Chapter 1

"I'm sick and tired of you." I said.

"Excuse me, young lady?" my grandmother said. Now, I'm agender, but I feel most comfortable with she/her pronouns and the name I was born with. It's the honorifics people use that make me cringe, I prefer gender neutral honorifics. So hearing my grandmother call me "young lady" just got me angrier. And when I'm angry, I practically explode and make decisions I know I'm going to regret later.

"I SAID, I'M SICK AND TIRED OF YOU! You've done nothing for me. Absolutely nothing besides let me into your house for the past five months. First, my parents die, and the next thing I know, I'm being ripped from Tahiti and all I've ever known and being plunked in Honolulu where all I see are tourists. And then you make me go to a Catholic school, when you know I'm super uncomfortable with religious things and I'm pretty sure half of my teachers are homophobic. And then you decide to openly insult the friends I did make at my crappy private school? And laugh at me when I cry? You do realize you lost your only son in that motorcycle accident, right?"

"Keira Tarati-Wang!" my grandmother screamed. All I could do was laugh.

"Are you serious? You think using my full name is going to get me to shut up? Well, if you seriously want me to shut up and stop exploding at you constantly, then you have to pick from one of two options, okay? First, you actually start being nice to me. If you're physically incapable of that, then how about I just get out of your hair? Doesn't that sound nice?" I said.

I stormed off to my room and grabbed a suitcase from my closet, trying my best to lock the door behind me so my grandmother couldn't get in. Truth be told, I've wanted to run away since I went into my grandmother's custody. We've never gotten along, even before my parents died. So being suddenly thrust into her custody was practically my worst nightmare, and it's just gotten that much worse since then.

The question is, where would I run to?

I've saved up about $1,000 from chores and birthday money over a span of two years, and I've been wanting to spend that money on a phone. But my grandmother gave me a phone, which was the one nice thing she's ever done for me. That's enough to get me a flight in economy to...wherever.

I could just go back to Tahiti. That's been my home for the past twelve years. I have aunts, uncles, my other set of grandparents, and my friends there. But on the flip side, I'm probably the most adventurous kid to walk the Earth. I want to go to other states, other countries, and see the sights.

This is the perfect opportunity to live my dream.

I packed up enough clothes to last me about a week, my debit card (which had about $100 from allowance on it), some books, some shoes, and my phone, and got ready to hit the road.

"Hey, Nana." I said, dragging my suitcase behind me with a smirk on my face. My grandmother looked at me in confusion and then the realization hit.

"See you never." I said, turning in my keys and slamming the door behind me.

________

I smiled as I walked through the Honolulu airport, giggling and skipping along, feeling the happiest I've ever felt since my parents died. I'm pretty sure everyone in the airport, locals and tourists alike, were staring at the 4'9" twelve year old kid acting like a 3 year old in an airport with no adult supervision.

But you know what?

I didn't care who was staring at me or why, I was getting out of Hawaii and that's all that mattered. Yes, I know I sound selfish. It's most people's dream to go to Hawaii. But in my situation, getting off the island meant one thing: I was away from my grandmother.

I ran up to the person at the front desk and checked in my suitcase.

"Hello, how can I help you today?" the woman asked. I smiled, handed her my cash, and cleared my throat.

"Give me your cheapest ticket anywhere. Anywhere in the world, I couldn't care less."

And that's how I ended up in an economy seat on a flight heading to New York City.
