09. Awkward
Super short! But it was either this or nothing so yeah...
I hope you like it (^_^')
~~~ASMAARA's POV~~~
Come on, how bad can this be? Twenty minutes and we are still staring at our cups, silently. So silent that I can even hear his wrist watch ticking. Baat shuru karun bhi toh kahaan Se? Kuch puchoon- par Kya? Kuch kahu?
Chup beth, Asmaara concentrate on your coffee!
"Coffee!" I squealed out of nowhere and instantly pressed my lips together when Shehry looked up. I parted my lips again but, couldn't form the words. Heck, I didn't even remember what I wanted to say.
Shehry stared at me for a couple of seconds before running a hand through his hair. He took a sip from his mug and politely smiles at me, "nice coffee."
That's right! I wanted to ask him if he liked the coffee or not. Genius.
"So," he stretched the word as if debating if he should continue or not, "tum yahaan kaise?"
Am I supposed to tell him the truth? No...
"It's my friend's house," I told him, staring at my mug, "I am just looking after it until she comes back from her trip."
"Right. So-"
"You hungry?" I interrupted before he could ask anything else. "Uhm yeah," he replied meekly.
"Erm.. Good with pancakes?" I asked. "Pancakes it is," he smile and I instantly sprung from my seat.
The only thing I know how to make.
~~~SHEHRY's POV~~~
I frowned to myself as Asmaara walked out of the living room. She looked a little too distracted while talking. Even though she smiled at me, there was still a sense of uneasiness; discomfort.
Am I the reason? I don't know..
I shrugged away the thought and decided to go help her in the kitchen. I am staying at her place so it's not fair to let her do the work for two people.
As I entered the kitchen, I remembered how she jumped an hour ago so, I decided to slowly walk up to her instead. She was holding a bowl with raw eggs in it. "Asmaara," I whispered but she didn't respond.
"Asmaara?" I called her again. She didn't respond.
I moved forward and tapped on her shoulder. "Asmaara?"
Asmaara gasped as she snapped out of her thoughts and looked at me. Her face looked pale. She turned to the pantry immediately and started collecting the other ingredients while I blankly stared at her back. She panics every time I go near her. I am pretty sure that I am making things awkward for her. I think should leave- even if I have to in such weather conditions.
"Shehry can you help please?" Her voice grabbed my attention and I saw her on her toes, trying to reach a box on the top shelf. I instantly stepped forward and snaked my arm along her's to grab the steel box. She smelled like Vanilla and chocolate.
"Thanks," Asmaara smiled and walked around me. Without looking up at me. "Rabia is tall so kahi bhi samaan rakh deti hai," she chuckled and I sensed nervousness. She was trying to hard to keep a conversation going.
I laughed in response and kept the box back to where it belonged after she was done. It didn't take her long to make pancakes and soon we were at the dining table, digging into the yummy pancakes yet, silently.
After eating, Asmaara suggested that I should sleep for a while and even I agreed. I was feeling really tired and was in a desperate need of taking rest so, I headed upstairs to the guest room. However, I decided to call Hussain first so, I punched his number in my cell and sat on the bed.
"Hey!" Preet answered the call. "What's up?" I asked.
"Just tired from packing," she sighed and I heard her giving some instructions to someone. Maybe her maid.
"Oye Hussain is not making you do all his packing right? Do phone usse- Abhi uski class lagata hoon," My brother can seriously be a lazy head sometimes.
I heard Preet laughing before she replied, "he is making breakfast for me." Oh that's cute!
"Preet don't mind but how can you even digest all those burnt rotis?" I asked teasingly and got the exact reaction from her that I was expecting. "Haww! Don't you dare say anything about my hubby!"
I laughed to myself and heard someone chuckling on the other end.
"Uff possessive biwi, Kasme!" I sighed dramatically. "Toh tere liye bhi Le aau?" Came Hussain's voice and my smile faded. Koi bhi le aao par woh uski jagah nahi le sakti- chahe main jitni bhi Koshish kar loon.
"First tell me- where are you?" He asked, breaking me away from my thoughts.
"Oh yeah that's what I called for! The weather was horrible so-"
"What? Don't tell me that you still tried driving to the location, Shehry!" Preet yelled. Women- just won't let you finish first.
"You better be in a hotel right now and not on the road!" Hussain added and I gulped.
