// Shane Dawson's Jake Paul series //
I've always been a reallyyyyy big fan of Shane Dawson, he's one of my favorite YouTubers of all time and I love all of his uploads/series soooo much. They're all so genuine and pure and I could talk for ages about how much I love him.
But this Jake Paul series kinda gives me an iffy feeling. (My opinions are based on the first five parts).
In case you don't know about it, it's a documentary-thingy about why Jake Paul is the way he is.
First of all, theorizing someone you don't even actually know in real life has a certain mental illness sounds like a very bad idea. Sure, you could spend a few days with them and get to know them. But still, that's not enough for a diagnosis.
Anywho, I did go into it with an open-mind and boyyy was I
disappointed.
The therapist was so unprofessional. The way she talked about sociopathy was disgusting. How can you describe a mental illness as "gross and icky"?
She also added that sociopaths are hopeless, can't use help and are undeserving of therapy.
There's already so much stigma around mental illnesses and talking about one like that, especially when you're a therapist is so messed up. I wonder how many people who are actually sociopaths watched it and now think they're doomed to be evil murderous monsters or some shit.
So many people, including Youtubers, who've actually been diagnosed with Sociopathy talked about how harmful the video was. Here's one I found in the comment section of a review:
Demonization and dramatization of mental illnesses is never okay and it really pisses me off that people consider this debatable.
Also, the apology they released was some next level bullshit. The therapist dismissed valid criticism as "hate".
And she herself admitted in part 5 that she doesn't specialize in ASPD/sociopathy, she's a fucking marriage counselor! Honestly, I thought people were making it up until she said it herself.
Besides all of this, the series is really looking like a Jake Paul redemption arc which is why I won't be watching the other parts. I also feel like it's kinda dragged out.
Having a tough childhood and family does not excuse you putting people through bullshit.
Conclusion: Jake Paul is an emotionally manipulative, entitled, abusive asshole and there are other people far more deserving of a platform than him.
