"I'm just going to go in and get you a uniform for tomorrow," Liz tells me as she leaves the car.
Today has been quite the busy one. Liz decided to take me to various stores to shop for both clothes and other things for the room. It felt strange considering I haven't been out and about in awhile, and I felt bad getting things since it was her money. However, she insisted that I must.
It wasn't that bad though, since I barely liked anything to begin with. For clothes I only got two pairs of shorts, a grey halter top, and some plain T-shirts. Style isn't really that important to me at this point in my life...
Besides, having a bunch of pretty clothes won't get me anywhere.
My eyes scan the school building out the car window, amazed at how nice it actually is. The school I used to go to was a dump compared to this.
"Just stop it," I hear a familiar voice say. I quickly look in its direction and see Luke picking up his books.
"Why? You need to go cry in the bathroom?" A boy with even longer fringe than Luke teases.
I purse my lips, heavily annoyed by Michael or whoever that boy is. Luke has probably done nothing to provoke him, yet he goes ahead and does this?
"Good bye," Luke mumbles, getting up to leave.
"See you in study hall!" The other boy next to Michael waves, adding 'loser' to the end after getting a glare from his friend.
So that's why Luke was so angry about going to school tomorrow... Those two are in his study hall. Well, now I feel terrible. I'm the reason he's going to be bullied tomorrow...
"Hey Eve," Luke smiles, hopping into the backseat without argument.
I would've expected him to want the passenger seat.
"Was that Michael and Calum?" I ask quietly, watching the pair disappear further into the parking lot.
"O-oh... You saw that?" Luke mumbles. I nod my head, turning around in my seat to look at him.
"I can tell Liz that I don't want to go tomorrow," I offer, Luke immediately shaking his head.
"No... Michael and Calum would think I was staying home to keep away from them. That'd be letting them win," Luke sighs, putting the last of his books into his book bag.
The next day:
Everything about this uniform is hideous.
My fingers continuously pull at the hem of the plaid skirt in an attempt to make it longer. No wonder so many complaints about school uniforms and teachers are made... One wrong move and my underwear could be shown to the world!
I look myself up and down in the mirror, from the shoes to the thigh high socks and then to the awful blazer. To add to it all, I can't even wear my hair down to hide myself. Apparently, one of the dress code rules is that hair must be tied back or in a braid.
My eyebrows furrow, figuring that today is about to be extremely difficult. As much as I want to make my time staying here not difficult for Liz, Luke, or even Jack, I would really love to just stay locked up in this room.
I shake my head back and forth, convincing myself that I'll be fine while putting my hair up into a high pony. Breakfast is probably ready...
With that said, I pick up the bag Liz gave me to put my lunch in and whiteboard as I make my way downstairs to the kitchen.
"Jack I'm gonna let you drive today, but if you go anywhere but school I'm taking your keys again," Liz warns. Yeah, his keys will definitely be gone tonight.
"You kids better eat up or you're gonna be late!" Liz smiles, handing us all our breakfast.
"Doesn't really matter if I'm late cause I don't even have classes," Luke mumbles under his breath, obviously still angered.
"What ever, Luke. Just stop with this attitude, you're starting to sound like your brother,"
"That isn't a bad thing," Jack chuckles while grabbing his keys, "well let's go then,"
I slide off my stool, regretting taking so long to get ready since I barely even got to eat breakfast. However, I think I remember Luke saying that it's only a half day... So it shouldn't be that hard.
"Have fun today, Evelyn!" Liz calls to me. I send her a quick smile as I hop into Jack's car.
"Yeah, my advice to you is to stay as far away from Luke as possible or you'll be dragged into the unpopular crowd," Jack tells me.
"Oh shut up!" Luke sighs, giving his brother a slap on the arm.
"It's the truth," Jack chuckles, driving in the direction of the school.
I shake my head to myself, knowing that either way I won't be popular. No one wants to be friends with a girl who won't talk, which is actually one of my reasons for not talking... Besides, I'd rather have a friend like Luke than a bunch of other friends who don't care.
Light rain drops down the car window as Jack's music fills my ears. "Sweater Weather," blasts through the car, giving me a little respect for Jack's music taste. I mean, I do sort of like this song.
I wish I would have remembered my ear phones... Usually I never leave without them but today I just had so much to worry about. Hopefully it won't be too bad and I can just be Luke's shadow the entire time.
"Can you just drop us off before you find a parking space?" Luke asks his brother once we pull into the school.
"Why? Want to beat the bullies to a seat?" Jack laughs, earning a stern look from Luke.
Jack pulls over anyway, letting Luke and I off at the schools entrance. The rain gently taps our heads on the way inside, luckily not drenching us completely. I wonder if Luke regrets offering to take me here...
"Calum and Michael will probably come up to us," Luke explains, "but if you just ignore them they usually get bored and leave,"
I nod my head, having no problem with having to ignore someone... That's kind of my specialty.
"We can just take this table in the back," Luke points out, leading me into the cafeteria. I look around, furrowing my eyebrows since we are not in a classroom.
"With finals and all my usual room is taken up so we have to come here," he explains, almost like he read my mind.
I silently sit next to him at the circular table, my eyes scanning the somewhat big room. It doesn't surprise me that Luke what come sit all the way in the back corner, but it does surprise me that he doesn't really have friends.
"We aren't aloud to use our phones either," He sighs, already looking completely bored.
"Why not?" I ask quietly.
"Because we are supposed to use this time to do homework or study," He replies, "which is why I always draw,"
I watch as he takes a sketch book out of his back, it's pages mostly filled with lyrics. I mean, I wouldn't exactly call that drawing.
"Huke Lemmings!" I hear a voice call, my eyes looking up to see Luke's two favorite people heading towards us.
"Here we go," Luke says under his breath as Michael and Calum reach our table.
"Who are you?" Calum asks me, but I don't even bother to look up at him.
"Evelyn," Luke answers for me, uncomfortably shifting in his chair.
"What are you doing over here with this kid?" Calum laughs. This time I do decide to look up at him, giving him a questioning look.
"Wanna come over here with us?" Michael asks me, causing me to look right back down at the table. Why do they think they're so powerful.
"Just leave us alone already," Luke grunts.
"Did they assign you to shadow him? I think it'd be a little better if you shadowed us since this kid isn't necessarily appreciated around here," Michael chuckles, my stomach dropping at his comment.
This kid isn't necessarily appreciated around here.
Judging from experience... All lives should be appreciated.
I continue to ignore them, my respect for both Michael and Calum diminishing by the minute. Do they even know how much they affect Luke's life?
"Is she deaf or some shït?" Michael scoffs.
"No she-"
"I know sign language!" Calum cuts Luke off, tapping rudely on the table in front of me.
I watch as he signs the words 'my name is C-A-L-U-M,"
Yes, I do know sign language since for a solid year people thought I was deaf since I'd never answer them. As a result they forced me into signing lessons.
I shrug my shoulders at him, refusing to give him the time of day.
'Come join Michael and I over there," he signs, very slowly might I add.
This time, I smile at him, raising my own hands to sign, 'No thank you. Luke is my friend,'
"She's not deaf you idiots, she just doesn't like to talk," Luke finally speak up.
"Well that's dumb," Michael replies. Not the first time I've heard that.
"She doesn't want to come with us anyways... She says that Luke is her friend," Calum says.
"Not surprising considering she's a bit weird like him. Bet her parents aren't too happy bout that," Michael sighs, my heart dropping to my stomach.
My parents?
Usually things like this don't really get to me, but somehow when Michael says it it does.
With that I take a deep breath in, closing my eyes before getting up and walking out of the cafeteria.