"Yeah! That's what I was trying to say!" I quickly said, "I checked in the very first one I saw."
"Good!" They replied in unison and I exhaled a deep sigh. At least I didn't lie completely. I checked in the first house I saw instead of the first hotel.
We talked for a bit and then it was time for their breakfast. I attached the phone to its charger and stretched. I tossed and turned but, couldn't sleep. After a long and lazy debate, I decided to head downstairs to grab the script that I had left by the fire place and saw it in Asmaara's hands instead.
She sat on the couch, all cosy under the blanket, with the script in one hand and coffee in the other. As I neared her, I realised that she was almost done with scene one. While I stood behind her, I couldn't help but ask, "kaisi lagi?"
Asmaara jumped forward, spilling the coffee on the script and herself. "Oh my god! I didn't mean to! I am sorry!" She choked out as she turned to face me. She constantly apologised however; all I noticed was that she had yet again panicked when I was around.
I shook my head. "Asmaara," I called her name but, she refused to listen to me and continued saying sorry. I gave up after a few tries and held her shoulders, forcing her to sit on the couch again.
"Listen!" I said loudly and she stopped instantly, "it's ok, I have more copies. Relax!"
"But still. Mujhe bina pooche Nahi leni chahiye thi," she sighed and I shook my head. "It's ok. Now go get changed," I assured her, looking at her, now drenched in coffee, clothes, and she left.
That was my only copy...
~~~ASMAARA's POV~~~
Damn! First I took it without asking and then I threw coffee all over it. How stupid can I be? But, it's not my fault that it is so interesting. I just hope that its readable even after the coffee stains.
I sighed and went to the study room to get changed.
I ended up giving Shehry my room and now I don't have a room. I can't sleep in the master bedroom because it has everything to do with Rabia and her love life. It would be awkward and gross sleeping there with Shabir bhai and her pics all over the walls, staring right at me. Ab main Aur study room Ka couch. Huh.
I quickly changed and headed downstairs only to find Shehry sitting with his head in his hands. I felt guilty about ruining his script- maybe that's what's troubling him now.
"Hey, I am sorry," I said again, feeling bad, as I sat next to him. He looked up and blinked at me, "no. I am sorry."
What? Why?
"Look, if having me here is uncomfortable for you...." Shehry trailed of and cleared his throat, "I can leave. Seriously."
"Shehry- what? No!" Where is this coming from?
"I know the way you freak out every time. It's awkward for you and I completely understand," he elaborated and I just stared at his extra defined features, closely. I think he has been gymming a lot lately. At least his broad shoulders suggest so.
"Asmaara?" My name being called- caught my attention and I snapped my head away from Shehry. Have I been shamelessly staring at him while he was probably saying something very important?
Shehry cleared his throat. "I'll go get my bags," he said, getting off the couch.
Oh that's right. We were talking about the awkwardness and all that jazz. BUT I don't feel awkward around him at all; I feel safe.
"Shehry please don't! You are not the problem- I am!" I said and pressed my lips together. Yes, I am the problem but, how do I tell him the 'why' part?
"Either way- it's about having me around," he sighed, trying his best to not sound disappointed.
"No. It's not!" In fact it's a lot safer this way.
"I am sorry, it's just that I am always alone in this house so it's kinda creepy. Plus.... there is a .. a... graveyard close by... too so...." I said, sounding as stupid as I could. Unintentionally, of course.
Shehry blinked for a few seconds before his face turned red like he was finding it so hard to control his emotions. "You mean you thought I was a ghost?"
Someone worse!
"Yeah," I lied, rolling my eyes at him and he broke into fits of laughter. Holding his stomach, he dropped on the couch and I kept staring at him. Itna bhi Kya hasna?
"Are you done yet?" I asked sitting next to him and placed my hands in my lap. "Yeah... Yeah... I am sorry," he apologised, still laughing.
"So we are cool now?" He asked eventually and I blinked at him. "Yeah. Why wouldn't we be?"
Silence again.
This awkward silence will surely kill me.
They say that every time there is awkward silence, a gay baby is born. I think Shehry and I will end up turning at least twenty new borns gay by the end of today.
"Amsaara?"
"Hmm?"
"Don't worry. Ghosts don't exist," Shehry commented, mocking me again, and I threw a cushion at him.
"Duh. That's the whole point. They are dead."
And in a way, better than humans!
