Chapter 4
"First day of music academy!" Stephanie said as I fixed my blue and yellow striped tie and smoothed my skirt. I wasn't looking forward to having to wear a uniform at first, but it actually looked pretty cute on me.
One of the highlights of this school is that my friends were at this school too. Falsettos-obsessed Whizzer, who met Stephanie and squealed louder than a lawn mower. Hopeless romantic Ivy. Lydia. And maybe I'll make some friends who are actually my age.
"Come on, dork. You're gonna be late for school." Stephanie said. I skipped out of my room, which was actually Stephanie's guest room, at least for now, and headed down to the kitchen and grabbed a granola bar. I didn't have time for breakfast now, and I was too excited.
_______
Obviously, I didn't have any classes with any of my friends, but Stephanie told me earlier that was a good thing. I didn't really understand what she meant by that. She doesn't know the slightest about how I was treated back at my old school.
I walked into my first class, which was a typical general music class, like the ones offered at a typical public school. The principal walked me in and whispered something to a teacher, who gave a thumbs up and cleared his throat.
"Okay class, we have a new student joining us today! Her name is Josephine. Josephine, why don't you share a few things about yourself?" the teacher said. Here goes nothing.
"Hey, um, my name's Josephine Harford, but, um, most people call me Josie. I play cello and I'm a bisexual." I said. My sexuality seemed way more important than the fact that the cast of Falsettos was taking me in.
The other tiny fourth graders were staring me in the face. There were about twenty children in the class, nine girls and eleven boys, if I counted correctly.
The teacher said, "Right! Josie, you can go sit next to Cadence over there." He pointed to a girl with shoulder-length black hair who had an empty seat next to her. I nodded and took my seat next to the girl.
Almost immediately, the girl named Cadence smiled at me and waved. She motioned for me to come closer to her.
"Stay away from Amethyst. She's really annoying. She's obsessed with musicals, it's all she talks about." Cadence said.
I knew I had to be friends with this girl. She's a geek, just like me.
"Sir? May I switch my seat?" I asked, raising my hand. The music teacher came over to me and said, "Josie? Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, it's fine." I looked to Amethyst, her dirty blonde hair falling over her shoulder. She was actually...kind of cute. In a nine-year-old crush sort of way.
"I want to be friends with Amethyst." I said. Amethyst lit up and smiled. Cadence groaned and banged her head on the desk dramatically.
_____________
After a whole day of classes, most of them with the girl Amethyst, I learned her entire story. We actually were pretty similar. We were both strings students, with me playing cello and her playing double bass. She loved science, and so did I. She was looking forward to high school so she could dissect a frog, which I found pretty gross, but she found fascinating.
School was over, and I was looking around for Stephanie's car so I could take this cello off of my back and get the heck home. Suddenly, someone tapped me on the shoulder.
"Hey, you!" It was Whizzer, violin in hand. "How was your first day?"
"Fun. I made a friend." I said.
"She's blushing. IVY! LYDIA! Get over here! Josie has a crush!" Whizzer screamed. Ivy and Lydia screamed and ran over.
"Who are they? Tell. Me. Everything!" Lydia screamed. I blushed some more and pulled my friends aside.
"Amethyst Eaton." I said to my friends. "I don't have a 'crush' on her, but she is cute..." I said. Whizzer squealed a little and whispered something to Lydia.
"Jay, you're crushing on my little cousin." Lydia said. "Which is a good thing, at least I know the girl is nice." Under her breath Lydia said, "And questioning her sexuality."
"Okay, good." Whizzer said. A horn honked and Stephanie was waving at me from her car.
"Gotta go. See y'all soon!" I said to my friends as I got in the backseat.
"Hey, Josie! How was school?" Stephanie asked.
"Fun. Made a friend." I said.
"That's good! See, I told you things were looking up! And also, I have some news for you." Stephanie said, pulling over near a supermarket.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"I found out when your sister's funeral is. It's on Saturday, are you up for going?" Stephanie asked.
I took a deep breath and nodded.
If I was going to leave my family, I at least wanted to say goodbye to my sister first.
AN: I had to. I had to make this story just the slightest bit gay. I tried to fight the urge, but I gave in after a while. Hope you enjoyed! Catch ya later!
