36 - Beauty and the Fool
The most secluded places are usually the most peaceful one. Ever since my break-up with Tae, this is what I've been seeking out for. Every day, I would head up to the rooftop to clear my mind. It was a place that I could think. Honestly, I needed to think. It was a tough decision my mom asked me to make.
I told Jungkook about it and he said that I should follow through with it. I'm sceptical. Extremely sceptical. I need to think hard on whether it's worth it to scrape up past events. Hence, why I'm heading to the rooftop again.
On the best of days, Jungkook would join me as well. He would sometimes bring me snacks, other times just keep me company. On this particular day, he said that he would meet me there in a bit since he was going to get lunch and hang with the guys for a while.
I had been heading up to the rooftop by myself. All of your bad emotions seem to surface when you're alone. A frenzy of thoughts were going through my head. I know that what mom said was right but at the same time, I'm scared.
Just as I was about to open the door that led to the rooftop, I heard a voice. That voice turned into two. The closer I listened, the more distinct it became. Until I knew exactly who they belonged to.
Irene and Ahreum.
"I'm telling you! Stop arguing with me!" Irene yelled loud enough for me to hear clearly.
"I'm not arguing!"
"Then why are you shouting?!"
Dang. The fact that they're both shouting about why they're shouting. I suddenly heard mumbles. I guessed that they stopped shouting so I placed my ear on the door to hear better.
"That's not the Taehyungie that I know." Ahreum cooed sadly.
"Are you saying that you regret it?" Irene responded, "because I know I do."
There was a short string of silence proceeding her words. I would assume it was for Ahreum to nod or shake her head at Irene's question. That left me wondering what it is they regretted and why it involved Taehyung.
"He's never gonna be mine, is he Irene?" Ahreum asked with a hint of jealousy and sadness in her voice, "he isn't the same since we broke them up."
The words 'broke them up' had caught my attention. Something isn't right. She just sounds so aloof and apathetic now, though. That usual annoying charisma isn't there.
"We should have never gotten between them," Irene spoke out regretfully.
"Why would he even love a person like that?" Ahreum asked, "with her history and all of the rumours. How did he manage to fall for her."
That was it. After hearing that, I lost my patience. I opened the door, allowing the soft creek to be heard by both of them; a look of shock being apparent on both of their faces.
"Because love is more than status," I crooned while slowly walking up to them, "love is the ability to look past one's flaws and appreciate them unconditionally."
They both were surprised by my presence. I noticed both of their mouths hanging slightly open as they tried to formulate some sort of response.
"H-How long have you..." Irene tried to speak but her words seemed to catch in her throat
"Since you stopped shouting,"
Taking a look at both of their facial expressions, I noticed a sense of hopelessness lingering underneath their surprise—even more than mine. The mood just seemed lamentable or as though they felt remorse for something.
"Y/n... I-" Ahreum chocked on her words just as much as Irene had been, "I'm sorry..."
"Sorry?" I chuckled, "what is it with people and 'sorry' these days."
"Y/n-sshi... it's not what you think..."
"Not what I think?" I asked with irritation laced in my voice, "Because to me it looks like you have something to confess."
Irene and Ahreum both hesitantly nodded at me. It felt good to finally be able to stand up for myself. Thinking about it, none of us standing here were the same people that we used to be. We've all changed in some way.
Ahreum had been quiet the entire time. Her head was down. She didn't want to meet eyes with me. It was as though she was disgusted by my presence of something.
"The truth is," Irene hesitantly spoke and took a long pause to think of her words, "it's our fault that you two broke up."
"I gathered that much from your conversation," I said even more abruptly but still tried to keep calm, "explain. Please."
"Y/n-sshi..." Irene spoke out yet again but her words weren't processed when she tried to speak, "the truth is that Taehyung and I used to date."
"I know. He told me," I said bluntly and she just sighed at my words, "what does that have to do with anything?"
Irene glanced at Ahreum who had stood stagnant, still never uttering a word and never raising her gaze to meet mine.
"They called me back to get you guys to break up," she trailed on. In the corner of my eye, I could see Ahreum beginning to clench her fist, "for Taehyung to find someone better to love..."
"I don't understand... why would you... why—"
"Because I never liked you!" Ahreum suddenly screamed at me. She raised her gaze and what I had seen in her eyes was sadness and rage.
"Why?!" I yelled back, "Ahreum tell me! What did I do wrong?"
"You just got here and all of a sudden you have TaeTae around you! He invited you to lunch! He had coffee with you! He genuinely smiled at you!" She yelled with her fists clenched even tighter, "I tried for so long and I could even get that!"
"And this is what you do?!" I yelled back.
"Yes! Your 'daddy incident' made it so much easier! That gullible fool helped because of the lies I told him," she trailed on, "he helped me break you guys up."
"So what? If you can't have him, nobody can?" I asked, and got no reply, "mom was right... I should report it. I'm tired of falling victim by people that take my past too extreme!"
She was silent at my sudden comment. All of her actions were driven by jealousy. Pure envy. This is proof that those who bully you are just doing it to feel superior.
Until something clicked. I thought she meant Taehyung at first but if he helped break us up, it couldn't have been him.
"You mentioned a gullible fool," I stated bluntly, "who is that?"
They both looked at each other, Irene's glare being more powerful since Ahreum might have opened a can of worms. Irene had taken in a deep sigh with her eyes closed as she prepared to tell me who it was.
"Park Jimin," she said with a weak exhale.
That was it. At this point, my heart and mind were completely broken. The people that I thought were my friends just proved that they weren't.
"Y/n," Ahreum called out as I was trying to process it all, "...I'm sorry."
Rage was building up in me. I had never felt this way before. The rooftop is supposed to be a place of peace and serenity, but here I'm just getting mixed emotions.
Without thinking twice, I went downstairs as fast as I could. A frenzy of thoughts was filling my head at this moment. I could feel the sadness kicking in as tears began to brim in my eyes. I could also feel the anger overwhelm since a wave of heat kept hitting my body.
This isn't just their fault, it's Tae's and mine as well for letting it happen. That's the most unforgivable thing.
As soon as I had walked into the cafeteria, I saw Jimin and Tae approaching the lunch table that they always sit at. I looked around a bit more and I saw Jungkook standing in the line to get food.
I hastily walked up to them, while trying to keep my tears from falling. Just as they sat down, I had gotten to their table, earning the attention of all of them sitting there. Taehyung just looked shocked to see me there while the others smiled.
Jimin however, looked worried. This was a new feeling for me. This was a new emotion that I felt. Everything was new.
"Y/n, what's the matter?" Taehyung spoke out. I didn't want to hear his voice because it will make me weak, "are you—"
"Are you happy now, Park Jimin?"
