~~~PREET's POV~~~
While I combed my hair, Hussain emerged from behind the bathroom's door. He looked up, smiling at me and I mirrored it. It's my doctor's appointment today before our flight so, Hussain insisted to come along.
After wearing white shirt and black jeans, he came and stood behind my dressing stool. As Hussain started applying gel, I was already done fixing my hair. I still sat there, staring at his reflection. He whistled and a soft giggle escaped from my lips. I shook my head and began applying bindi as I had decided to wear traditional today.
Suddenly, Hussain lowered his face and rested his chin on my shoulder. "Yaad aa gaya ki main yahi hoon?" I asked, raising an eyebrow, staring at him through the mirror, and he sighed dramatically. "Haye yaad aane ke liye bhoolna bhi toh zaroori hai."
"Acha?" I asked, teasingly and turned to face him. Hussain took the opportunity and quickly kissed the corner of my lips, "yeah."
I felt myself blushing again but I quickly shifted the focus on him by pulling his cheek. "Oww! How many times do I have to tell you not to?" He winced and I gave him a kissy face. He looks the cutest when he is annoyed.
I turned to the mirror and fixed my earrings before a hand came and ruffled with my hair. "Hussain!" I yelped. No one messes with my hair!
"A kiss for you too!" He laughed and stepped away, knowing very well that I won't be able to run after him.
I sighed and shook my head, laughing. "Then I want it now," I demanded. "What?" He asked, not being able to believe it. Like seriously? Huh.
"I want it now," I repeated sheepishly and turned around to face him directly. "Is that so?" He raised an eyebrow, taking baby steps towards me.
I nodded in response and a smirk made its way on his face. "Don't forget you asked for it," he said in his raspy voice as he cupped my cheeks. I wrapped my arms around his neck. So close that I could see myself in his eyes. However, our moment was ruined by Hussain's irritating ringtone and we pulled away.
I groaned while he chuckled.
"Hi!" Hussain answered the call with much enthusiasm, "Yeah.... Yeah. Now? .. Ok... Yeah bye."
The call ended and Hussain grabbed his blazer. He proceeded towards the door but, I stopped him. "Kahaan jaa rahe ho?"
He stopped and turned around, "important meeting. I'll see you at the airport." With that said he walked out of the door, while I stood there, silently. The worst of all, I couldn't help my stinging eyes from blurring my vision.
Suddenly the door opened again and Hussain reappeared with a smile on his face. He came forward and softly kissed my forehead, "I am sorry I can't make it for the appointment but, Malvika will take you. Hmm?"
"Yeah," I smiled at him despite the fact that I wanted him to come with me for one obvious reason. I wanted to spend this special day with him.
~~~MALVIKA's POV~~~
"Oh ok. No problem, thank-" before I could finish, Atif disconnected the call. I sighed and kept the receiver down.
Hussain's last minute plan of ditching Preet left me to sort out a baby sitter for Manik. I can't take him to the hospital as it's not safe for little kids and Megha, my sister, is out of town. Atif is taking Aisha out so, she can't look after him either and that left me with one option. I just hope that Waqas is free today.
"Hey!" Waqas answered the called and I exhaled a sigh. Phone answer kiya matlab he is not busy right now.
"Busy ho?" I still asked. "Never for you.. You guys," He scoffed rather awkwardly and I smiled. Everyone need a friend like him.
"You think you can look after Manik just for a few hours? I have to take Preet to the hospital and I can't take Manik with me. I could have asked Aisha but, she is busy today. So, please?" I said in one breath and earned a chuckle from him.
"Drop him off on your way. Main ghar Pe hi hoon aaj and relax," he laughed.
He needs to stop laughing.
I sorted and replied, "Thanks and bye." With as much politeness as I could manage.
"Bye," I heard him say before I disconnected the call.
After dropping Manik at Waqas' house, I picked up Preet. She looked super low so, I decided to take her somewhere after the appointment. Her leg and gynaecologist appointments didn't take that long and soon we were out of the hospital.
"Chal," I said and she looked up at me, confused, "tera pati useless hai- tu mere saath date Pe Chal."
"What?" She chuckled and I smirked at her. "Baby you know I love you right? One date is all I am asking for," I asked, going on my knees. No friendship is complete without some gay moments.
"Oye! Keep your hands off my wife you tharki aurat," came a voice and Preet's head snapped in its direction. Her face lit up instantly and I realised the real reason behind her low mood; Hussain.
"Baap banne Wala hai- par rahe ga bacha hi," I chuckled and shook my head.
He came over to us with a bouquet of flowers in one hand and teddy bear in another. While I watched Preet, she stared at Hussain with wide eyes.
"Happy third anniversary!" He whispered and I saw Preet melting, tears of joy evident in her eyes.
'Aww,' I wanted to say badly but, I contained my excitement and let them enjoy their's. It's been exactly three years today since the first time they met. Every year, Preet and Hussain celebrate every occasion between this date and their wedding. First meeting, the day they confessed their love, the day their families agreed, their engagement, their Wedding. Lucky them; celebrated their wedding twice. Gurudwara celebrations followed by nikaah and then four receptions; in Pakistan, india, NZ and America.
"Guys, at least take your romance home," I told them teasingly and Preet blushed.
