Babies

After Declan's asthma attack, we kept a close eye on him. It was funny seeing him act so normal after that. He didn't seem to be bothered by our sudden interest in him. Not at all. He seemed to embrace it. If we were watching him, he'd suddenly turn to us and smile.

Elisa kept him close to her, so when she had to leave him alone, she suffered from what I call Mommy Stress Disorder. What usually happens is that the mommy has to leave her child for some reason and suddenly begins to worry. She leaves the babysitter  3 pages of instructions and then calls every ten minutes. I remember one time she had to go to the store and Declan was asleep, so I was left to watch over him. She called me when she was driving to the store. She called as she was looking for what she needed at the store. She called me as she was leaving the store.

Then came the day of the party. There was some party going on that was super important and the wives had to go too.  Everyone was gonna go, except Andy. He and I were going to take care of the babies. How cool. Ruby, Saint Lazslo, and Declan all together in a room.

Elisa was doing her makeup as quickly as possible. Patrick was fixing his fedora and I was fixing Declan's little bit of hair. "Give Andy this list, okay? You know everything about Declan, he likes his 12 pm nap and if he gets fuzzy play Old McDonalds. Here's his bag with everything. Tell Andy that the list is a bunch of Dos and Don'ts for Declan," Elisa said. We were at Andy's house now. I nodded and unbuckled Declan for his car seat. I jumped off the car, grabbed Declan and his bag and waved.

Andy's house was a two story, plain white house. I knocked on the door and Andy opened the door. His beard was growing back and I could hear Elmo inside. "Hey Andy. Brought you another baby," I said, entering the house. In the cozy living room floor was Ruby and Saint. "Oh my God, babies," I said and instantly sat down with them. Ruby looked at me confused and Saint approached Declan, who was still in my hands. "Hello," I said in a small squeaky voice. I let Declan down, thankfully the floor was carpet unlike our house. Ruby crawled towards me and sat down right next to me. She looked at the TV in front of her that was playing Elmo.

"Ah," she said, pointing at the screen. I nodded and replied, "Yes, ah, it's a shoe." She gave me a look of amazement and looked back at the screen. The screen was showing a shoe and she looked at the screen, at her shoe, then back at screen. She pointed at her shoe, looked at me, and said, "Ah," urgently. I nodded again and said, "Ah." She then said something that sounded a little boot.

I turned back at Andy, who was standing behind the couch that was behind us. "If there is a heaven, it is this. It's just a whole bunch of cute babies." He laughed. "Oh yeah, Elisa wanted me to give you a list of instructions, " I searched for it in the bag and took out the list. Andy was holding two other lists.

"Like these?" He asked. I laughed.

"Omfg, really? They left instructions, too?"

"Yep. Pete wanted me to throw out the list and just let Saint do whatever. Joe, on the other hand, gave me the list and insisted on giving me a detailed speech on her food."

"I can't believe this."

I sat on the couch with Andy. We were discussing The Avengers,  since we'd both watched it one time together. I argued that Thor was better, but he argued Iron Man was. Our argument was cut off when Ruby started crying. Andy looked bewildered at the child and pick her up. He bounced her a little as he swayed back and forth. He desperately tried to calm her, but to no avail. He looked at me desperately. I grabbed one of the list and tried to find something useful. Something caught my eye. Nap at 10 am. I looked at the time. 10:46 am. "I think it's time to put her down for her nap. Where are her things?"

Andy pointed to a corner where a three baby bags were neatly placed. I found a pink one and assumed it was Ruby's. Inside was an empty baby bottle and that powdered milk substance. I quickly made a bottle of milk for her and gave it to Andy for him to feed her. Andy went upstairs since the baby boys were making too much noise. They seemed to like each other.

Andy came back down empty handed and said, "She fell alseep. Now, where were we?" Our conversation continued.  After listing pros and cons for each superhero, I went up to check on Ruby. She was still asleep, but she looked so cute sleeping that I couldn't help but take a few pictures. She woke up as I was taking the last picture. She didn't cry. All she did was extend her arms towards me. She said, "Uppy?" I picked her up and carried her downstairs.

