Chapter Nine

We arrived at UrbanFest by some minutes after 10 pm. The venue was a park in Victoria Island which was parked full with people —teenagers, adults and children all coming here to have a good time. It was incredible.

"You like?" Dami asks from above as he stands beside me.

I look up at him incredulously. "I love it. How have I never been here before?" I ask in surprise.

"No idea." Dami says with a laugh before taking ahold of my hand, surprising me with the gesture. "C'mon."

We begin heading deeper into the crowds, the environment getting noisier the further we go in.

"Ice cream or food first?" Dami asks, shouting to be heard over the loud chatter and sound of music.

"Is that even a question? Ice cream, of course." I tell him and we both laugh.

"Good choice." Dami says as he begins pulling me towards the Cold Stone stand which was not so crowded.

It didn't make sense to have dessert before actually eating but we didn't care. I was craving all the sweets I could get for some reason.

We began placing our orders at the stand and I got a Chapman, cotton candy and strawberry ice cream with brownies in it. Damilare looked at me in surprise as I was naming the flavors I wanted. "Do those even go?" He asked with a chortle.

"It's ice cream, everything goes." I told him simply with a shrug as I waited for him to place his order which turned out to be a simple coffee and chocolate with caramel topping. It was very simple but it also fit him, his looks especially. The thought came out of my mouth before I even thought twice about it and Damilare's heated stare immediately met mine.

His gaze was intense as he replied, "You could say so." I immediately had an image of me licking this ice cream off his dark chocolate skin flash behind my eyes and I felt my core dampen from it. I had to force myself to look away from him as we were handed our ice cream as I sent a quick prayer above that I hadn't just made things go back to being awkward but that prayer was answered when we began bickering over who was going to pay for our desserts. He ended up slipping the man the money before taking my hand and pulling me away from the stand to my annoyance.

I was over it by the time Dami led us over to a small empty park bench shortly away from the overly populated areas and I was grateful for the silence.

"After this, we can go play a few games before going to eat some food. I'm craving kebab for some reason. Then, by like 11:30 the concert will begin so we have to get to the stage area like 20 minutes before so we can get good views, cause since this isn't really a paid concert, there's no one to arrange people so things can get heated in the back area. I am not tryna be there this year again." Dami informs me, ending with a laugh as he shakes his head, perhaps remembering whatever happened last year.

I nod my head in understanding, stuffing my mouth full of ice cream. My body had barely recovered from the loads of snacks I ate like a crazy person a month ago yet here I was with this fine specimen before me, going at this ice cream like a fat kid would. But for some reason I didn't care. Something about Damilare's presence made me feel very comfortable. Although it gets awkward between us sometimes, I never felt like I had to be anyone but myself when I'm with him and I loved that.

I looked up to him still eating his dessert and with my now empty spoon in my mouth, I find myself watching his movements.

I couldn't quite figure this man out sometimes. Our first meeting popped up in my head and I remember my first impression of him —I had thought he was just another cocky rich boy who got whatever he wanted and had no real personality. Oh, how wrong I was to think such. This man before me didn't look any higher in social class than I did. He didn't act like someone who rubbed elbows with the crème de la crème of Lagos higher society. He looked like a simple man, who enjoyed simple things, and that trait drew me to him all the more.

"What?" Dami asks as he looks up to see me staring at him, my mind seeming miles away.

"Nothing." I say, shaking my head as I turn back to my almost fully melted ice cream before me. As I move to take a spoon full, my plastic utensil collides with another and I look up at Damilare who is grinning at me.

I know this guy is not trying to eat my supposedly complicated ice cream right now, I think to myself. I'm barely even done with that thought when I see him bring up a full spoon of my ice cream -that he used my distraction as an opportunity to steal- up to his full lips, allowing the melting goodness escape into his mouth. I'm both annoyed and turned on at the sight.

I gasp dramatically. "Did you just...?"

He nods, looking like he's on the verge of full on laughing. "And what are you going to do about it?"

"Do you not know to not fuck with a woman's food?" I ask with a tilt of my head.

"Why does yours taste so much better though?" Dami whines as he moves to take another spoon but I slap his hand away making him laugh loudly.

"Better don't try it, sir. I thought it doesn't go?" I tease him.

We end up sharing the ice cream and eventually discarding his when it melts the cup and begins dripping through. After that, we head on over to the games, spending over an hour at car racing games, ping pong, a basketball game, a badly played game of pool and a dancing game. I was having way too much fun by the time we began heading to the concert area.

There, we were able to snag two white plastic chairs from the DJ's assistant near the stage and we collapsed on it, glad to finally be off our feet.

But not for long as soon the concert began and Tems made her entrance to open it with her hit single Try Me that had the crowd chanting along.

So why you wanna try me, yeah, try me?
You out to destroy me, destroy me
You try to challenge me, challenge me
You try to distract me, distract me
If I was the ganja, the ganja, yeah
You bring the lighter, the lighter, yeah
Roll me in rizzla, in rizzla
And set me on fire, on fire

Soon, her set is over and Fireboy hops on the stage performing a song off his newly released chart topping album, Vibration.

By the time Burna Boy makes his entrance after all the opening performances, the crowd is warmed up and ready for him and he begins by singing his hit track, Ye, as the whole crowd chants along to the all too familiar lyrics before he goes on to sing, Anybody.

As soon as the opening instrumental of the song is heard, I'm hyped as this is my jam and I'm immediately singing along, not holding back. I vaguely notice the wide grin on Dami's face as I danced and sang along.

