Adoption Day
My morning started the same as always.
Waking up to the sound of my annoying alarm. I let out a long groan and rolled myself out of bed. I got up and grouchily walked over to my closet pulling out an old grey T-shirt a pair of faded blue jeans, and then some boxers. I then left my bedroom without making my bed. Honestly I don't see the point of making a bed when it's just going to get messed up again a few hours later. That's just a waste of time and I'm not about wasting time. Life is short, I don't have time to waste.
I walked downstairs and into my kitchen to make some coffee. I poured it out into an old mug I had since college. I drink my coffee dark roasted, dark, like my sense of humour.
It was a quiet morning, nothing but the sound of the songbirds chirping, and my annoying neighbor's annoying chihuahua. All it does is yap yap yap all day, just like her.
Well anyways, besides that it was really quiet. I mean, I live here all alone in this house. It's a relatively small two bedroom house. One bedroom for me and the other for house guests and visitors. Though, I hardly get any visitors. The only people come here and my sister, my parents..and sometimes by co-workers for whatever reason.
My job isn't that great, but it pays the bills and puts food in my fridge, that's all that matters I guess.
Should I have studied more in community college instead of getting wasted at stupid parties? Psh! Probably! But it's too late for that. I mean I could go back to college but nobody's got time for that.
So yeah, really quiet. No one to talk to, can't really talk to myself because that'd make me a crazy person. Which is ok because I don't really like people. They're all annoying and only spend time with you when they want something. All of your friends either leave you to live their own lives or turn their back on you eventually. So I guess making new friends is another thing I don't see the point to.
I am an independent, 23 year old adult. I need no one. Except my sis, if I want something from her I guess. Like free food and a free ride.
My perfect, comforting silence was ruined by the sound of my phone ringing.
"Goddamn it what!?" Why can't people leave me goddamn be?!
I answered the phone. "What do you want?" I grumbled.
"Woah there! Someone woke up on the wrong side of bed!" That, was Allison. Allison is my 21 year old younger sister. She's always super preppy and cheerful, though I don't know why. What's there to be happy about? She lives in a crummy apartment and works in a small pet shop. So I don't see what's there to be so happy and exited about. She was always the optimistic one. Some would say I tend to see the glass half empty. But I'm more like, 'what glass?' You know what I'm saying?
I rolled my eyes at that comment, even though we're talking on the phone and she can't see me. "Ah ha ha ha ha!" She giggled. "Soooo, how is your morning going so far?"
"Eh, ok I guess. Same as always."
"Same as always you say?" She say in a fake, infomercial type way. I heard the sound of her giggling on the other side of the phone. "Well I know how to make your morning a little bit more interesting. As well as the rest of your mornings..and afternoons and evenings!"
"Okay what are you going on about?"
"Come to the pet shop today David! We're having a special adoption day celebration! There's gonna be snacks, and juice, and adorable pets you can adopt!"
"Did you just call me to advertise your pet store!?"
"No! Nonono! I think this could be good for you! You could use some company! And what better to provide company than a cute, fury, companion?" She gushed. "C'mon! Pleeeease? Have a heart Davey-"
"-Don't call me that."
"These little guys don't have homes. Isn't that sad?"
"Yeah, boo hoo so sad." I said with zero expression.
"Don't be like that! Please, come over, for me? Your wittle baby sister?"
"Ugh! Fiiiine. But only to stop your whining. But if I don't see any pets I like, I'm not adopting them for the sake of adopting."
"Yay! Excellent! I'll see you soon, bye bye David!" She said quickly and hung up her phone.
The pet shop was just down the street, so I'd be there in next to no time at all. Once I finished my coffee I put my cup in the sink and brushed my teeth.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I looked around at all the happy people, dancing to music, eating cupcakes, and adopting their new pets. The other neko's looked so happy with their new owners. I sat by myself in the pen.
Today was adoption day.
It happened once a year.
Every year, the pet shop owners would throw a small party to try to get more people to adopt us.
People are able to adopt us any day as long as we're open. We're not open on Sunday's though. But we never get too much customers, I don't know why.