Andy had given the boys their toys. All the toys that were in the bag were now on the floor. Declan was holding on to his favorite toy, a small little elephant. His grandma gave it to him on Christmas.  Christmas was a good day for us. We went over to Patrick's mom's house and had dinner with them. That had been four or five months earlier.

I put Ruby down and she walked over (yep, she walked) to a small blanket that I'd never seen before. It was cute with red ribbons and flowers. She held onto the blanket with one hand and sucked her thumb with the other. Declan and her gave each other a look before handing each other their toys. I was shocked. Declan wouldn't let anyone take his toy from him.

Soon after it was feeding time. There was a highchair that we used for Ruby, while I held Saint and Andy held Declan. Andy would switch from feeding Declan to Ruby every spoonful. But everytime he feed one baby, the other one would complain and reach for the spoon that was out of their reach. Saint was a cool baby. He just stayed still and let me feed him without much squirming.

Saint and Declan took a nap. Ruby sat in between Andy and I as I forced him to watch Supernatural with me. "See her, Ruby?" I asked her expecting no response while pointing to the tv. "She's a demon. And her name is also Ruby. Just like you." I ended my sentence by poking her noise which caused her to giggle. Andy rolled his eyes and said something along the lines of Ruby being an evil character and how did that compliment Ruby. "Well, Ruby might be the finest villain there will be. You might just have in your lap the girl who takes down America." Andy took a deep breath. I don't understand young people was more or less what he replied.

After the naps, Andy was looking through the lists. "Hey do we have three car seats for the babies?"

"There's one right there, and I think I saw one upstairs when Ruby was taking a nap. Didn't we leave one that one time we came over?"

"Yeah, I think it's in the closet."

"Why do you ask?"

"It's time for a stroll through the park."

"Yipee."

We grabbed the babies, put on their shoes (which was the hardest thing ever), and loaded them into Andy's car. Joe had left a cd full of baby songs which the babies listened to happily. I mean happily. Like they all gooed and gaaed to it.

When we arrived to the park, Andy took out the cd eagerly. "I never want to hear twinkle little star again."

I laughed and grabbed a stroller. It was had space for one baby. We had another one that had space for two. I grabbed Saint and put him in the singular stroller. Andy took Declan out of his seat while I took Ruby. I placed Ruby in the second seat of the stroller while Andy put Declan in the first one.

I tried to make the babies laugh when Andy put a hand on my shoulder. "Put on these shades. We need to look badass while stolling with the babies." I put them on and nodded as cooly as possible. In other words, I failed miserablely and made a fool of myself.  Anyways, I excitedly took out some shades Declan had as well. They were blue with streaks of what was meant to be fire. I put them on Declan and he instantly took them off and tried putting them on himself. He couldn't. He ended up sucking on the end of the shades.

We got on the walking trail of the park and pushed the storllers along as we had a nice conversation.  They were generally interrupted by a "ah", "da," "mama," or a giggle.

"How's school?" Andy asked innocently.

"Sucks," I replied. "Teachers are idiots and students aren't any better."

"You don't like middle school?"

"Not really. It seems as if this year is cursed really."

"I'm sorry to hear that."

"Yeah. How's life?"

"Magnificent. I was on a Game of Thrones marathon last night. I finished reading that comic book you told me of. Very nice."

"Did you like it?"

"Yeah, but I feel like the Josh death was not really nice."

"What? His death was heroic. He died to save his brother."

"I agree with that. But, he could've saved himself. If he continued fighting, he would've been able to save more people in the future. Instead, he let's himself die. We both know he had the ability to fight off the aliens."

"Yeah, " I said picking up Declan's shades that he dropped. I rubbed them on my shirt and gave them back to him. "But his mom had just died, his dad had turned on him, and his brother was in danger. Would it have been fair for him to continue living if he would be sad? If he fought off the aliens, his brother would have died. So, what's the point of him to continue fighting?"

