Why I Cosplay Ancient Greece
This is going to be a bit of a story time, I hope you guys enjoy.
It's no secret that I love Ancient Greece, even before I discovered Hetalia. What sparked my interest was the Percy Jackson series which I first discovered during the summer before third grade. My interest in the myths only grew as I got older. Ironically enough, my first name (Alyssa) is Greek. It means "rational". (My spelling for it is basically a variant of the Latin version of "Alice" which is "Alicia". The spelling is from the Alyssum flower, a flower believed to cure madness and rabies. Sorry, I'm a nerd.)
When I got into Hetalia, I was curious if Ancient Greece would have just been the same as Modern Greece. (My first question to my sister was, "Who's Ancient Greece in this?") Happily, this was not the case. As I started to think of how she would have been, I started going through what I knew about her medical advancements, expert sailing, rich culture, military power, philosophy, and amazing inventions. Soon, my version of her would be called Helena.
I've made her out to be a woman who is intelligent and good in battle. Someone who just owns a room when they walk in, she conveys power and authority. A mother who shows kindness to almost every child she meets because of her strong motherly instincts. She enjoys debates, politics, philosophical conversations, art, music, theater, and the sport of combat.
Of course, she is not without her faults. She can be arrogant about her accomplishments and has a hard time letting things go. While she knows when to stand up for herself, there are times when she loses her cool and strays away from intelligent comments and wit. She can turn to openly mocking those she doesn't like, especially if they have done something similar to her. (I have a headcanon that Persia bullied Helena when she was younger. Even calling her "Shepard Girl" when her leaders sent her out to watch sheep while they had a meeting or were discussing other things.)
I've taken a look at Greece's personality, and have also tried to analyze the few times he's talked about his mother. Remember when he showed Japan her ruins?