This year I really hope I get adopted! Every year since I was just a kitten, I always saw everyone else get adopted, everyone but me. I don't know why, what's wrong with me?
I'm already 18 years old, soon I'll be 19. At this rate I won't get adopted at all! And if I don't get adopted ever then they'll have to kick me out of the shelter! And then I'll be all alone on the streets again. That'd be horrible...
I'm getting older, and when I'm old I won't be cute. No one wants a fully grown kitty.
"Buh-bye everyone!" Mika waved. She was a kitty with black fur and green eyes, 15 years old, still very young. She was adopted by a nice blonde lady and her red-haired wife. Everyone waved her goodbye as her new owners carried her away and into their red van. I peered over the pen and watched yet another get taken away.
"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get adopted this year." Allison, a kind dirty blonde lady who works here, gently pet my head. I saw her look over her shoulder and smile. "Hold on cutie! I'll be right back to keep you company.
None of the other kitties talk to me, but that's probably because I never talk to them.
I really hope someone adopts me.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"David! David over here!" I saw my hyper little sister run up to me. She bent over with her hands on her knees catching her breath. She was never much of an athlete. "I'm so glad...you could make it." She heaved. "Ok" she breathed out standing back upright fixing her shirt. "So glad you could make it. There's cupcakes over there." She pointed at a table with plates of frosted cupcakes next to a bowl of what I'm guessing is punch. And over here are all our amazing, cute and amazingly cute pets! So go ahead, look around, and have a great time." I nodded and did just that. I looked around. There were a bunch of people, parents with their kids and couples looking at all the pets. This wasn't an ordinary pet shop like you'd usually see. This one sold these humanoid, animal like people. Ones that were part cat, part dog, part fox ...that was basically it. I don't know how or why but people got really into them. Their like people, except with extra animal features, and very submissive like pets and they act like pets too. It's weird.
But wouldn't it be kinda cruel to keep them all cooped up in a house unable to leave, and treating them like animals, even if that's sort of what they are, it's kinda cruel and sickening. I don't know why my sis is so into them. Probably because their kinda cute and cuddly.
Everyone seemed to be having a good time, and surprisingly the 'pets' seemed to be having a blast too. Maybe they like being adopted and having owners. I can't imagine why though. I grabbed a couple cupcakes and started eating them whiles looking around.
I told my sis if none of them caught my eye, I wouldn't adopt them for the sake of adopting them. And none of them really stand out to me. I think I'll just take these cupcakes and leave. They're giving them away for free so I don't think they'd mind if I took a few dozen to go.
I noticed one of the cat-people staring at me.
"What?" I said, harsher than I intended to. He jumped up a bit and inched away into the corner. "What's their problem?"
"Oh! David! There you are! Are you having a good time?"
"No, not really. But there's food, so I guess it's ok."
She burst into laughter at that. I stared at her both confused and concerned as she continued with her laughing fit, her face bright red with tears running down her eyes.
"Oh! David! You slay me!" She said wiping her tears.
"Are you okay?" I put my hand on her shoulder.
"So." She started catching her breath. "Have you decided on one?"
"No."
"No? Oh...well...oh! How about Petey over here." She said gesturing to the one balled up in the corner watching people walk by.
"Petey?"
"Yeah!"
"Petey??"
"Why are you saying it like that? What's wrong with him? You don't like him?"
"Petey is literally the ugliest name I've ever heard in a long while."
"Don't say that! That's not nice!" She lightly slapped my shoulder.
"What? It's the truth." She just rolled her eyes at me.
"C'mon, just give him a chance." I looked over to him cowering in the corner of the pen. He had big blue watery eyes, he looked scared. Well, I guess he is kinda cute... I looked back at my sister giving me big puppy dog eyes.
"Fine, I'll think about it-" I was cut off when Allison squealed and gave me a big bear hug.
"Yes! Yesyesyes! Excellent! Oh! Let me tell you a bit about him. As I've already said before, his name is Petey. He's very shy and doesn't talk much...or at all. He's a smart one, and he's very very obedient. I'm sure you'll have no problems with him."
