Chapter Twenty-One
It's been an hour and Dimitri's still working out. I hate that I've been watching him, but there's honestly nothing else for me to do.
"Are you just about done?" I ask. Dimitri drinks some water and wipes sweat off his brow.
"Yeah," he says. "If you want, you can, uh, take a bath."
"That actually sounds nice," I say. I stand up. "Um, drink lots of water."
Dimitri laughs. "Drink lots of water? That's what you say?'
I shrug. "What? I was never much of an exerciser." He laughs and I smile as I walk away.
I walk into one of the bathrooms. This one has a sink and a large tub. I start running the bath and strip down. I add bubbles and sigh as I sink into the water. I just need to clear my head.
Why am I just noticing Dimitri now? I've known him for a month or two and I've never really thought about him like that. And now...now I'm thinking about how hot he looked working out, how well defined his abs and arms are.
I slide under the water hold my breath for a few seconds before coming up. I run my hands over my face and sink down so just my head is above the water, my legs dangling over the edge of the tub.
"Hey, Kincaid-" Dimitri cuts off when he walks into the bathroom. I forgot to lock the door.
"Oh, shit," I say. At least everything is covered by the bubbles.
"I brought you clothes," he says. His eyes are dark and briefly skim over me. I cross my arms over my chest. I can feel heat rise in my cheeks.
"Um...thanks," I say. He nods and walks out of the bathroom. I cover my face with my hands and try not to laugh.
I wash my hair and then drain the tub. I slip on my bra and panties and look at the clothes Dimitri gave me. There's a soft blue t-shirt and grey athletic shorts. I slip on the shirt, it hangs mid-thigh and then slip on the shorts. I tie them as tight as I can, but they keep falling down.
"Hey, Dimitri," I call as I walk out of the bathroom. "Where are you?"
I walk into the kitchen. He's drinking a protein shake. "You want some?" he asks. My nose crinkles.
"I'll pass." I sit down at the table.
"Dominique seems very interesting," Dimitri says. I frown.
"Yeah?" I ask. What is he talking about?
"She texted you while you were in the bathroom." He's smirking. "She said-"
I snatch my phone out of his hands. "You're such a dick. Why were you going through my stuff?"
"Your phone buzzed while I was making my shake," he tells me. His hair is wet. It looks like he showered.
"Whatever. Have you heard anything else about the storm?" I ask. He shrugs. I walk over to the living room and he follows me. We both sit down on the couch and watch the weather report.
Somehow, our relationship shifted into more friendly and less professional. It's weird but natural at the same time. It's good to have him as a friend?
"Do you mind that I'm here?" I ask.
"What do you mean?" he asks, frowning slightly.
"I don't know. We're friends...but you're my lawyer and my boss...and I don't know," I say. Dimitri smiles.
"I'm glad that I got stuck with you," he says. I smile.
I look outside and it's pitch black. Wind is whipping through the air and raindrops are pelting the ground.
Dimitri reaches over me.
"What are you doing?" I ask. He grins, his arm still over me.
"Just grabbing the remote," he says. "The news is boring."
"It's important though," I say. Damn, he smells good. Dimitri grins at me and grabs the remote. He leans back and flips through channels.
"What do you like to watch?" he asks. I shrug.
"I don't watch much TV," I say.
"Do you like horror movies?" he asks.
I shrug. "Not really. I never found them to be scary," I say. Dimitri grins. "You don't have to take that as a challenge."
"You like haunted houses?" Dimitri asks.
"Not really. I decked someone once," I tell Dimitri. Dimitri frowns.
"The whole point of a haunted house is to be scared," he tells me. "You can't just-"
"He grabbed my ass," I say. Dimitri shrugs.
"We're watching Hell House LLC," he says. I shrug.
"Horror movies just aren't scary," I say.
"This one is." Dimitri looks at me.
"Have you seen it?" I ask.
"No. But people have said that it's really scary," he says. I shrug as he puts the movie on.
A few minutes into it, Dimitri slings his arm around the back of the couch and his hand brushes my shoulder. We're sitting a few inches away from each other.
The movie isn't too bad. It's slightly unsettling, but not unbearably scary. It's definitely interesting.
At one point, a guy is talking to the camera and you can see a shadowy figure moving behind him, which he, of course, is unaware of.
