Chapter 16: Her Smile
Percy's Point of View
I walked alongside Annabeth to investigate what was all the loud clamor going on outside the classroom Silena had interviewed us in. We stopped outside. Annabeth's grew wide as saucers. There was a single paper taped to the wall. The "clamor" we had heard were really cries of excitement and overlapping chatter spreading layers and layers of gossip. Jason walked over to me and narrowed his eyes.
"I'm still mad at you."
"You won't be any more when you stand with her at the arch!" I started singing "Here Comes the bride."
"Note to self. Find new friends."
"That's cool! But you'll never be able to replace your best friend!"
"I'll ignore that. Perce, guess what?"
"What?"
"You're supposed to guess."
"So?" I inquired. "Let's go see this "famous" paper."
"I've already seen it, but you go ahead."
"I will."
I walked to the wall, and I swear my jaw dropped. On the paper said-
You and your peers will have opportunity to go to a special summer camp program! The staff and I have been working on this program and hope you will make the best of it!
Sincerely,
Chiron and the other staff
Who the Hades authorizes a "special" summer camp program, I wondered while Annabeth's eyes were glimmering with excitement.
She tugged on my arm, "Please tell me you're going to sign up!"
I sighed, "I don't know, Wise Girl. You know I'm not one for school stuff."
Annabeth gave me what I would call "puppy" dog eyes, though they kind of resembled an owl's eyes.
I sighed, "Okay, fine."
Jason appeared by us and had witnessed the whole spectacle, "Gods, Percy. You are so whipped."
I shrugged, "Don't know what that means. Don't care."
"Sure you don't."
~Time Skip (A/N: Hey everyone! I think this is going to be the last time skip you're going to see in this fanfiction! I want to try and introduce new periods of time in different methods, other than time skips.)~
Nothing is more worse than having your best friend drag you to your least favorite place on your entire school campus just to get a sign up form for a summer camp. I could be at a cool amusement park during that time instead of being cooped in somewhere I don't want to be.
I know you're probably wondering; if you thought that, then why did you say yes in the first place?
Annabeth has had this sort of— how should I say it? I guess Annabeth has this affect on me. I had never realized it, until I looked back at some of the memories I had with her when we were little. It was almost as if— almost as if I was under her control, but willingly complied. There were a lot of scenarios that I can compare that always involved Annabeth asking me to do something, and me, doing it.
If I had to do anything, anything thing at all that would make her smile, I would do it— because it was worth it. Any action was worth doing if it made Annabeth happy. I love hearing her laugh. I loved seeing the light that shone in her eyes whenever she felt true happiness. Most of all, I loved seeing her smile and knowing that I was the reason for it.
Annabeth's head suddenly jerked up and facial expression showed a mixture of happiness, anger, and relief.
"Annabeth, what's wrong?" I asked, suddenly concerned.
Annabeth gave and audible intake of breath and then, sighed, "This book is giving me a mix of emotions right now. I'm happy that I finished it, but I'm also really mad that it ends in a cliffhanger and the fact that I have to wait six months for the next book in the series to come out!"
Ding!
A notification sound rang, and we both checked our phones.
"It was mine," Annabeth announced as she checked the notification.
The corners of her lips tugged into a small grin as she read it, and she suddenly stood up. "Pipes offered to hang out at that new cafe that just opened on 1st street with the others! I've got to hold! See you later, Seaweed Brain!" she called over her shoulder as she dashed to who knows where.
"Bye, Wise Girl!" I called back even though I knew she couldn't hear me.
Guess I have to go to this cafe, I thought as I straightened my back and began the long and treacherous trek home.

I stared blankly at the problem on the piece of paper. It seemed to be taunting me, daring me to do it, so I could embarrass myself by getting it wrong on front of the entire class.
Evaluate the problem below.
12x +9
What is the answer to the expression if x = 7?
My phone vibrated as I received an incoming call from Annabeth. My finger hovered over the green button that answered the call. I had an internal conflict with myself as I wondered if I should answer it.
Who am I kidding? I didn't hesitate for a second as I answered the call.
"Where are you, Seaweed Brain?" Annabeth's voice was unusually loud as she fought for her voice to be heard over the roaring winds that buffeted her.
"I'm stuck inside the house until I finish my math homework."
My mom's face peeked inside my bedroom doorway, "That's right Perseus Jackson! No sneaking out!"
I sighed into the phone, "See what I mean?"
"Is that Annabeth?" Sally asked.
"Yes, Mom!"
"Hi, Sally!" Annabeth greeted from over the phone. "I was wondering if Percy could come to a cafe with me and his friends! I can help Percy with his homework if you'd like!"
Sally had a smug grin on her face as she answered, "If that's all, of course Percy can come!" She left the room.
"You're a lifesaver!"
"I know. I know."