I guess I could adopt him, but I don't know for sure. I mean, it's only me living there. I have enough food and he could always have the other room. I looked back at him, he was hugging his knees close to his chest and was looking at me with big blue eyes. Gah! That's cute look on his face! I can feel it melting my icy heart.
"Fine."
"Huh? What was that big bro." Allison raised her brow at me.
"I said fine. I'll adopt him."
"Really?!" She said sounding shocked like I wasn't actually going to agree with it. Even the little guys eyes seemed to widen with surprise. "You will?!" A big smile spread on her face. "Ya hear that Petey?! David here is gonna adopt you." She said giving him a hug. He didn't hug back though. He just blushed and sat there letting her hug him.
She opened the pen and let him out. He slowly stood up and shyly walked towards Allison. "Ok! Great! We can get you the adoption papers, they're just over there by Kathy." She said nodding her head towards her coworker. She had short shoulder length curly black hair and red glasses. She waved over at Allison and Allison waved back.
"He already has all of his shots, he's perfectly healthy, no allergies, he's potty trained, like I said, he's smart." I nodded. She turned to Petey and smiled. "Well Petey, looks like you're finally getting that home you dreamed of." She turned back to me. "We had Petey ever since he was a little kitten. Joyce said that she found him in a box near a trash can, abandoned and all alone. It's so sad." She said with a sad frown. "No one ever adopted him, I don't know why though, he's a sweetie. But now you're gonna adopt him and give him the home he deserves." She said with a bright smile. She pushed the little guy closer to me. Petey stiffened and his face showed fear. He looked at me, and then at Allison. "Go on." She shooed him away with a cheerful grin. He looked back at me and slowly inched towards me. I gave him a small smile to hopefully calm him down. He needs to like me since we're going to be seeing a lot of each other. "Come with me, I'll get you those adoption papers." I followed Allison to the adoption centre. "Kathy." Kathy looked up at her.
"Yes? Oh, is another one getting adopted?" She said with a sweet smile.
"Mhm." Allison nodded.
"Alrighty then! Let's get those papers signed yeah?" She said enthusiastically, she gave me a big stack of papers and told me where to sign. She said today is a special day, and you can't put a price on love and companion ship. But they did put a price on it and that price was $25. I paid them the adoption fee and went into the shop to get him some things. Allison gave me a list of items we should get him.
On the list was a comb and/or hairbrush, a toothbrush, at least one or two toys, and clothes.
The paper also said to make sure feed them properly, make sure they go to bed early yada yada yada. Ya know, stuff that should be obvious, if you don't give a living thing food they die, everyone should know that, you don't need a paper to tell you that. Or at least... I sure hope people don't.
I bought all the things they need in the store, they had a few clothes there, but their clothes look stupid, I'll have to buy him some proper clothes.
I put him in the front seat and drove off to the store to get him proper clothes and toys. For most of the drive he was completely silent. Though I shouldn't be surprised, Allison told me he didn't talk much. I saw him silently looking out the window. I should start a conversation with them.
"Sooo...you like looking out the window?" I don't know.
His ear perked up when he heard the sound of my voice and he turned around. He silently looked at me without answering the question. I looked back at the road.
"Your name's Petey huh?" He nodded.
"D'you come to the shelter with that name or did they give you that name." He shrugged.
"Well that name sucks. Sounds like something out of a stupid children's movie. I'm gonna give you a new name. How about Felix, you like Felix?" Silence.
"No? Isaac?"
Nothing.
"Guess not."
"Hmm, lemme think.... Oh! I know, how about Logan." His ears perked up and his mouth hung open slightly.
"I'll take that as a yes?" I chuckled.
I pulled into the parking lot of the toy store.
"Come on." I opened the car door for him. I helped him out of the car. He stood there quietly and looked around. "Come on!" I took his hand and gently dragged him over to the toy store.
