Chapter Twenty-Six

It's Monday. Dimitri and I have been hanging out a lot, but every time we get close to having sex again, his phone rings or something else happens.

Dimitri wraps his arms around my waist and presses his face into my neck. We're in his apartment. I smile and lean back into him. His phone buzzes. He sighs and pulls away.

Dimitri and I are going on a double date with Sandra and Lincoln. We're going to dinner and a movie.

"Come on," I say. He sighs and slips his arm around my waist as we take the elevator down and walk through the lobby. "Are we taking your car?" I ask.

"Probably," he says.

We walk outside and my breath catches. Fuck, Lincoln looks good. He's wearing a dark henley and jeans. He has the sleeves pushed up and I see a tattoo around the top of his right forearm. His jaw has light stubble. His eyes lock with mine and I look away.

"Hey," Sandra says.

"Hey," Dimitri says. "Do you want to drive together or separately?"

Sandra frowns. "Together. You're the one that has a car with a private driver."

I look up. "Your car only has three seats in the back," I say.

Dimitri grins. "I guess you'll have to sit on my lap," he says. I giggle.

"Or he could sit in the passenger seat," Lincoln says. Dimitri rolls his eyes.

We get into the car. Dimitri takes the passenger seat and Lincoln sits in the middle of me and Sandra.

Lincoln has really broad shoulders, so his arm is touching mine. He's also sitting with his legs open, so his knee is bumping into my leg. I shake my head. It shouldn't matter. I shouldn't notice.

The drive is mostly Dimitri and Sandra talking. Lincoln doesn't say much. The car turns and he falls into me.

"Sorry," he murmurs.

"You're good," I say.

We pull up in front of the restaurant and get out. The restaurant is fancy, but casual at the same time. We're seated at a table. Somehow, I end up sitting next to Lincoln. Sandra and Dimitri are talking about boring lawyer things.

A server comes by. "Can I get you started with drinks?" she asks.

"An Old Fashioned," Sandra says. The server nods.

"A White Russian," Dimitri says.

The server looks at me. "Uh, a peach iced tea," I say.

Lincoln frowns slightly. "Peach iced tea," he says. The server nods and walks away.

"So, you uh, run your father's business?" I ask Lincoln. He nods. "How's that going?"

He sighs and runs his hands through his dark hair. "It's boring," he says. "I never wanted to take it over."

"What happened?" I ask, even though I know. His father got sick.

"My father died." Oh, shit. I never knew that. Lincoln's eyes search mine.

"I'm sorry," I say. He shrugs.

"It's not a big deal," he tells me. "Son of a bitch drank and smoked for forty years straight."

"That sucks," I say.

Lincoln looks at me. "What about you?" he asks.

"What about me?" I ask.

Lincoln shrugs. "Your parents?"

"Oh," I say, playing with my napkin. "We don't get along. I haven't talked to them in four years."

"How was your Halloween?" he asks. I smile, thinking about Dimitri.

"It was good. You?" I ask.

"Boring," he says.

"Do you know something, Lincoln?" I ask. He frowns slightly. I sigh. "It seems like you're just going through the motions. You know? Not really living."

Lincoln laughs. "You're the first person to say that to me," he says.

"I'm serious," I say. "When was the last time you laughed?"

Lincoln rubs his neck. "I don't really laugh."

"When was the last time you felt passionate about something?" I ask.

"A while ago." He almost smiles. "I used to own a cafe. I loved cooking and baking."

"Why do you say loved?" I ask.

"Life happens," Lincoln says. His face turns more bitter.

The server comes back with our drinks and takes our orders.

Sandra and Dimitri are still deep in conversation. After a few minutes, Sandra waves down the server. "Can we get another round?" she asks. The server nods and walks away.

"Are you guys getting wasted?" I ask, grinning. Sandra grins back.

"Noooooo," she says. "Us? Never."

Dimitri gets up. My phone buzzes after a few minutes: Meet me in the bathroom.

I smile and casually walk to the bathroom. I knock and Dimitri lets me in. He locks the door.

"What's up?" I ask. He grins and starts kissing me. I slip my hands under his shirt and kiss him back. My back hits the door and his hands slide under my blouse. We kiss deeply and then he starts to unbutton my blouse.

I laugh. "Frisky, aren't we?"

His only response is to kiss me harder and move his hand on my ass. I'm about to take off his shirt when someone knocks on the door.

"Go away!" Dimitri yells. I giggle and he starts to take off my blouse. The person continues to knock and he sighs. He pulls away from me and fixes his shirt. "We'll have to continue later," he says. He starts to open the door.

"Wait," I say. I fix his hair and he grins at me. He walks out and shuts the door. I sigh and walk in front of the sink. I fix my blouse and splash water on my face.

"Oh, sorry," someone says. I turn around. It's Lincoln.

"No worries," I say.

"I just thought it was open," he says. "Uh, Dimitri walked out."

"Oh, uh, yeah," I say. Heat rises to my cheeks.

"I'm not judging you," Lincoln says. I nod.

"I should get back," I say. I start to walk past him, but he stops me by touching my waist. My breath catches.

"You, uh," he says. His thumb brushes my lip and he wipes something away.

"Thanks," I say quietly. Lincoln nods, but doesn't move away.

His thumb moves over my lips, which part. I move my hand to his wrist and his pulse is racing.

"You should fix your blouse," he says quietly. "You messed up the buttons."

It's like I'm so far gone when I'm around Lincoln. I'm helpless. "Do you mind fixing them?" I ask quietly. His breathing quickens as he unbuttons the top three. I lean slightly closer to him and inhale his scent. Fuck, it feels good to be close to him.

He slowly buttons my shirt. "I think you're good," he says. But he doesn't move away.
