Chapter 12
I was going to my first dance class of the year and quickly realized I was the youngest kid in hip hop this year. Along with tap. Great. At least Whizzer and Lydia were also dancers. I looked around and saw an auburn haired girl putting on her pointe shoes, and to be completely honest, she was actually kind of cute.
Auburn Haired Pointe Shoe Girl rolled up her leggings and something drawn on her ankle in marker caught my eye. She had drawn a bi pride flag on her ankle. No wonder she wore leggings in the middle of June. She probably wasn't out.
"I'm bi too!" I squealed, hoping she could hear me. The girl smiled at me and walked over. "You're doing dance this year? You seem awfully young to be in this class. What's your name?"
"My name's Josie. And I've been doing dance since I was three. I'm nine." I said. The girl laughed and said, "I'm Catlynn, but most people call me Cat. I've been dancing for...three years? And I just dropped theater to do hip hop and tap this year, and it's driven my mom absolutely nuts."
"You're a theater kid? Same!" I said. Cat laughed and said, "I also forced my girlfriend to do dance with me this year. She's the dirty blonde girl sulking over there." Cat pointed to a girl rolling her eyes in the corner. "Her name's Red, and she's the biggest lesbian you'll ever meet."
"I BET IVY SULLIVAN IS A BIGGER LESBIAN THAN HER!" Lydia screeched from the corner.
"What...who?" Cat said. I cackled and said, "Ivy is Lydia's girlfriend, a lesbian with two moms." Cat smiled and said, "Are you a ballerina like me?"
"Well...I take ballet, but I wouldn't say I'm any good at it." I said. "And lyrical too. Lyrical is the only reason I even took ballet."
Whizzer came over to us and slid next to Cat. "Hey, you're cute."
"Hey, you're gay, get away from me." Cat said jokingly. Whizzer laughed and said, "Josie, that's Catlynn. One of the best ballerinas this studio has to offer."
"She knows who I am. The question is how she knows who you are. And how she puts up with your chaoticness." Cat said. Whizzer laughed and said, "We're in the same musical. Josie has one heck of a singing voice."
Cat's girlfriend Red came over to us and said, "Oh my God, Cat, what did I tell you about corrupting small children?"
"I'm not that small, Cat's annoyed girlfriend." I said. Red started cackling and said, "I like this kid. What's your name, small redhead child?"
"Josie." I said in between giggles.
"Catlynn!" the dance teacher said. "Why don't you practice your solo?" Cat stood up and started to take off her pointe shoes, stammering "In-in front of everyone?"
"You're gonna be performing this thing in front of a thousand people in a few weeks. It's good practice." Whizzer said. Cat laughed and then Red nudged me. "Hey, Josie, I would suggest you move a few inches, Cat's turns are powerful and she may accidentally kick you in the face if you get too close."
I nodded and sat down next to Red as slow music started playing and Cat shot me a wink from the other side of the room. I smiled in awe as the dance started, Cat was amazingly talented at what she did. It made me want to stick with dance even more, and maybe even quit strings for it.
I wanted to be on her level. I wanted to be like Cat. I wanted to be Cat.
When the dance was over, Cat walked over to me, smiling and out of breath. Before Red or Whizzer could compliment her I stammered out, "That was great...Wow."
"She wouldn't stop blabbering to me about how amazing you are at dancing and how much she wanted to be like you. I think you're a role model to someone, Cat." Red said. I smiled and nodded, and Cat ruffled my hair.
"Thanks, Josie. It means a lot to me. See you next week?"
"Yeah!"
AN: Heathers and Falsettos should not have mixed, but I figured out a way to make it work, and I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. Hope you enjoyed! Catch ya later!
