Chapter 14 - Seeing the show
I was ecstatic. I was finally going to see Hamilton, I sat in the 2nd row behind the lotto winners. I was rubbing my hands together in excitement, the lights dimmed and the crow applauded. Leslie walked on first and my heart sped up, I couldn't believe I was finally seeing it. My head was spinning as Anthony, Daveed, Chris, and Oak came in.
"Alexander Hamilton, My name is Alexander Hamilton, there's a million things I haven't done but just you wait, just you wait." Lin came in and the crowd went crazy. This was by far the greatest thing I had ever witnessed. I sat in awe through the next 3 songs, I loved all of these people, and I couldn't imagine seeing this show without having them as a family.
Pippa, Renée and Jazzy slayed literally everybody in The Schulyer Sisters. I mean seriously. Renée shames everybody and makes them hate Jefferson before the second act even happens, Pippa is honestly just the sweetest and cutest Schulyer of them all, and then there's Peggy. I am most definitely Peggy.
I loved Thayne as Samuel Seabury, but when Jonathan walked in using his King George walk, the crowd exploded in laughter, he was so funny, honestly I had no idea how the ensemble was capable of standing behind him for that entire song, honestly, how often do they break character? I couldn't do it.
Chris Jackson slayed Right Hand Man, as George Washington, there's no one else in their cast who could pull that part off, he was just perfect. I was just oozing teenage joy during Helpless, the way Lin looks at Pippa across the stage when he first sees her, the was he kisses her hand, they was he tenderly puts the ring on her finger. I mean, that was all fantastic, the little love between them, but the best part of the number was most definitely Oak, as the flower girl. Renée sang Satisfied perfectly, and the lighting for that number was dim and perfect for the story.
Wait For It was beautifully shocking, Leslie stood in the middle while the ensemble sat around him in chairs, there was no choreography, is was beautifully simple and magical, it enhanced Leslie and his perfect voice. The next four songs flew by and before I knew it, Guns and Ships was beginning.
"I'M TAKING THIS HORSE BY THE REIGNS MAKING REDCOATS REDDER WITH BLOODSTAINS!" Daveed rapped faster than anyone ever had on the great white way, I was blown away, I had no idea this was even possible to witness, he sang the song perfectly and apparently he will never cease to amaze me.
When Yorktown rolled around one song later, I sat up a little more in my seat, I was very excited about this one.
"Immigrents." Daveed said, "We get the job done." Both Lin and Daveed said and then high fived. The crowd applauded and laughed for so long, there was extra time allotted for their applause. The entire number was amazing, I loved it. When Hercules Mulligan leaped out of the crowd of redcoats and began his part, I was blown away yet again that night, they were all so talented.
I sat through the rest of the first act, and it was very astounding. The lights came on for intermission, and I stretched and yawned. A girl sitting in front of me turned around, "You're Abigail, right?"
"Yeah, why do you ask?" I responded.
"You're so lucky! Also, you have such a pretty voice!"
"Thank you so much, that really means a lot."
A guy sitting a couple seats away from her came over, "You also have a really pretty face, I'm Conner, nice to meet you."
"Oh, nice to meet you too, Conner, and thank you." I blushed a little.
"Hey, so are you free after the show?"
"No, actually I have a boyfriend." I said nervously
"And I have a girlfriend, what's your point?"
"Yeah, screw you." I said as the lights dimmed for the 2nd act.
What'd I Miss was next and seeing the horrifying fuchsia suit Jefferson wore, was actually the greatest thing I had experienced. The first Cabinet Battle was astounding, you never knew that you could hate a founder as much as you hated Jefferson.
"Sometimes it makes me wonder why I even bring the thunder."
WHY HE EVEN BRINGS THE THUNDER!" Madison pops in like that girl who follows the mean girl in 90's teen movies.
Take A Break was the cutest little number, for several reasons, one, Pippas maternal beatboxing was on point, the mini-Schulyer reunion was to die for and, of course the way Lin says 'hi' to Angelica, I was however confused because the Hamiltons seemed to have a freakishly tall 9 year old, but that was water under the bridge.
I watched Say No To This through my fingers, it was just so sad, during that number I just hated everything, but Jasmines voice made me want to cry, she was just so talented. The song was really gorgeous and I loved it, but I can't stand it. Room Where It Happens was astounding, Leslie has this amazing quality to his voice that I am at a loss to explain, he just has so much talent and it shocks me.
The second Cabinet Battle was amazing because if you watch Lins face while Jefferson is speaking, it hysterical, I loved it, he looks like he's just waiting until he can smack Jefferson down, both here and in his newspaper, under a pseudonym.
Chris Jackson is capable of slaying twice in one night, because in One Last Time, he straight up blows every other singer out of the water. The number was so sad, yet so hopeful, it was amazing.
Jonathan's song, I Know Him, had me crying due to laughter, this man truly is a gift from God, we are so fortunate to have him.
Hurricane was amazing, the cast surrounded Hamilton slowly lifting their chairs, it only highlighted his amazing, and passionately sung song.
I sat awkwardly through The Reynolds Pamphlet, it broke my heart, I loved Hammie and this number mad me want to kill him. Jefferson made a point to hand a copy of the Reynolds to Phillip, who looked at it, looked at his dad, and then ran away. In all honesty, I wouldn't of made it through the song, if Jonathan hadn't pranced through.
Pippa sang Burn with such passion in her voice, I cried through it, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, she sang so well and with such feeling in her voice, transmitting her devastating pain to the entire audience. My heart broke, along with hers.
I bawled my way through Stay Alive Reprise, I wanted to die, I couldn't talk poor little Phillip dying, I could take it. After he died, Eliza let out a huge scream, which pierced every member of the audiance she layed her head on Phillips body and Alex put his hand on hers, instantly she jerked it away and continued crying. I couldn't handle it. It was too sad.
The Election of 1800 cheered me up, Burrs campaign was fantastic, and I loved it, they used the turntables for the voters and it was genius. Personally, I agree with Hamilton, VOTE FOR JEFFERSON! I made it through Your Obediant Servent, but was not ready to go through The World Was Wide Enough.
The World Was Wide Enough killed me (and Hamilton). It was good, until the interior monologue, Hamilton looked so helpless and lost, he looked like he gave up.
"My love take your time." Eliza walked across the stage and held her hand out to Hamilton, the walked away, "I'll see you on the other side." With that he died, and I died with him. It was so sad. It hurt deep inside, I was numb through Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story.
The cast came out to take their the bows and everyone stood up before they even started, clapping and cheering wasn't enough. I want to tell the world that Hamilton was the peak of musical theatre, I couldn't express how much I loved it.
HI HI! I am SO SORRY, this chapter was up 2 days late I have been crazy busy and this chapter required research. I haven't seen Hamilton because I live near Portland Oregon and I refuse to watch the bootleg. I included what I could, so please correct me if I was wrong, thank you much!
Thanks for reading
