Trouble For Everyone
I can't believe I did that. I jumped into a freezing cold river for some random girl that I've never met before. I don't even know her name yet!
"Okay, My Lady, my name is Nathaniel Edwards. This lovely man next to me is Devan Zavier. He's the one who dove into the river and saved you if you wanted to know."
Oh my god... Lovely man? Me? What is wrong with that kid? She doesn't need to know who WE are, WE need to know who SHE is.
"Nathaniel and D-Devan...?"
"Yeah! Now, can you tell us who you-"
"Who's that?"
She pointed towards my dad, who slightly jumped but sighed.
"I'm Devan's father, Jacob Zavier."
She slowly nodded as her eyes fell to the floor.
"L-Liza. That's my name."
Great! Now we know her name! Okay, for now, we can just hide her here until we think of something.
"You, Devan, you're the one who saved me?"
I nodded in reply as she gave me a glance from the side. She tried to hide it, but I could see the small smile on her face.
"Thank you very much."
I smiled and chuckled, and that got her to look up at me.
"Why are you laughing?"
"I'm sorry. I'm not laughing at you personally. It's just I never thought that I would be thanked by a Unique."
She suddenly gasped and dropped the blanket. With a somewhat angry look on her face, she stomped up to me.
"You may be a Regular, but you saved my life, and hence, I owe it to you."
"Whoa! No need to be so dramatic! You don't have to owe me your life. Plus, Nate helped too so you'd have to split it."
She then giggled and stepped away. I can't believe this is happening. I can't believe how deep we are in this shit.
"Alright, fine. If I cannot owe my life to you, then I shall negotiate with the Priests and Priestesses. I shall ask them to ignore this and allow you three to live."
"Three? I didn't know you cared for my dad."
"Oh yes. He was gracious enough to give me hospitality. I am grateful."
Oh my god! She's so pure! I feel so bad...
"Okay, now that we have that settled, why don't we go eat something warm?"
My dad suggested as he walked towards the kitchen. I sighed as Liza slowly nodded and followed my dad into said room.
After we all ate dinner, including Liza, the three of us went upstairs, to my room. We sat around my bed, literally just staring at each other in silence.
"Liza-"
Nate froze when she shot her head up and stared at him.
"I can call you that, right?"
"Huh? Oh yes, of course."
"Haha... cool. Okay, so Liza, you said you were going to talk with the higher-ups and get us off the hook?"
She nodded with an extreme amount of enthusiasm. Man, this is so troublesome. First, she's the one who fell into the river, and second, why did I have to go and jump in after her?
People say that meeting a Unique is something to be proud of but at the same time, it is also something to regret. Uniques and Regulars aren't meant to meet. When they do, nothing good ever really comes out of it. Like earlier. We saved Liza, and now either we'll get punished, or she might. That's how this works. The Uniques may be sacred people, but in my eyes, they are no better than us. Those who break the main rules are punished and might be sentenced to death. That's something that everyone knows. I mean, we have very similar rules.
Liza says that she'll talk to the higherups and try to get us off the hook, but from my own experience, not everyone can be trusted. Just because she's a Unique and has a 'pure' heart, doesn't mean that we can trust her. Although, I don't think Nate is having a hard time doing that.
The night slipped away just like Liza did. She slipped away in the night and went back to her own home. It's not like I wanted her to stay, if she had, it would only have brought me, Nate and my dad more trouble. I don't know about them, but I'd rather not have that happen.
Morning came and breakfast was served between the three of us. It was something small but filling. Eggs and bacon. All the protein kind of fills you up, even if you don't actually eat that much.
I don't know what Liza is telling the Priests and Priestesses but I hope that she is doing what she said she'd do.
"Dev."
I wonder what will happen to us. I mean, we saved her, and that counts for something, right?
"Dev."
I just hope they don't end up killing us. I don't want to die. I also don't want to be the reason my dad and Nate have to die along with me. I don't want my mom to mourn over her lost family when she's already lost, one son.
"Devan!"
"What?"
"A Priestesses is here. She wants the three of us to go the Bridge with her."
Oh shit. This is happening. It's happening now. Damn it. Alright. Calm down, Devan. Calm down.
The Priestess brings me, Nate and my dad to the Bridge. Standing on the other side is Liza with another Priest. Her head hung low and her hair covered her face. My guess... She couldn't convince them and we're all going to be killed instead. Ha. Great. I can't believe I was so stupid as to jump in and save her.
"Saving someone is not something you should regret Devan Zavier. It is something to be proud of. Whether the person you saved is Unique or not."
"W-What? How'd you-"
"I know many things. I know about your mother, your brother, and all the events that have happened in your past. Not only you. Your friend Nathaniel as well."
"Whoa! What do you mean by that lady?!"
"Nate! Manners dude."
"You two have piqued my interest. You saved Miss Liza, even though you knew she was a Unique. You knew the consequences, yet jumped in any way. That is bravery. The bravery of the highest caliber. People might call standing up to someone brave, however, saving someone at the cost of your own life, is far braver. You, Devan, risked your life to save hers, even though you could have lost your own. And you, Nathaniel, helped the two get to warmth. Nurtured them back to health. No one could ask for a more caring and lovable companion."
Holy shit. She just said that. A PRIESTESS just said that. What the hell? Ha ha ha. I was wrong. This isn't trouble for everyone.
