Chapter Twenty-Four

I forget to breathe. Dimitri, Sandra, and Lincoln are all saying hi, but I can't say anything.

"Kincaid?" Dimitri says as his hand brushes my waist. I blink.

"Oh, sorry," I say. "How's it going?" I look at Lincoln and Sandra.

"Good. It's nice to you see you again," Sandra says with a warm smile.

"I'm good," Lincoln says, his brown eyes bore into mine.

"You guys know each other?" Dimitri asks. I shrug.

"I bumped into them around the office," I say. For some reason, I don't want to tell him that I saw Lincoln outside of the office.

"So, are you guys together?" Lincoln asks. I look at Dimitri.

"We're friends," he says. "Should we eat?"

We walk to the dining room. Dimitri sits next to me. We start eating. "Damn, I didn't know you could cook like this, Dimitri," Sandra says. I smirk and Dimitri kicks me under the table.

"I'm honestly surprised too," I say, looking at Dimitri.

He smiles."That's so nice."

I feel his hand on my leg and I start choking on my food. Dimitri smiles and keeps eating.

"Are you sure you guys aren't together?" Lincoln asks.

"We're not a couple, Lincoln," I say. He frowns, shaking his head slightly. Lincoln has a look on his face like he's trying to place something.

"You have any interesting cases?" Dimitri asks Sandra. She shrugs.

"Nothing as interesting as the Thorne case. You're a lucky son of a bitch," she says, grinning. "How'd you get that anyways?"

Dimitri shrugs. "I was down at the police station, you know, messing with Detective Wells. And then I saw him being an asshole," Dimitri starts he looks at me. "He was trying to flirt with someone that he was questioning. But the woman completely shot him down."

"Oh, shit. That's right. The defendant is a woman," Sandra says. "Man, if she did all of the stuff that the news said she did, that guy really must have fucked her up."

Dimitri continues to look at me. "Anyways, from that moment I was intrigued," he says. "And then it turned out to be the Thorne case."

Lincoln coughs. "What exactly is the Thorne case?" he asks.

"Have you seen the news?" Dimitri asks. I almost say that Lincoln never watched the news.

"I don't watch it." Lincoln's eyes meet mine. I look down.

"Do you wanna or should I?" Sandra asks. Dimitri shrugs. "This guy, Braxton Thorne, was brutally murdered. He was extremely rich and owned a publishing company, right? Anyways, this woman apparently murdered him."

"Rose & Bone Publishing," I say. Dimitri frowns. "That was the publishing company he owned."

"What's the evidence like?" Sandra asks.

"Not great," he says. They start talking and I push food around, suddenly not very hungry.

I get up and excuse myself. I sigh as I walk to the bathroom. I splash my face with water and look in the mirror. Damn, I need to re-dye my hair.

After I moved to New York, I dyed my hair a dark copper brown color. My dark blonde roots are showing.

I sigh and make a mental note. I walk out of the bathroom and back to the table. Dimitri and Sandra are still talking.

"Fuck," Sandra says. "I can't believe you decked Carter."

"He had it coming," Dimitri says as he shrugs.

She high fives him. "Thanks to you I won the office pool," she says grinning.

"How much did you win?" Dimitri asks.

"A few grand," Sandra says.

"Damn," I say. Sandra grins.

"The entire office is filled with bored lawyers that are paid too much," she tells me. "All Dimitri has to do is hit Detective Wells and I'm fucking rich."

Damn, as much as I want to, I can't hate Sandra. She's charming and outgoing. She's good for Lincoln.

"We should bus plates," Dimitri says. I nod and stand up. Dimitri and I grab plates and walk to the kitchen.

"You're good?" Dimitri asks. I nod.

"Yeah," I say. I smile. "You really took my case because I didn't flirt back with Detective Wells?"

Dimitri shrugs. "Most girls...they wouldn't have reacted the same way you did," he tells me. He steps closer to me and his lips brush my ear. "And I thought you were beautiful."

I smile and he pulls away. 'What are you going to pass off as your dessert?" I ask.

"Tiramisu," he says. He grabs something from the fridge. "You coming?"

"I'm gonna make coffee," I say. He nods and walks back into the dining room.

I smile as I start making coffee. Dimitri thinks I'm beautiful.

"Is there more coffee?" Lincoln says from behind me. I turn around.

"Yeah," I say as I pour a little bit of cream into the coffee, just the way he likes it. I hand it to Lincoln. He takes a drink and frowns.

"How'd you know I like my coffee like this?" Lincoln asks.

"Lucky guess," I say. He sighs.

"I'm losing my mind," Lincoln says. His head is slightly hung. He looks lost. "I swear you're just like her," he murmurs.

My heart breaks. Lincoln's broken and it's my fault. He thinks he's crazy, but he's not. I was the Adelaide he knew. But I'm not her anymore.

"No one's perfect," I say.

He looks up, his brown eyes searching mine. He runs his hands through his dark hair. "Tell me I'm crazy," he says. "Tell me I'm wrong to think that you're her."

"I..." I don't know what to say.

"You're so similar to her," he says. "Your voice, your eyes...I can't get it out of my head. I've been trying to find her ever since she left me."

"I'm truly sorry, Lincoln," I say. "But I'm not her."

He shakes his head and runs his hands over his face. "I'm sorry," he says. "I just need to let her go. I'm happy with Sandra."

"Do you love her?" I ask.

"I think so," he says. "But I never stopped loving Adelaide. And a part of me wonders if I can ever love Sandra the same way."

I step closer to him and place my hand on his shoulder. "If you're in love with two people, you must have fallen out of love with the first person to be able to love the second person."

"That's the thing," Lincoln says. "I never fell out of love with her." He looks at my hand on his shoulder. I pull away and he gently takes my hand into his.

I look up at him helplessly. His thumb skims my wrist. "Why is your heart racing?" he murmurs. His runs his fingers over my palm.

I blink a few times. I need to snap out of it. I pull my hand out of Lincoln's. "You should move on," I say. I grab my coffee and walk back into the dining room. I sit down next to Dimitri. He and Sandra are still talking.

"Hey, Kincaid?" Sandra asks. I look up. "How's Dimitri as a boss?"

I look at Dimitri and smile. "He's good, except he's really messy."

She looks at her watch. "Damn, it's getting late," she says. "Linc, we should go, baby."

"Thanks for having us," Lincoln says, looking at me. Sandra grins and hits Dimitri.

"I know you didn't cook," she says. She wraps her arm around Lincoln's waist.

"Nice to see you guys again," I say. Dimitri and I walk Sandra and Lincoln out. "How long have you been friends with Sandra?" I ask as we start washing dishes.

"We went to law school together," he tells me. "Do you know Lincoln?"

"No," I say. Dimitri frowns and drops what he's washing.

"You guys looked friendly when you were talking," he says. His eyes are both blue and grey. I can't tell what he's feeling.

"What do you mean?" I ask.

"I saw you guys talking in the kitchen," he says. "You were touching his shoulder and then he was touching your hand."

"Oh," I say. "I guess I reminded him of someone that he used to know."

"It looked like you knew him." It's weird to see Dimitri like this. Is he jealous?

"Don't worry about it," I say.

"Are you sure?" His eyes are bright and searching mine.

"Are you jealous?" I ask. "Because we're just friends."

Dimitri backs me up until I hit a cabinet. He puts his hands on my waist and presses his body against mine. His lips are barely a whisper away from mine. "Maybe I don't want to just be friends," he says.

I smirk and stand up on my tip-toes. I bring my lips to his ear. "Maybe I don't want to be your friend," I whisper. I step away from him. "I'll see you tomorrow," I say.
