Chapter 3

Jordan's point of view

"Jordan, Jordan wake up." Someone said and I jumped up. I looked around frantically, feeling sweat drip down the side of my face. "Princess, what's wrong? You were kicking and screaming."

I tried to speak but my throat was dried. I looked around and noticed it was Michael and Calum in my room. "Here." Calum said, handing me a water bottle. I took it from him gratefully and took a drink.

I could feel myself shaking, and I had to wipe my eyes furiously to keep the tears from actually falling. "I-I'm so so sorry," I said, my voice cracking. "I didn't mean to wake you two up. I can't believe I was that loud. Miss always told me I was loud but I didn't think it was enough to wake up people with rooms so far away from mine." I rambled.

"It's fine, don't worry." Calum told me. "We always wake up late at night anyways." He said as he took my water and set it on the dresser beside my bed.

"I feel so bad, oh my god, don't look at me." I said and pulled the blanket over me. They pulled it off but I just kept myself curled up. "I'm so sorry."

"We told you, it's fine." Michael told me, rubbing my back. "Do you want to talk about it? I heard it helps a lot." He told me and I shook my head.

"No, I'm fine." I said. "You can go to sleep now." I told them. "I won't bother you guys anymore." I told them as I sat up. I wasn't going back to sleep. I was going to stay up.

"Are you sure? We can stay up with you if you would like." Calum asked and I shook my head. "Alright then, goodnight Jordan." He said and kissed my forehead.

"Night Calum," I said and he handed me the bottle before he left and went to his room. "You can go to Michael, I don't want to bother you."

"You're not bothering me, I promise." He told me. "But if you want me to leave, I will." He said and kissed my cheek. "Good night and sweet dreams Jordan." He said and I nodded, wishing him the same.

He walked away, but before he could leave the room, I called him. "What do you need?" He asked me and I hesitated before I asked. I played with my fingers and he looked at me expectingly.

"My sister, she always sang me these songs, 'Have F-Faith In Me' by A Day To Remember and 'When We Stand Together' by N-Nickelback whenever I had nights like this." I said and he seemed to understand what I was asking.

"Do you want me to sing those to you?" He asked and I nodded shyly. He walked in and I scooted over so he could sit down on the bed beside me.

"It's a good thing that I know these song, huh?" He asked me and I nodded, laying down beside him. His hand ran through my hair as he hummed, and then he soon started singing.

"Have faith in me," he sang quietly, and I closed my eyes. "Cause there are things that I've seen, I don't believe." He continued, his hand running through my black hair.

I pulled the blanket higher and I cuddled more into the pillows, but I just couldn't sleep. I tried paying attention to just Michael and his singing, but still, no avail.

"I said I'd never let you go, and I never did." He sang and I opened my eyes. "I said I'd never let you fall and I always meant it."

Memories of my sister singing this to me before flashed in my mind and I smiled sadly. She'd do this. She'd sit beside me and run her hands through my hair, her eyes fixed on me in a caring and protective way.

"So we'll pretend it's alright, and stay in for the night." He sang and I felt crazy for imagining my sister's voice as he sang. "I'll keep you safe here with me."

He continued the song, and throughout the whole thing, it didn't help me one bit. My mind was running and my memories faded away.

By the time the song had ended, I was still wide awake. "I'm a terrible singer, especially late at night, but I tried." He told me and I looked up at him.

"Who told you that?" I asked him. "Who told you that you can't sing? You're a great singer, no wonder why you're in a band." I told him.

"People." Was all he said and even in the dark, I could see him smile down at me. "Do you still want me to sing the other one?" He asked and I shrugged.

"Only-Only if you want to." I told him, subconsciously laying my head on his lap. "I don't want you to feel like you have too." I told him and he just hummed, telling me he'll do it.

As he began singing, he also began playing with my hair. That had always been my favorite thing ever, when people played with my hair. I loved the feeling of their fingers running through it or messing with it.

"People pretending everywhere, it's just another day." He sang and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. I could see he was a person who enjoyed physical contact, or was used to it.

"We must stand together, there's no giving in," he sang and I hummed along to the song. "Hand in hand forever, that's when we all win."

My arms wrapped around his waist as I would with my sister, but before I could pull away, his hand was rubbing my exposed arms. I calmed down and grew more relaxed, knowing he didn't mind the sudden action.

"They tell us everything's alright, and we just play along," he sang and I closed my eyes once again. "How can we fall asleep at night, when something's clearly wrong?"

He continued singing and I smiled to myself. I loved his voice and it was such a shame he believed he was a bad singer. You're in a band for a reason. To sing and play an instrument.

When he finished singing, I was still not able to fall asleep. "Michael?" I asked and he hummed. "Can I-Can I go outside? I still can't sleep."