"Oh, shit," I hear Dimitri mutter quietly. I smirk and laugh quietly. "Something funny?" he asks.
"It's funny how stupid they are," I say as I look at Dimitri.
"It's a horror movie; they're all bound to be stupid," he says. "This really doesn't scare you?"
I sigh. "It's fiction, you know? It never actually happened." I look down and play with the hem of my t-shirt. "Stuff happens in the real world that's a lot scarier."
Dimitri looks at me, his eyes searching mine. "What happened to you?" he asks softly.
I bite my lip. "Things you don't want to know."
Someone screams on the TV and Dimitri jumps. "Jesus," he mutters.
We go back to watching the movie. There's a fake clown that keeps moving. Dimitri gets up.
"I'm getting something to drink. Do you want anything?" he asks. I shrug.
"I'm good," I say. He walks away. I see him flinch as someone on the TV screams. I look around and then grin.
I pad quietly to the kitchen. But just as I'm about to scare Dimitri, my shorts that are too big, fall down and I trip on them. I fall onto Dimitri and we go tumbling to the ground just as the power goes out.
It's pitch black and I can't see anything. My heart's beating too fast because Dimitri's on top of me; his knee between my legs, his face hovering over mine. He has one hand on my waist and the other is pinning my arms above my head.
I can feel that he's breathing too fast. I should move or say something, but I can't. Not when it feels so good to be close to him. He releases my wrists and I'm sure he's going to pull away, but he doesn't.
He puts his forearm by my head, leaning on it and then I feel his touch on my waist. His breathing increases as his hand lightly skims my waist and my hips and then lower to my bare thighs. I gasp at his touch, which causes my chest to press against his. His breath catches and his hand tightens on my leg.
I can barely make out his eyes in the darkness and maybe that's why I slide my hands to his back. I lightly run my fingers through his hair and press closer to him. I feel his hand brushing the inside of my thigh and I forget to breathe. His touch is light and sweet. I move my leg against his hand and I see his eyes darken.
"Kincaid," he breathes. I can't say anything. His hand moves slowly up my body to cup my cheek, his thumb brushing my lip.
"I..." I can't say anything. It feels so good, so right. My hand brushes his lower back.
"Are okay?' he asks quietly. I smile and nod. I'm more than okay.
As fast as it happened, it's over. Dimitri gets up. He holds out his hand and helps me up.
"I'll grab a flashlight," he says.
I pull up the shorts and run my hands over my face. What the hell am I doing? Dimitri's my lawyer and my boss.
I hear Dimitri walk back. "You have a flashlight?" I ask. I can't see him in the darkness.
"They're all out of batteries," he tells me. "Where are you?"
"Where you left me," I say. I can feel him come closer. His hand touches my ass.
"Sorry," he says quietly. I smile. "Take my hand," he says.
I grab his hand. "I'm sorry I tripped. I was trying to scare you," I say. He laughs softly in front of me.
"What'd you trip on?"
"My shorts fell down." His hand tightens on mine. "Where are we going?"
"I have candles in my bedroom," he tells me. He leads me through the darkness.
"Fuck!" I yell when I stub my toe on a wall. Dimitri sighs and then slips his hand to my waist, so it's easier to guide me.
"You're relatively clumsy," Dimitri says.
"I can't help it," I murmur.
"We're there," he says. His hand releases my waist and I immediately miss it. I stay where I am. I hear him moving around and then he lights a match, followed by several candles. There's dim lighting, leaving the room with a romantic feel. "That's better," Dimitri says, once he's done lighting candles. "Now I can see you."
I grin. "Dimitri," I say seriously. He frowns.
"What?"
"Do you see that shadowy figure?" I ask, pointing to a corner of the room. His eyes widen.
"You're not funny," he says. We both sit down on the bed. "Big storm, huh?" he asks.
"Yeah," I say. I don't know if we should talk about what happened. "So, uh, where do you think Stephanie is?"
"I don't really care," he says. "I don't want to talk about her."
"What do you want to talk about then?" I ask, licking my lips.
Dimitri shrugs. He leans back and his hand brushes my leg. "Sometimes you don't have to talk," he says. I scoot closer to him.
"Is it okay if I lay down?" I ask. He nods. I'm laying down and he's leaning against the headboard next to me.
After a few minutes, he says, "Kincaid?"
"Yeah?" I ask, rolling over to face him.
"I'm glad you tripped."
