dad. Family time was mandatory. Most of all, no bugging the Elsa actresses, which she had explained with a harsh eye towards her son. And send mom your pictures. They would get spending money each day, they could save it up or not. Everything was planned and budgeted. It was a bit scary, giving Walker so much autonomy, but between Erika and their escort, she assured herself her kids would be fine.

She would get a wonderful time with the triplets and her husband in the baby areas of the park, as well as back at the hotel, out of the way of prying eyes.

"I'm Idina Menzel," Walker mocked in a high voice. "Let it goooooo!"

"Seriously?" she asked, rolling her eyes.

A chuckle came to form Aaron across the room and Idina shot him a glare as Walker took the encouragement, continuing to mock his mother. He grabbed one of the Elsa plushies that had been left as a gift for them as he teased her by repeating lines from the show.

"I'm so bad I swear all the time boohoo," he continued, making Erika giggle.

"That's enough," she said, taking the plush doll and tossing it.

"That's what mommy's going to be doing," he replied, shrugging. "Just facts."

"Just facts?" Idina retorted, tickling him. "Take it back."

"No!" he wailed, laughing gleefully as he squirmed. "Mom!"

"Mama!" one of the triplets interrupted.

"Looks like someone's jealous," Idina cooed, getting onto the floor, and crawling over to where they were playing.

She had read something about the independent play, and while it was hard not to jump in, it was going well with them.

"Dada!" Soren said, reaching out for his mom. The other two looked over, a seeming threat that if their brother was going to get attention, they needed some, too.

Erika and Walker came down to sit with the babies, and Idina called out to her husband who was in the kitchen with a yogurt bowl.

"All the kids get some kisses," she announced, pulling Walker close quickly before he could scurry away.

He wiped it off his cheek, unamused. "You know as my mom embarrassing yourself on TV is embarrassing me, right?" he huffed.

"Oh my god, Walk," she groaned. "You are twelve, you will live. Everyone at your school has the same problem."

He shrugged. "I don't want you to have another episode on TV," he said quietly, "because everyone sees it if it's on TV."

"Yeah, everyone sees it," Erika agreed in the same manner.

Idina nodded as Aaron came over to sit with them. She drew her whole family close, kissing everyone on the head, even the triplets who were squirming to play again. She wanted everyone close.

"It's not live," she said, trying to comfort them. She had told her team no more lives in the near future. "And Aaron's going to be there."

Her husband nodded in agreement. "Dina's been working hard, everything will go smoothly," he assured them.

"Can we go with you instead?" Walker asked. "We are in Disney for a week, right? So, then we can come with mom today instead."

Aaron and Idina exchanged glances, and looked over to Erika, trying to read the room.

"I don't mind," Erika said, hugging Idina.

"It's going to be very boring," she emphasized. "And you will have to be quiet and on your best behaviour all day. And you will not be able to go back."

"We can do that," Erika said. "I think being with you is more important than going to Disney since it's supposed to be a family vacation."

Idina arched an eyebrow in surprise.

"Can't argue with that logic," Aaron replied.

Headset on, Idina adjusted the mic stand for the fifth time. She looked out of the recording booth. Walker and Erika were sitting on a bench outside. Their faces lit up when they saw her and they waived, Walker, making silly faces. She giggled.

There was a muttering static that came over the headset.

"Testing."

Idina gave the thumbs up. "All good on my end?"

It was.

She waited while they did their opening and sponsors. "And today, our guest is the blazing supernova, Idina Menzel." She laughed, forgetting to say hi. "She needs no introduction, but we've got one anyways, right from her kids." With the announcer's voice gone: "We can edit it out if you don't approve," he said directly to her. "But your husband said it was okay."

"Let's hear it," she said, wondering what they would say.

A small buzzing came over as they switched sound sources.

"Want to introduce yourselves?"

"I'm Walker!" Her son exclaimed. "Erika's here too."

"Hi," she said quietly and Idina clasped her hands, wanting to hold her kids.

"So, we're here today to talk about family, and she brought you two along."

"For emotional support," Erika said. "To make silly faces," Walker said on top of her.

"Yeah, about the same thing," Erika confirmed.

"Mommy like silly faces," Walker said, the deviousness in his voice showing. "So, if you see her, you should make silly faces at her."

"But from across the road," Erika added. "It is funnier that way. Then she will know too instead of random people yelling at her."

They were both giggling. Idina could feel the heat rising in her cheeks.

"Plus, that scares the triplets," Walker added in a serious tone. "And if you make them cry mom will not like you."

Threatening the fans, this was great.

"Alright, one last question: What's the secret scoop on your mom?'

"Like, secret?" Walker asked, getting quiet. "Come a bit closer, she can't hear it."

After a few seconds, he said: "She's the best mom."

"Yeah," Erika said quietly.

"I think we're biased because she's my mom but she's the best mom."

"I've had a lot of moms and Idina is the best mom," Erika confirmed. "My favourite, and the nicest."