Andy was going to reply when we heard someone clear their throat behind us. We turned to see a woman. Her whole aura said one thing only : geek. Her star wars shirt caught Andy's attention. Her Game of Thrones bag caught his attention too.

"Excuse me, sorry to butt in, but were you talking about Joshua Green? The comic book series?"

"Yeah," Andy said, not taking her eyes off her. I smiled to myself a little.

"Oh my God, I never thought I'd find someone who'd also read it. See, I'm a huge fan of the series, but it's not that popular so it's rare that I find someone who likes it too."

"Yeah, I know, it's very difficult to do. What's your name?"

"Sydney. Sydney McClane. What's yours?"

"Andy Hurley. That's a beautiful name Sydney," Sydney blushed and her face turned the light shade of red that her hair was.

"Thank you, Andy."

For a moment nothing was said and I was afraid Andy would chicken out and cut the conversation there.

"Hey, I know this is crazy, but there's this comic convention this Saturday and I was wondering if you'd like to go. We could go grab coffee or something after."

Her blue eyes lit up. "Yeah, yeah, sure. Um, what's your number?"

They exchanged numbers and Sydney waved goodbye as she went the other way. I smiled big.

"Andy," I said laughing. "Looks like you got yourself a date."

He blushed.  "Okay,  don't tell anyone about this. I want us to take it slow and see if this could work. She doesn't even know I'm in a band, and I'm not sure how she would take it."

"K," I said happily as the fangirl I am. We walked for a little and then set up a small picnic that I didn't even know he prepared.

Declan and Saint were drinking their bottles quietly but Ruby was crawling around. She forgot all about her bottle. Andy and I ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with apple juice.

"Aren't they just adorable?" I asled Andy, gesturing towards the babies.

"Yeah. And there's so many of them so soon. I remember that it was just a year ago when the only kids were you and Bronx."

I laughed. "Yep."

We ate the sandwiches in silence as we watched the babies finish their bottles and explore the new scenery. They were pretty excited and made everything a big deal. A leaf was on the floor and Ruby picked it up and made a show of turning it over and over and then putting it in her mouth. Andy and I scurried over to her and forced her to spit out the leaf. Declan just sat on the blanket and poked at the grass. Saint, on the other hand, would not stay still. He crawled off the blanket and try to crawl over to the next family. We never let him get that far.

The babies were tired from the park and slept through the car ride and into the night. Declan was the first to wake up and he stretched his arms towards me. I picked him up and carried him for a while until he was fully awake and sitting back on the living room floor. Ruby woke up crying and Andy needed to carry her around to quit her down. Her crying cause Saint to wake up, but he just wanted to watch tv.

I ate dinner with Andy later that night giving him advice for his date.

"Be polite. Girls like polite, but not too polite. Show her you can be a bad boy too."

"Cora, no."

"Also, pay for everything, or she'll see you as cheap."

"I have been on dates before, Cora. I know what to do."

"Ask her about her day, and what she likes and all that. Girls like that."

"I'm just gonna go watch tv with the babies," he said, getting up from his chair.

"Then at the end of the date, if everything goes well-"

"Cora, don't even think about it."

"You lean in and give her a kiss."

He groaned and laid down next to the babies and watched tv. Saint crawled onto his chest and decided that the best seat in the house to watch tv.

I fell asleep  a little later on the couch and woke up when Andy shook my shoulder and said, "Patrick's here."

It was morning and Saint was gone. Ruby was still sleeping and Declan was no where to be seen. "Where are they? Where's Declan?"

"They're in the car. Elisa doesn't want to let go of him." He laughed.

"Alright," I said, standing up. "See you later, alligator. Have fun on your date." I hugged him.

"Oh, quiet." He returned the hug. I walked out of his house feeling different somehow, but I wasn't quite sure how. I didn't dwell on the feeling much because Patrick was already there, waving at me.

I walked over and he gave me a hug. We got in the car and he instantly starting talking about the party and band business. I frowned but I wasn't sure why. I nodded and smiled as he told us that the new album would mean another tour. I felt wrong but said that I hoped everything went well.