"Home? What's home?" Hussain raised an eyebrow, wrapping his arm around Preet's waist, "I sacrificed visiting our first gynaecologist appointment to set up some surprises for her. Now stop being a kabab main Haddi." He said the last part while staring at me and then turned to kiss Preet's cheek.
"Whatever," I rolled my eyes and left the love birds there.
This is what kids are supposed to do; bring their parents' close. However, in my case it was completely opposite. It drove me away from the guy whom I loved blindly. In a way falling pregnant opened my eyes too and knocked some senses into me. It also turned my into a very independent and strong woman.
Par kabhi kabhi aisa lagta hai ki koi hona chahiye. Jisse aap apna keh sako- jiske kandhe par sir rakh kar aap ro sako. Aakhir Kab tak koi yun tanhaan Chal sakta hai?
~~~WAQAS' POV~~~
Manik finally slept after turning my apartment upside down. There was water all over the floor, a ripped cushion, torn magazines and ketchup all over the dining table. How aggressive can a two year old turn after loosing in a video game? Gosh, he just couldn't handle the fact that I am a lot better at it.
Oh well.
I dropped myself on the couch and turned on my laptop. The house could be cleaned later on since Malvika won't be coming anytime soon. I would clean it before she arrives so, she wouldn't have know the mess Manik and I created. Plus, I had a very important document to mail today.
Suddenly the knock on my door caught my attention and I lazily dragged myself to the other end of the apartment. "Tum?" I almost yelled when I saw the person I did not want to see right now; Malvika. She would murder me if she saw the kind of mess I was keeping her son in.
"Hussain took Preet so, I came to pick up Manik," she said pushing past me, "and what happened in here?"
Shit!
"Don't tell me Manik did this!" She panicked as she turned to face me and I kept quite. "Oh no. I am so sorry," she apologised and I chuckled.
"Chill man, Usse thora gussa aa gay tha," I said, rubbing the back of my head. "Gussa?"
"Yeah. He lost in the video game," I told her sheepishly and she rolled her eyes. "And he was versing who?" She asked.
"Me. The legend!" I boasted cheekily and she raised an eyebrow at me. "You call yourself a legend after beating a two year old?"
Ouch. That hurt my ego- well, not quite. "Two year old?" I mimicked her, "Afat hai yeh larka!" I added and Malvika shook her head.
"And kahaan hai yeh larka?" She asked. "Sleeping," I told her.
"He never sleeps during the day. Is he feeling ok? I'll go check!"
"Stop worrying. Bache handle karna aata hai Mujhe. He was just tired," I assured her and she rolled her tongue over her lips. That; she needs to stop doing that.
"Then I'll help you clean up," she sighed and I grabbed her arm, forcing her to sit. "Chup chap beth. Safai main kar lunga."
Jab subha maid aayegi tab.
"But-"
"No but's!" I said sternly and she sat down silently. I quickly grabbed us two soda cans and she reluctantly accepted it. As we sat there silently, I noticed she looked quite distracted.
"Hey- what happened?" I asked and she turned to look at me. "Kuch bhi toh Nahi."
I shook my head. Pretending to be Strong with her guards up like always.
"Malvika- tell me?" I insisted and she got up. "You know what, It's getting late- I'll go get Manik."
However I pulled her back on the couch again by pulling her arm, "jab dekho ghar jaane Ki padi hoti hai. Akele wahaan bore Nahi jaati?"
"I am never alone- Manik Hota hai na," she commented and I mentally face palmed myself. "Genius! I meant- don't you feel lonely? Like not having someone around to talk to?"
She rolled her tongue over her bottom lip again. She has no idea how attractive that makes her look.
"That doesn't mean I am alone," Malvika's soft whisper made me look away. I had been shamelessly staring at her.
"Woh baatein joh hum kisi ko bata nahi sakte," she came closer, her face only inches away from mine, "tanhaa toh woh baatein hum mein banati hai."
I blinked at her, confused as she moved away and burst out laughing, "chill Waqas dialogue hai!"
This time I physically face palmed myself. Yes of course, it's a dialogue. But, what I also realised was that she had managed to divert my mind towards the 'dialogue.'
"Malvika I am being-" however before I could finish, we heard Manik- crying. "Mamma!"
Malvika and I rushed to my bedroom and saw Manik sitting in the middle of the bed, drenched with what smelled like...... Ehm. One thing that never happened after coming to India was having my bed getting wet by little kids. I never minded it back home and I didn't mind it this time either.
"I'll get him changed and then change your bedsheets," Malvika shook her head and apologised again. Seriously, how many times is she going to apologise?
"Don't worry about him. I'll give him a shower and you can change the bedsheets," I gave her a genuine smile and led Manik to the washroom. After an hour, everything was cleaned and we were sitting down, eating pizza while Manik was forced to eat his baby food.
"You'd make a good daddy," Malvika complimented out of nowhere. Yes, I take that as a compliment.
"Par pehle dady kehne wale Ki ami toh mile," I sighed dramatically and Manik giggled.
"Ammmmeeeeh," Manik rolled over the carpet and I scooped him up in my arms.
"Don't worry larki main dhoond dungi," Malvika added, playing with Manik's hair and I dig my face in his tummy.
Even he laughed at my helpless state.