~

Isolated in a huge Disney-themed bedroom, Erika stood, staring at herself in the mirror. She straightedge her shoulders, reminding herself to stand up tall. Were all the baby hairs on her head smoothed down? She triple-checked.

She was wearing a light lavender dress in a simar style to the one she had worn Christmas night. Idina had hired a stylist to do her hair in a half-up half-down do with elaborate braids. The stylist had tried and failed to add curls to her free-hanging hair, leaving it in an unsymmetric wave. Idina's necklace hung close to her neck above her collarbone.

She turned her face side to side, admitting the make-up and matching eyeshadow Idina had applied to her face. The rosy lipstick was already coming off as she chewed on her lower lip.

She wanted the Olsen's to think... well, she was not sure.

It has been years since she had last seen them, and the last time she had was at the funeral. Which was her fault.

Digging her nails into her palm, she tried to tell herself it would be okay. She knew these people, they were kind. They wanted her to be happy.

Texting them and meeting them face-to-face were two different beasts. Of course, they had cared about her, but she had never been their daughter. She had only ever thought of them as Elsa's parents.

Elsa...

Erika could see her sister in her face now. If she bobbed her hair, how similar would they look, or had she already forgotten that face?

"Hey."

Erika jumped, spinning around to see Aaron behind her.

"We have to leave soon, don't want to be late," he said nonchalantly. But his hands were in his pickets, indicative of his nerves.

Erika collided with him, not making any effort not to cry. "I don't want to go," she said, shaking.

He did not smell like home. Instead, he smelt like expensive cologne. It was clinical and uncoordinated, but it was her Aaron.

Aaron soothingly hushed her. "Nerves?" he asked, "If not, we can cancel, it's ok, we'll do it." He rubbed her back reassuringly.

"I don't know," she said, biting her lower lip.

"Okay, why don't we sit for a moment and think?"

Timidly, Erika nodded. They took a seat at the foot of the bed and Aaron held his daughter close.

"I like you a lot," she said as she relaxed against him. She held his hand, running her thumb in a circle on his palm, stressed.

"I'm glad, it would be a bit awkward if you didn't like me."

Erika chuckled and hugged him. "Yeah," she agreed. "What if they don't like me anymore?" Erika asked. "Last time, it wasn't nice circumstances."

Aaron listened, rocking back and forth in a soothing manner. "My personal opinion is that they are very excited to see you again, and they're going to be so proud of the young woman you are becoming." He brushed stray tears off her cheek. "You're smart," he said, "and you have come a long way. I am immensely proud to say you are my daughter."

Erika hugged him again. "I'm still worried," she mumbled against his shirt. "I don't know if I want to go."

"Well, do you think you'll regret not seeing them, or seeing them more?" he asked.

"Seeing them," she said, turning away. "If it goes wrong. Everything goes wrong all the time."

"A few things go right, and if we've been on a bad streak statistically, we're in for something good."

"Actually, that's the way statistics works," Erika said. "It is like the gambler's fallacy or whatever it is a percentage each time, not an overall. So, the chances of flipping a coin on the heads fifty times out of a hundred are not fifty-fifty, because it is fifty-fifty each time you flip the coin, so the odds are closer to two percent if I remember it correctly. My teacher explained it better."

"See, smart," Aaron replied with a smirk. "You know my angle is always to try things that scare us, but if you are not ready that's valid and I'll stand with you."

She smiled, feeling a bit better thanks to her father, but the weight of her emotions was still hard to bear.

"It's a lot," she said quietly.

"What you're feeling?" he clarified to her nodding. "Do you want to try and work through it?'

She shook her head and hugged him. Erika figured with Aaron around she would eventually feel better given a moment to calm down. It was already working. Like with the triplets, they always calmed quicker when someone was around to comfort them, and they were both human, so the same law should apply. Closing her eyes, she rested her head on his shoulder.

"Can we sit for a minute?" she asked.

He was so calm, and it was nice to be around.

"Of course," he replied, kissing the top of her head, making Erika smile.

She felt loved beside Aaron. It used to puzzle her, especially with Idina, but she was starting to understand it now. It was feeling calm around Aaron and cozy around Idina and thinking about how cute the triplets were when one of them fell asleep in her arms. She would say she was about ninety-five percent sure what it was to be loved and wondered if the love she felt towards her family made them feel the same way.

"Do you feel like I love you?" she asked aloud.

Aaron stuttered in shock for a moment.

"Like I feel like you love me, do you feel that way? Do you think I am doing it right?"

Aaron nodded, first confirming it to himself as she could not see. "Yes," he said, pulling her closer, "you're doing it right, kid," he assured her. "Makes me feel very lucky." His heart was pounding again, and he bit his tongue in a reminder to stay calm.

"Why lucky?" she asked.

"I don't know," he admitted. "It is a saying, but I do feel lucky. It is not guaranteed, I guessed, between us."

"Then I'm lucky too," she replied, squeezing him. "I'm feeling a bit better now, thank you."

Aaron smiled. "No problem. Ready to go?"

"I guess so, thank you."
