Three Regulars and A Unique

Nate and I sat underneath the Cherry Tree and just talked. That's what we normally do. We chat about things we did or are doing at school. Since he and I don't have many classes together, we never really know what the other is doing.

"Dev, do you think that my parents will stop fighting eventually?"

"Of course. It's probably just a phase married couples go through."

Nate nodded as he slightly showed a small smile. I, myself, didn't know what he was smiling about so I rose an eyebrow.

"Okay, if that's just phase, then I'll change the subject."

"Hmm?"

"What about that girl that you were staring at earlier? That white hair of hers was entrancing, wasn't it?"

I slowly nodded as I stared up at the branches of the Old Cherry Tree.

"Yeah, it was."

"Ha! I knew it! Dude, you know that we can't make any contact with the Uniques! Stop being so interested!"

"I can't help it. I've never seen anyone like her before."

"Hey! Whoa, whoa whoa! You're not saying you like this chick, are you?!"

"No. That's not it. It's not that I like her, she just... intrigues me somehow."

"Dude, what the hell?! You got me all worried for nothing!"

We both chuckled as everything fell silent. I slowly turned to face the river-

Wait! Someone's standing there!

"Dude, look. I think it's the girl I saw earlier."

I said to Nate, getting his attention while pointing at the girl. She stood at the VERY edge of the river. What the hell is she doing?! She'll fall in!

Just as I thought that she slipped and began to tumble down. Nate and I jumped up and began to race towards the river.

"If she falls in, she's dead dude!"

"I know!"

As we ran she slowly fell, helplessly, into that freezing river. Now, I know it's stupid for me to do this, but... as a desperate attempt at saving this Unique girl, I dove into that river without a second thought.

I don't know about what Nate would've thought, but as soon as that water made contact with my body, I froze up. It sent more than just chills down my spine as I swam, which I could just BARELY do.

I desperately swam through that freezing water, reaching for this girl. My eyes were slightly open, and from what I could see, she was motionless. Within a few more seconds of swimming, thankfully, I got my arm around her waist and started swimming up towards the surface. I tried, but with the extra weight, swimming was even harder than it was at first. Sadly, before I reached the top, my body gave out and became completely numb.

Shit... I gotta get back up. I mean, that's what I want to do, but I can barely feel my body and I'm running out of breath!

Suddenly, I felt the slight touch of a hand wrapping around my wrist and pulling me and the girl up.

The young boy's friend dragged the two teenagers to the edge of the river. Nathaniel rushed to his friends' side, who desperately gasped for air.

"Devan, dude, come on!"

Devan finally coughed up the water that was in his lungs and inhaled deeply. Just as Nathaniel was rushing to help him, Devan asked-

"How's.. t-the girl?"

The blue haired boy moved to the white-haired girls' side and leaned down to check if she was breathing.

"She isn't breathing and she's freezing cold!"

"Use CPR! We didn't l-learn that in school for n-nothing!"

Nathaniel nodded as he began performing CPR on the girl.

My dad came back into the room with two more blankets and a cup of hot chocolate, which he handed to me. Nate sat in the chair across from me as I sipped my hot chocolate and looked at the girl. She lay on the couch with like three blankets covering her. My dad had set the fire and was pretty much worrying himself crazy.

"Dev, are you sure you're okay? You were under there for a pretty damn long time."

"Yeah, I-I'm fine Nate, don't worry."

"Then why the hell are you stuttering like that?! UGH!"

Nate jumped up and began pacing around the living room. My dad, sadly, joined him in that motion. I sat there staring at this girl, who we had just saved from freezing and/or drowning. Her hair was a beautiful white and looked like it would reach all the way to her butt- Or..., you know what I mean!

"Nate! Dad! Can you two just sit down and be q-quiet!?"

"No! I just watched my best friend almost die! I'm not doing to calm down-"

"That's not what I asked Nathaniel! You guys stressing out only stresses me out more!"

Damn it. I hate it when they do this. The last time this happened was a few months back. I got really annoyed by this kid in my class and ended up getting into a fight with him. Afterward, Nate found me beaten and bruised and scrambled me home. There, my dad started worrying himself sick, while Nate paced around the room like he is now.

"Damn it, what the hell are we going to do?! There is a Unique in our house right now Devan."

"Dad, I know."

"What if the Priests and Priestesses find out she's gone and come looking for her?!"

"Dad-"

"If they find her here, they might kill us!"

"Dad, listen-

"Oh god! We're dead!"

"DAD!"

Both Nate and my dad froze and looked at me.

"Calm down. If they DO come, we'll just explain it to them."

"Yeah, but dude, if we do that, then she'll be punished for going to the river, right? That would make the whole saving thing we just did pointless."

I hate that he's right. If we tell them what happened, then she'll be punished. However, if we don't tell them, then we're practically signing our own death warrants. Now, I don't know about my dad and Nate, but I sure as hell don't want to die just yet-

"Ngh..."

"Ah! She's awake!"

Nate said, running to the girls' side. I slowly stood and approached her. My dad stayed a few feet away.

"W-Where am I?"

She asked quietly, sitting up hesitantly. Nate jumped and slightly gasped. This guy... Ugh.

"You're in my house. You fell into the river, remember?"

As the girl slowly nodded and looked around, she seemed to freeze in fear.

"You're-"

"What?"

"You're all Regulars!"

She exclaimed, jumping up and away from us. She backed away and into the wall as we all tried to calm her.

"Look, we aren't going to hurt you. We just want to make sure you're okay."

Nate slowly approached her with a smile on his face. She quietly whimpered and tried to move away.

"Why are you scared?"

"Of course she's scared of you, idiot! Anyone would be scared of that face of yours."

Nate gasped and turned to look at me.

"How dare you! My face is just fine thank you very much!"

Suddenly, the girl slightly giggled. I stared at her as she realized what she had done.

"Oh my god! I've broken all three rules!!! Oh my god!"

"W-What? What rules?"

I asked, stepping closer to her. Wait! What kind of an idiot am I? What am I doing?! I should be asking if she's okay!

"Nevermind that! Tell us, are you okay? You should be freezing."

She hesitantly nodded after looking away. I sighed and pulled the blanket off my shoulders. I then stepped in front of her and wrapped the blanket around her. She grabbed onto the corners and cuddled up.

"Thank you."

Ha. Didn't expect her to say that. I mean... come on. We may have saved her life and all, but we're Regulars, and she's a Unique.
