Chapter 31

"Daddy..." I whined, tossing around in my hospital bed. I was still in the hospital, and Lauren was the only person that knew I was actually still alive. George just thought Lauren was in denial about the whole thing. And he said the same thing to Reed.

Why did no one believe them? Why did no one believe me?

Suddenly, I heard a song from The Prom blasting from outside the door and Reed burst in, well, she burst in the best she could with that wheelchair.

"Oh my God..." I groaned, rolling my eyes at my girlfriend. "Reed, get your butt out of here."

"Geez, excuse me for coming to surprise you! Anyway, have you gotten in touch with your dad? Or anyone yet?" Reed asked.

"No." I said. Reed checked her phone and said, "I have to go. I love you, Valerie."

Reed left and I sunk back into the pillows. Then something came to my mind.

My biological mom and dad.

Mama. Daddy. My real mama and daddy. I pulled out my phone and looked up my parent's names.

Marisa and Leonardo Rossi.

The first result was a Facebook page. Seems promising. I clicked on it and the first picture was of a young woman in a nice dress, holding a baby with strawberry blonde hair. A man with a beard and mustache had his arms thrown around her.

Me. That was my mother, holding me. And that was my father, right next to her.

I zoomed in on the picture, finding the hint of red in my mother's hair where the sun hit it. So that's where I got my hair color from.

And there was my father. Taller than anyone I've ever seen in my life. Cheesy smile plastered on his face. His brown eyes shared a smile of their own, smiling at me. The now ten year old girl looking at the picture.

And me. Baby Valerie. My eyes weren't even open in the picture, and I felt tears coming to my own eyes.

If nothing happened to my parents, I wouldn't have been thrown in the foster system. I wouldn't have known Penelope. I wouldn't have known George and the others. I probably wouldn't even know Reed.

I would've been a totally different person.

"Mama..." I choked out. I didn't have a mother anymore. I had Stephanie and Lauren, but they were my aunt and sister, respectively. I haven't had a mother since I was two years old.

"Mama..." I said, talking to the picture. "Mama...it's me. It's Valerie. But I'm not your...your daughter anymore. I'm not Daddy's...I'm George Salazar's daughter. I'm Valerie Salazar-Roland."

Scrolling down the page, all the way to the bottom, when my parents met in high school, there was a picture of a poster stating the student council officers for a high school.

You didn't need to know a lick of Italian to find my mom's name on the poster. Or that's what I thought.

President: Marisa Rafferty.

Marisa what?

"I'M RELATED TO PENELOPE?" I screamed to no one in particular. I'm blood related to my god awful foster mother.

"Wait, what?" I heard, and then Stephanie banged through the door. She looked at me with wide eyes and said, "Val, you're alive?"

"Yeah, I'm alive." I snapped. "I have bigger things on my mind. I'm blood related to Penelope Rafferty and no one bothered to tell me."

"Your dad's coming now, Val. He finally believes someone. And how did you find out?" Stephanie asked. I handed her my phone and said, "I don't know a single person with the last name 'Rafferty' besides that woman. And that is not a common last name at all."

"Okay, calm down. We're getting you a DNA test as soon as you get out of here. Maybe it's just a coincidence?" Stephanie asked.

"There is no way that's a coincidence." I said. "That means Luna's my cousin...Oh God..."

"What's going on?" George said, running in and hugging me. I sunk into my dad's arms, I was so happy to see him again.

"I'm related to Penelope. Somehow. I don't know if she's my aunt, or what?" I said.

"How's that for a plot twist?" George asked, his face draining of all color.

"This isn't time for jokes!"

"Okay, come on. The doctors are getting ready to discharge you, let's go." George said.

AN: Great work, me. I feel so proud of how evil I was today. Yayyyy! Hope you enjoyed! Catch ya later!