I don charge my energy, me I no get time for no enemy
Tori pe won le tomi

Nothing wey person never see,
Omo nothing wey person never see
Forget, I say fashi

Forty-five minutes seem to go by in a flash and before I know it, after performing On The Low, the concert comes to an end. Burna Boy thanks everyone for coming out to support him before making an exit off the stage. I turn around to face Dami, who had wrapped his arms around my top torso some time during the night leading me to dance on him during the last track performance. I can feel my face slightly sweaty, my face muscles all worked out from all the grinning I've done in one evening, and my eyes shining brightly. He gives me a sharp grin before pulling us to the exit with a small, "c'mon".

However, on our way out, we get stopped by a young couple. The man, a tall dark skinned man with a chubby build is dressed in a vintage shirt and black distressed jeans, engages Damilare in a tight brotherly hug before letting go. Besides him is a short, beautiful, chocolate complexioned woman. She is in a white top with blue jean shorts held by a thick black belt on the waistline.

"I didn't know you'd be here tonight."  The man says stepping back while the lady steps forward and gives Dami air kisses before going back to the guy's side.

"I wanted to bring Ada out. It's her first Fest so I wanted to show her all the cool spots." Damilare says putting his hand on my lower back, his words make the couple's attention turn to me for the first time tonight.

"Hello." I say stretching out my hand to greet them individually. The woman stares at me with pleasant surprise in her eyes, I don't know why.

Meanwhile, the guy seems to be scrutinizing me properly. If he was as close with Damilare as I perceived, he was probably trying to get a read on me to know my intentions with his friend, the thought made me almost chuckle.

"Ada, this is my cousin Lashè, and this is his beautiful fiancé, Vera." Dami says earning a wide smile from the woman named Vera. "Guys, this is Ada, my... friend." He finally says after sending me a brief look .

I just put on a smile as I awkwardly stood there a moment later as Damilare and Lashè began to make conversation about things relating to work. Vera sends me a look over her fiancé's shoulder as a sly grin comes over her face. She tilts her head in the direction of the park bench closest to us.

She begins walking there and I follow suit, touching Damilare's arm on my way over. He glances at me and gives me a quick nod before refocusing on his conversation with Lashè.

"Hello." I say as I settle onto the bench.

"Heyy." Vera drags out. "I love your outfit, it's very chic."

The compliment makes me smile as I inconspicuously run my hand down my t-shirt. "Thank you." I say.

"So, what do you do?" She asks, interest obvious in her eyes.

"Uh, I work at St. Ives Enterprises. You?"

"I have a business selling human hair, weaves, extensions, that type of stuff." Vera explains.

"No wonder you weave is sitting right." I hype making her laugh. "Gonna have to patronize you cause I'm tryna look that good."

"Girl, I will hook you up, no worries." Vera says with a stubby smile as she touches her weave. "Let's exchange numbers so maybe we can hang out some time." Vera says pulling out her phone. I do the same and we exchange phones, inputting our numbers into each other's device. After I hand hers back to her, I see Dami and Lashè approaching us in my peripheral.

"Hate to break this up, but we've got to start heading back. That Lekki traffic is no joke." Dami says, his hands in his pockets as he comes to stand by my side.

I nod, getting on my feet. "It was nice meeting you guys." I say as I adjust my purse on my shoulder.

Vera moves in to give me a hug which surprises me momentarily. "I'll call you." She says.

I grin widely at her and soon we are on our way. As he said, the traffic heading to my place is no joke and we spend a good hour before finally pulling into my estate. It was, however, an hour well spent as we made jokes and had a really horrible car karaoke session. As we arrived at my place I laughed at something Dami said, some part of me not wanting our night to come to an end just yet.

"Thanks for tonight. I had a lot of fun with your old ass self." I said as he turns off the ignition with a shake of his head and a small laugh. I had been teasing him about being old since he told me that he was approaching 30 although he didn't really look it if I was being honest.

"I had fun too, and I'm glad you did. You seemed like your mind was preoccupied when you came out earlier, everything okay?" He asks, a look of concern coming to his face.

The conversation I had with Richard before leaving home and my moment of conflict immediately comes back to my mind at the reminder and I have to force a smile. "I'm fine. Just some personal stuff that came up."

"Hm." Damilare hums with a nod. "Okay then."

I pause my lips before moving to open the door. "Thanks again for tonight, bye."

As I try to open the door I realize that it's locked so my eyes immediately shift to him, my eye brows raised in question.

"That's my goodnight?" Damilare asks with a silly pout that makes me chuckle.

I move towards him with the intention to hug him and kiss his cheek, but as I approach his face, he turns his head on purpose making our lips brush again each other briefly. I pull back an inch and stare into his eyes conflicted, before I begin to overthink it, some part of my head just says fuck it and I move closer once more, this time, my focus on lips.

For a man that's made up of all hard muscles, his lips are deceptively tender and soft against mine. The kiss starts out slow, before something seems to snap in him and soon he's ravaging my lips, his hand coming up to caress the side of my head firmly as he thrust his tongue into my mouth.

All too soon it comes to an end and we slowly pull away from each other. I stare into his eyes for a moment before I have to practically force myself out of the car with a small "Goodnight" which he replies to.

I bite my lips to stop myself from grinning like a damn fool in my driveway as I make my way into the house noticing the lights on which indicates that Diana is home.

I'm on cloud 9, or so it would seem, as I walk into the living room closing the door shut behind me before locking it.

I turn around with a grin which is quickly wiped off from my face as I notice a livid looking Diana seated on the couch opposite me, her stare hard.
