Chapter 1 ~ Home
Pearson Airport (Toronto, Canada)
April 12, 2015 ~ 8:20 a.m
"Flight 184 to Seoul, South Korea is now boarding."
The voice of the announcer echoed through the busy airport as the next flight is called. Those already lined up in front of the boarding terminal start to walk though the door. Out of those many people is a 22 year old woman walking with a plain black suitcase and a brown backpack on top of it being pulled by one hand and a small book in the other. Her brown eyes scan through the pages of the book while her lips softly whisper words from it. If one were to look closely at the title the words 'Korean for Beginners' were bold, standing out from everything else on the front cover. She was small, barely over five feet, wearing rectangle shaped glasses. Black bangs framing her face while the rest was up in a ponytail. A simple peach tank top with faded jean shorts was all she wore no accessories except for a small charm bracelet on her right wrist.
As the 22 year old was about to walk through the terminal one of the attendants stop her causing the woman to jump slightly from the sudden action.
"I'm sorry miss but you're only allowed one carry on aboard the plane. Your suitcase must be sent over to the luggage terminal," the attendant says before going back to scanning other passengers' plane tickets.
The woman let's out a out a groan in frustration, "You could have told me that sooner," she mumbles while walking out of line and towards the luggage terminal, taking the brown backpack off the suitcase putting it on her back. While on her way to drop off the suitcase the woman's phone starts to ring. Pulling out her phone from the back pocket of her shorts she answers.
"Hello?"
"Sweetie have you gotten on the plane yet?" the voice on the other end questions.
"No mom haven't yet but they did call my plane for boarding."
"Well then how come you haven't gotten on yet? Did something go wrong? Did you lose your ticket? Ya! Park Heymin is swear if you lost it-"
"Relax mom I have everything with me I just need to put my suitcase into the luggage terminal," the woman says cutting her mother off.
"Okay okay. I just can't help being worried my baby is finally going to live in her birth country," her mother says softly sniffling slightly.
"Mom don't cry! I'm going to be fine I am 22 after all now,I'm already an adult," Hyemin says with a small smile on her face. She finally reaches the luggage terminal and puts her black suitcase on the conveyor belt right next on a similar looking black suitcase.
"You're still a baby to me I mean I remember yesterday you burnt your hand while cooking and couldn't stop from tearing up."
Before Hyemin could reply to her mother the last announcement for the Seoul plane was heard. Quickly saying goodbye to her mother Hyemin rushes back to the boarding terminal before the plane takes off. Right before she enters the terminal she sees a group of about seven men running towards her direction.
They must be trying to catch this plane as well. Hyemin thought to herself as she entered.
Finally entering the plane Hyemin sees that the only vacant seats were at the very back of the plane; three on the right side, three in the middle and two on the left. Deciding to choose the seat farthest to the left Hyemin quickly goes to her seat pulling out her book once again.
"Annyeonghaseyo." she softly whispers to herself finding it hard to pronounce the word correctly. While whispering a few more common words to herself, Hyemin's studying comes to a stop as the sound of loud laughter is heard. Looking up from the book she sees the seven men who were running for the plane at the airport. They all seem to be speaking in a different language, Hyemin identified it to be Korean. Once reaching the back of the plane the group and looked at the remaining seats left. Noticing the empty seat next to her the group faces each other and plays a round of rock-paper-scissors as a way of deciding who sits where.
Not wanting to be caught staring Hyemin averts her eyes back to the book in front of her trying to read the words on the page. Feeling the presence of another person she looks to her side to see one of the men sitting beside her looking through his phone a pout on present on his face. He must have lost at rock-paper-scissors. Heymin thinks to herself while looking back at her book.
"We will now be taking off please fasten seat belts everyone." a robotic voice says. Everyone puts on their seat belts and the plane takes off flying into the sky and towards Seoul.
Incheon International Airport (Seoul, South Korea)
April 13, 2015 ~ 12:00 a.m
"We have safely arrived at our destination. Thank you for riding with Air Canada. Enjoy your stay in Seoul." the robotic voice once again says. The passengers all begin to file out of the plane except for one sleeping woman all the way in the back left corner. Hyemin had manage to fall asleep halfway through the trip and hasn't moved an inch from her spot. The man who was sitting next to her had noticed her lack of movement and looked over at her. Chuckling at the cute look on her face as she slept he put his hand on her shoulder and shook her slightly.
Feeling her body being shaken Hyemin slowly opens her eyes to see a man looking at her with a small smile on his face. Rubbing her eyes to wake herself even further she notices that the man has very handsome features. His black hair down his bangs just touching his forehead, dark brown eyes that twinkled with amusement and a cute dimple on the left side of his cheek.
"You have to get off now. The plane has landed." the man says to her in Korean.
"What?" Hyemin says to him not understanding a word he said.
The man was shocked. The girl looked like she was Korean but she did not understand anything he had said. Maybe she wasn't Korean and just looked it. Seeing as the man wasn't replying Hyemin looks around to see that the plane is completely empty.
"Oh my gosh," she exclaims while grabbing her backpack and putting it on, now just realizing that the plane has arrived in Seoul. The man looks at her still a little shocked. He didn't know what to say to this woman, she clearly only knew English, which is a language he is not very confident in speaking.
"A-Are you okay?" he asks her in the best English he could muster.
Hyemin stops for a second and looks over at him, "Yeah I'm okay. Thank you." she says giving the man a small smile before quickly getting of the plane. The man was left stunned by Hyemin's actions, especially her smile. He was dazed for a few moments before snapping out of his trance and heading out of the plane after Hyemin. As he finally enters the airport he sees only one of his group members there waiting for him.
"Ya Myungsoo what took you so long on the plane?" asks Sunggyu the oldest member of the group.
"Nothing hyung I was just looking for my phone," Myungsoo lied not wanting to explain himself.
"Aish, you better be more careful with where you put things. You took so long that we had to get your luggage for you," Sunggyu nags while giving Myungsoo his black suitcase,"now lets go everyone else is already waiting in the car." The pair quickly makes their way to the exit trying to go unnoticed by anyone.
After Hyemin had exited the plane she made a beeline towards the luggage pick up area. She was finally here, the place where she's always wanted to go, her birthplace. Excited to spend the whole summer learning about the country she was born in Hyemin began to walk faster. Arriving at the pick up center Hyemin starts to search for her black suitcase. Spotting the only black suitcase in the middle of the conveyor belt she grabs it not bothering to read the name on the tag, 'Kim Myungsoo' the tag read. As she exits the airport she passes by a familiar pair one of the two was holding a black suitcase exactly like Hyemin's.
