Chapter 25
My phone started ringing at 3 in the morning. I woke up and rolled over to grab it. I picked it up and wasn't surprised at the name on the screen.
Reed Adler 🌈❤️
I accepted the call and said, "Reed?" Even though Reed calls me all the time, she's a heavy sleeper, so it was unlikely that she would call at 3 in the morning.
"V-Val..." Reed says with a shaky voice. I immediately snap to attention and said, "Reed...what's wrong?"
"I-is there any way you could come to the h-hospital...I'm scared...Via..." Reed said. I ran out of bed and banged on George's bedroom door.
"Val? What's wrong?" George said, barely able to keep his eyes open. I sighed and said, "Reed's in the hospital...Daddy...I'm scared..."
"What for?" George asked, putting on his glasses and scrambling for his car keys.
"I HAVE NO IDEA BUT SHE'S THE LOVE OF MY LIFE AND I DON'T WANT TO LOSE HER, OKAY?" I yelled, crying.
"Listen, sweet pea, it'll be okay." George said. I sighed and composed myself. I got back on the phone with my girlfriend and said, "Reed, it's me. What's going on? You're worrying me."
"Val...love, um...I had an allergic reaction to something...I don't know what...but I'm in an ambulance calling you and I'm scared..." Reed said. No wonder she sounded like she couldn't breathe.
"Okay, Reed, my dad and I are on our way now. The children's hospital, right?" I asked. Reed let out a soft "Yeah..." and I said, "Okay. We'll be there in 20. I love you, Reed."
"I love you too, Via." Reed said. I hung up and scrambled into George's car, driving off into the darkness.
_______
"Reed?" I asked as I entered my girlfriend's hospital room.
Reed wasn't paying attention. She was sitting upright on her bed, strumming a guitar. The bright hospital lights reflected on her dark purple guitar pick, her mint green guitar bringing out her eyes.
She truly was the most beautiful girl in the world. And she was talented.
It suddenly hit me what she was singing. Dance with You. I cracked a slight smile and looked to George.
"I just want to hold you..." Reed sung, tears lining her dark green eyes.
"...And never let you go." I continued. Reed looked up at me and set her guitar down. "You came." she said. I ran over to Reed at lightning speed, letting go of George's hand.
The next thing I knew, my arms were thrown around my girlfriend's shoulders and I was sobbing into her chocolate brown hair.
"Addie, calm down. I'm fine." Reed said.
"Addie? What, are you cheating on me or something?" I asked, suddenly concerned. Reed laughed and said, "I find it offensive that you're accusing me of cheating on you. Your middle name is Adalasia, right? Addie is a nickname from that." It suddenly made a whole lot more sense.
"But seriously, Reed, why are you in the hospital? Are you okay?" I asked.
"Oh! Okay, so my dads and I ordered Chinese takeout. And just to shake it up a little, I ordered something different then the usual orange chicken. And whatever I ordered had egg in it. Turns out, I am severely allergic to egg." Reed said casually. A little too casually.
"As long as you're alive." I said. George smiled and said, "So, Valerie, is she treating you well?"
"Dad! Yes, she is!" I said, squeezing Reed's hand. It pained me to see a hospital bracelet tied around her wrist, but I ignored it. I have had plenty of those myself.
"You're pretty, Valerie Salazar-Roland. Also, I have a question. What were your bio parents like?" Reed asked, dropping my hand. I pouted and picked Reed's hand back up.
"Well, I barely remember my mom. My aunties told me that she could not stop talking about how excited she was to have a daughter when she was pregnant with me. I was the reason she moved to New York. I heard that when I was born, she was so excited to finally have a kid that she forgot to name me for two days. I remember laughing for two days straight when I heard that. And my dad...he was an amazing cook. I brought some of his recipes from foster home to foster home with me, they're sitting in George's kitchen right now. And my aunties...they moved back to Italy once I was really in the system, about 5 years ago." I said.
"Oh. That's really cool. My bio parents were Russian immigrants. We're both immigrant kids. Adopted immigrant kids with two dads. Except my two dads are married, and yours aren't." Reed said. "Speaking of my dads...JAMES! ALEX! WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU TWO?"
Two men ran in and said, "I assume this is the girl?"
"Hi. I'm Valerie." I said, attempting to shake both of their hands. To my surprise, one of the men hugged me. "I'm so happy that my Reed has found true love." the man said. He let go of me and said, "Sorry kiddo. My name's James. And that's Alex. We're not formal."
"That's my dad, George." I said. George shook James' and Alex's hands and said, "Your daughter makes my Valerie so happy."
"She's a good kid." James said. Reed blushed and rolled her eyes.
"Dad, what did we say about embarrassing me in front of my girlfriend? My mega-talented, amazing girlfriend?" Reed said.
"I'm not talented." I said. I had gotten compliments on my singing before, but was it good enough for George and Will and the others?
"You're trying out for varsity basketball as a sixth grader. That's what I call talented." Reed said. "You have the potential, Valerie. You just need the confidence."
"Maybe you're right. Well, I have to go home and get some sleep." I said. I hugged my girlfriend tight and said, "I love you."
To my surprise, Reed pulled me into her and kissed me.
"WHAT WAS THAT?" George said.
"I just got my first kiss, that's what!" I squealed excitedly. I grabbed George's hand and said, "Bye Reed. I love you."
"Love you too, Valerie."
