Potential
"You two have piqued my interest. You saved Miss Liza, even though you knew she was a Unique. You knew the consequences, yet jumped in any way. That is bravery. The bravery of the highest caliber. People might call standing up to someone brave, however, saving someone at the cost of your own life, is far braver. You, Devan, risked your life to save hers, even though you could have lost your own. And you, Nathaniel, helped the two get to warmth. Nurtured them back to health. No one could ask for a more caring and lovable companion."
I still can't believe she said that. A Priestess saying that to two regulars. But what got me the most, is what she said afterward.
We stared at the long white haired Priestess standing in front of us with our mouths open. Nate then took a step towards me.
"Dev, does this mean we won't be punished?"
I shrugged. I mean, she may be praising us, but there might be a 'but' at the end of this.
"I am not only very grateful to you for saving one of our star students. I am also confused. I do not yet understand why you would risk your life for someone you do not know. Can you tell me?"
"I mean... it's just a... uh... a reflex? It's just something that my brain was telling me to do. It's not like I did it to get some kind of praise or rewards or anything."
"Yeah! We did it because it was the right thing to do at the time."
Nate agreed with me as the Priestess gave us a somewhat convinced look. She then looked over to Liza, who stood with her head slightly towards the ground. Did they not tell her what they were going to do to us?
"Miss Liza, can you please come here for a moment?"
She wants her to cross the Bridge?! What the hell? I didn't think that ever happened! As Liza crossed the Priestess pulled the two of us closer to the Bridge.
"What would you say the reason is for these two boys saving you?"
"I don't think they were lying. I believe they did it because they thought it to be right. I do not think these two boys are at all corrupt."
"Wait, wait, wait! Not to be rude, but Dev and I are teenagers if you've forgotten. Teenagers are not pure of heart all the time-"
"I am aware. However, Miss Liza has spoken and hence I will take her words into consideration when deciding your punishment."
Crap... Crap, oh Crap! She'll kill us. You know what? No. She won't kill us. She's praised us, taken Liza's words into account. I don't think she'll have us killed. I have to stay calm-
"I have decided on a worthy punishment."
SHIT SHIT SHIT... Here it comes.
"You two, Nathaniel Edwards and Devan Zavier, are hereby..."
Here it comes...
"Uniques."
Wait... what? D-Did she just make u-us U-Uniques? What the...? What is going on?! Me and Nate! Uniques! I'm going crazy!
"Wait, us? Uniques? Are you sure ma'am? I mean, as I said, we're teenagers."
"Yes. I am very sure."
"If I may, but why choose us? I mean, we just saved her. We did what any other person would've done. What makes us so special?"
I asked her with confusion plastered all over my face. I-I still couldn't believe what she had just said. Me and Nate, Uniques! Just thinking about it makes me crazy.
"I see potential in you two. Great potential. Especially you Devan."
"Potential to become what?"
"Great Magic users. Every Unique has the ability to use magic, and I see that in you two. Nathaniel, you have a fiery spirit but can be as hard as metal. And you, Devan, you are different. I cannot tell what magic you possess. Though I can see the potential."
I nodded as everything I just heard began to process.
"O-Okay. So you see potential in us, and so you're making us... Uniques?"
"Yes. I am indeed. I will need the two of you to gather your things and come with me as soon as you can. If you do not come, I will punish you with death."
Great. Got it, lady. Oh my god... I can't leave my dad. He'd be all alone. He will have lost all of his family-
"Son, don't worry about me. I'd rather you two go than get killed because you saved someone. Go pack your things and meet me back here. I'll send the two of you off. Nate, I'll explain everything to your parents, so don't worry."
"Ah, it's fine. I wasn't going to worry about it. Everything I need is at your house Mister Zach, so... I see no point in going home right now."
"True. Alright. You two head home and get your things. Don't worry. Everything will end up okay, and maybe you'll see your mom while over there Devan."
I couldn't help but smile a little. I would really like to see mom but at the cost of leaving dad, for who knows how long? That's all that I can think about while Nate and I dash back to my house. Once we get there, we start packing up a duffle bag with the necessary items we would need if we were to go on a vacation. Then again, we aren't going on a vacation. We're moving out and going Across the Bridge.
"Dude, do you think that we'll get to learn a bunch of awesome magic?"
"I'm pretty sure that's what the Priestess said, Nate."
"Oh yeah."
As Nate turned back to his own duffle bag, I could see the smile on his face dissipating. I know he doesn't like it when his parents fight, but he still and always will love them. Leaving your family behind for something like magic is dumb, I know, but no one has a choice in the matter. If a Priest or Priestess sees potential in you, then you're done. You can no longer have that normal life that you've been living all your life. You have to go Across the Bridge and learn to use magic. It's ridiculous. Leaving your loved ones behind is something I would NEVER do willingly. Potential, or not, I hate having to do this.