"It's late Jordan, you can't be out there by yourself at this time." He told me and I looked up at him. "Can you just try to sleep?"

"No because this isn't an unusual occurance. When I can't sleep after the songs then I go outside and ride my skateboard around. Of course, I had to sneak out at the adoption center." I said and he sighed.

"Do you think it will help you fall asleep when you come in?" He asked me and I nodded my head. "You can't just stay up the rest of the night, you'll be tired in the morning." He told me.

"Please Michael? I can't just stay in here and be bored. I need to do something. I'm still young, I have a lot of energy and can stay up for long amounts of time." I said and he was silent.

"Fine, you can go outside, but I need to be with you. I don't want anything bad happening to you." He told me and I nodded. "Go throw on a sweater or something, unless, you need to borrow one." He told me.

"I have my own, it's fine." I told him and he nodded. I threw the blacket off of me and got off of the bed aftet Michael. He switched the light in for me and I went to my closet. I grabbed a sweater and then pulled it on. I was still in my ripped jeans, so I guess I didn't have to change.

I pulled on my Vans and then grabbed my skateboard. I walked downstairs quietly, not wanting to wake any of the other boys up. I went to the front door and waited for Michael.

Soon he came down in a sweatshirt and a pair of jeans. He walked over and opened the door for me. "You're crazy to be out at this hour." He told me as I walked out.

"You're crazy for being out here with me," I said and set the board down. "And for allowing me to be out here." I said and he agreed with a chuckle.

I got on the board and then kicked my leg so I could start moving. Michael followed me and then we went up to the large gate. I entered the password that I had learned earlier today and it opened.

"Not to self, never unlock my laptop or social media in front of you. You have a great memory." He told me and I nodded, laughing slightly as the gate closed behind us.

"Don't tell the boys, one day, I'd love to hack their twitters and post some stupid things on there." I said and Michael nodded, pretending to zip his lips.

"Our fans would still think it was them." He said as I held on to his arm so he doesn't have to run and keep up with me. "They post stupid shit already." He told me and I nodded.

"Feel that?" I asked as the wind blew softly, messing my hair up and blowing it in my face. He nodded and I smiled. "The whole reason I ever come out here, besides for the breath taking sky. The calming wind and the chirping of crickets." I told him.

"It's calming. It really is." He told me and I nodded. "And the stars look beautiful, along with the moon. They're so bright." He said looking up.

"My grandmother once told me when I was younger," I spoke up. "Everyone who dies becomes a star. Whether they were good people or bad people, they became a star so they could be remembered. No matter what life they lived, they will be seen as beautiful." I said smiling. "She told me that everyone, regardless of the crime, deserves to be seen for the good they do. Too many people's good deeds get passed up because of a mistake they did."

"Your grandmother seems like a great women then." He told me, looking at me. I nodded while smiling and looking up at the sky. He looked up to, and then he looked down before looking at me.

"She was. She was extremely caring and sweet." I said and then looked down. "It's a shame," I said and looked ahead of us. "It's a shame she had to leave. The world needs people like her. People who care for those they don't know, see the good in people regardless, and think before they speak." I told him.

"I'm sorry for your loss." He told me and I just smiled sadly. "She sounds like a wonderful person." He said.

"Don't be sorry." I told him and wiped my eyes. "The sky gained another beautiful star." I said and he nodded.

"I never told anyone this," Michael said and I looked at him. "But when I was your age, I had a friend just like you. He loved skateboarding and music. He indulged all of his time into it and people called him stupid for it. Called him a freak for listening to bands like Green Day and Aerosmith."

I nodded, listening to the story he was sharing. "He was so thoughtful and so caring. He was the sweetest guy, but he got shit for everything he did because he was different. You want to know what he told me a day before he left?" He asked me.

"How did he leave?" I asked him curiously. Did he move to another school? Another state? Did he die? What happened?

"Let's just say, he was pronounced dead the next day." He told me and I nodded. "But he told me this. He said the next time you see someone like him, to tell them different is good. That no one can define who you are no matter what they tell you or believe themselves. He told me to tell them that there is always people who will hate you, just don't let one of them be yourself."

"Deep." I said and Michael nodded. "He sounds wonderful himself. It must have been hard to hear the news the following day." I said feeling bad.

"It was, but like you said, the sky earned another star." He said and I nodded while yawning. "I think we should head back now. It's late and you seem tired."

"Yeah," I said and agreed. "And Michael, please don't tell the guys what I told you about my grandmother and all." I told him and he nodded.

"As long as you don't tell them about my story." He said and held his pinky-finger out. I hooked our pinky fingers together and then nodded.

"Promise."
