chapter six

Agbarakwe sat on a stood in the shrine. It was late in the afternoon and dark clouds hung in the sky, the weather was cool and it seemed it was about to rain. However, he knew this was more than rain, this was an omen, the gods were finally speaking.

Agbarakwe was known far and wide as a great medicine man, no problem was brought to him that the gods could not solve, but the one thing he had been asking the gods for for a long time, they provided no answer. They had been silent for far too long but now as he looked at the skies he knew something was coming, finally their prayers were answered, help was on the way.

Smiling he picked the cup of wine beside him and began pouring liberations to the gods, he thanked them for the omen and asked them to bring the answer that all was expecting speedily. Once the cup was empty he rose to his feet and made to leave the shrine, outside the voice of a friend caught his attention causing him to stop in his tracks.

"Great one, messenger of the gods, where are you? The voice called again. Agbarakwe moved to his hut, standing beside the round structure beautifully decorated with white pictures made from Uli, it's roofs of dried brown palm fronds, beside it  stood  the owner of the voice.

A young man stood proud and tall, his skin shone in the late afternoon light, his powerful arms folded across his bare chest. He had a full beard and bushy eyebrows, around his waist was his sheathed sword. His clothes reeked of affluence, on his wrist were two bracelets made of coral red beads, a symbol of his position.

"Your highness, you are here, we are done with our lessons for the day. "Agbarakwe said taking a seat on the long bench in front of his hut. He patted beside him, a gesture for the young man to join him. "You look troubled, tell me what troubles you?"

The young man took a seat and linked his fingers together. For sometime no one spoke, it seemed the man was trying to gather his thoughts. "Our people say the toad does not run in the daytime for nothing except something greater that it is chasing it."
Agbarakwe nodded in agreement.

"I was at home talking to my mother when i saw the clouds rolling in, i knew it was a sign so i came as fast as i could. Have the gods spoken? Is something coming?"

For a while Agbarakwe was silent, he looked to the skies, his hands rubbing his knees through the material of the red cloth tied around his waist. "Hmm, Okenna, you have always been very observant." He adjusted the wrapper around his waist. "You have spoken like a true king, it is an omen, Okenna something is coming, i do not know what it is but i can feel it. The gods are not speaking clearly but i know it is but a matter of time. Time our people say reveals all."

Okenna looked towards the skies again, the weight in his stomach was not moving, it got even heavier, the atmosphere around Agbarakwe only served to make this feeling of dread worse. Whatever was coming Ede was not ready for it, he could feel it, no one was ready for the it.