The automatic doors opened and I pushed him into the store. "Let's get you some toys." He just stood there looking around at all the people nervously. Allison did tell me he was shy. "Hey." I took his shoulders. "It's ok. Their not gonna hurt ya, their just minding their own business. Ok?" He frowned and nodded. "You can have any toy you want, any toy in this whole entire store. As long as it's under $50." He turned away from me and started walking off. "Hey! Wait up!" I speed walked to catch up to him. "Hey. Don't walk away from me like that I could've lost you in this place. Hey, are you even listening to me." I saw him starring wide-eyed at purple hippo plushie. Man, it was really cute. "Do you want it?" He looked at me again with his big blue eyes. I checked the price and it was only four dollars. Not bad. "You can have it if you want." He nodded really fast with a big smile. "Ok then." I picked it up off the shelf and gave it to him. He hugged it close to his body. "you can have another one if you like, they're not that expensive." He stared at me for about 20 seconds before going off and looking around again. He picked out another dino plushie and small blue ball. "Is that all you want?" He nodded. "Are you sure? Because I don't know when we'll be coming back here, and I don't want you to get bored or anything." He just shook his head. "Ok then."
I went and paid for the toys at the counter and then we left to go to the clothing store. We ended up going to a store that sold clothes just for Neko's. Didn't know they had that until now. They were like children's clothes but for adult bodies. I didn't know what size Logan was really, but he was very small and short.
I told him to pick out some outfits but he seemed to have some problems deciding. And he kept on acting all nervous and scared-like around other people and the employees who tried to help him.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Oh gosh!
I was panicking!
I've never really been in the outside world before, and it was really scary! All these people I don't know. And things and I don't know what they are. One day I was in the shelter with the other kitties and puppies. Next thing I know I'm with some stranger and I don't know if he likes me. He's really nice and all but he just seems so annoyed with me. Don't get me wrong, this is what I wanted, to have my own home and my own master to take care of me and love me just like I was always told about.
He asked me which shirt I wanted, but there was so much, I couldn't decide. No one ever asked me what I wanted before. Usually the caretakers at the shelter just give me the things I need and I'm not really in any place to complain. I just take what's given to me and be grateful. But no, he's asking me to decide and I don't know! He ended up picking clothes for me, I just nodded when he asked me if I wanted them. I got some blue and some purple shorts. A pink t-shirt with a cat face on it and some onesies and pyjamas.
After that he paid for them and we went back into his car. The drive was silent, just how I liked it. He kept on trying to start conversations with me, but I didn't know how to respond do I just listened to what he had to say.
After what seemed like forever he parked by a house.
"Welp. We're home." He got out of the car and close the door. Then he opened my door and let me out. Once he helped me out of the car he held my shoulder and guided me to the house. I watched as he pulled out his key and cursed under his breath as he fumbled looking through the many keys he had.
"Here we go." He said softly as he found the key and opened the door for me. I walked into the house and looked around. It was really big compared to my living space at the shelter.
"This is where I live. Well, we live. Feel free to look around I guess, make yourself at home. The bath room is down over there past the kitchen and your room is upstairs second door to the right, next to mine." He left into the kitchen and got a can from the fridge, he popped it open and drank from it.
I wonder what it is.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I left him to look around the house while I go do my thing. He can manage that by himself I think. I dropped myself on the couch and turned on the T.V. He just stood there nervously staring at me before looking around and walking off.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I don't mean to be picky. But this isn't how I imagined what being adopted would be like. I thought that when I was adopted I would have this kind and caring master who'd play games with me and take me places and talk to me more. But all he pretty much did was sit on the couch and tell me to go do whatever.
He said to make myself at home right? I went upstairs to find my room. Second door to the right us what he said, right? I ended up looking into multiple doors, which ended up being a bathroom, a closet, and a room that was probably his because it had things already in it. After 5 minutes of searching I found a nearly empty room which I think is mine. I put my plushies on the bed and crawled into bed which was hard because I'm so small. I don't like being small. The bed was very soft and fluffy like a cloud. I sighed and rolled around. It's much softer than the ones at the shelter! I crawled all the way under the blankets and laid down there curled up in a ball.
What if master David gets tired of me and sends me away! I don't want that to happen; I want him to like me.
I felt my eyes start to water when I wonder if he doesn't like me at all.
This is my first real home; I don't want to blow it. After about half an hour later I slowly drifted off into sleep.
