Chapter 4
I had just gotten Starbucks when I spotted someone on the street that looked a little familiar.
It was that girl from the stage door.
I waved at her and she bounded up to me. "Are you the girl who was going into the Music Box with Will Roland?" she said in a very heavy accent. I cringed a little but then stopped, how was this girl supposed to know I'm agender?
"Yeah, that's me, I'm Keira, but you can call me Key if you want." I said. The girl giggled and said, "I'm Avery! I'm an exchange student from India! Are you from around here?"
"Nah, I just got to NYC and I'm still trying to get used to how busy it is here, I'm from a really small village in Tahiti. It's really nice there, it's super sunny and it doesn't get as many tourists as Hawaii and places like that." I said.
"You're lucky you're from a calm place like that. I'm from Delhi, it's all traffic and crowds and stuff like that. And it's hot, almost too hot. At least I'm in a place with actual seasons for a year. I might get to see snow for the first time!" Avery giggled. I smiled and said, "I've never actually seen snow. This is my first time out of the tropics and I haven't heard anyone say 'Aloha' once. Oh, I forgot to mention...I lived in Hawaii too for a bit."
"I've always wanted to go to Hawaii." Avery said, stunned.
"It's...nice. We get rain showers sometimes, nothing too bad. And it's cool to be living in driving distance of an active volcano! It's just...the tourists drive me insane." I said.
"And now we're both in New York City."
"Theatre kid heaven." Avery and I said at the same time. There was a beat of silence before Avery and I both started laughing.
"Hey, do you want my phone number?" Avery asked, pulling out her phone. I grinned and pulled out my own phone, I haven't replaced my phone since I was eleven. Avery and I exchanged numbers and then Will ran up to me.
"Hey, Key, oh? Who are you?" Will said, pointing to Avery. Avery screamed and said, "I'm Avery Singh, huge fan."
"Nice to meet you! I see you've met Keira."
"Yeah, she's really nice. Well, I'll leave you alone for a bit! Talk to you later?"
"Yeah! I'll text you!" I said cheerfully. I turned to Will and said, "Hi?"
"Hey, kid, I need to ask you something." I looked confused and then Will cleared his throat.
"I wanted to know if...you would let me foster you? You could live with me for a little bit, just until you get on your feet?" Will asked.
There was a few seconds of dead silence before I started smiling like an idiot.
"YES!" I yelled, and Will opened his arms for a hug. I ran into them and started laughing.
Maybe running off to New York City would turn out better than I thought.
