(9) - Who am I ?
"GO FISH!" ACE YELLS AND NAT JUST rolls her eyes as she picks up the card, funny enough...
"It's an ace of hearts..." Natasha murmurs with a smile.
"You aren't supposed to tell me silly," Ace's voice has a happy ring to it as she smiles brightly. Once Natasha pulled her from the river they went back to Ace's house. And ever since then, they've been playing all types of board games. Now they're playing cards since Ace loves all kinds of card games.
Ace asks Nat for the ace of hearts and Natasha rolls her eyes again. "Okay, Rose-" Ace grabs Natasha's wrist, the one that's handing her the card. She didn't like being called Rose since she wasn't Rose but it wasn't too bad coming from Nat's lips.
She closes her eyes and inhales deeply, "You can call me Rose... I mean only if you want to?" Natasha smiles and nods.
"I would love to call you Rose, Ace." Ace's blue eyes get clouded by white lids as she rolls her eyes at how Nat answered. Ace knew already knew that Natasha knew her real name and it made her a bit uneasy. It made her question why Natasha was even here.
Ace takes the card and releases Nat's wrist. She notices she has all four of the ace's and sets them down on the floor. Natasha makes note of Ace's trio of four's. "Do you have any..." Natasha clicks her tongue before looking down at the handful of cards she has, "Sevens?" Ace's smile falters as she realizes that she has two sevens.
"Yea..." She murmurs sadly and hands Natasha the cards. She looks at her cards, she has a five, two fours, a two and one three. "Any fours?" She asks and when Natasha looks up, Ace sees something weird in the grass green iris'.
Natasha crinkles her brow before pulling the one four she has in her hand, "Ace?" Natasha asks and Ace's eyes meet Natasha's briefly. "Who do you think you are? Like, Ace... or Rose?" Ace's breathing pauses. She didn't know the answer and she sure as hell couldn't distinguish between herself, Ace, or Roseana.
Ace ceased moving completely, she just stiffened as a whole.
Her expression grew confused as her brows crinkled; making her milky skin wrinkle. She chuckled to herself as Natasha watched her, worried for Ace. Who am I? Ace asks herself. She knew she could either be Ace or Rose, but she never thought about who those women were. Ace did know that Ace was a cat burglar, while she knew nothing but Rose's name.
Roseana Damien. That's the type of name that a rich girl would have. Ace did know she wasn't rich, or at least Rose wasn't by the time she became Ace. Ace just wanted answers, "Ace!" She refocuses her eyes onto Natasha's troubled face.
"Yea?" Ace murmurs while moving her eyes to a random piece of banana on the floor. She can vaguely hear Natasha speaking in the background as white noise began to fill her ears. Her vision began to blur and her head felt as light as a feather. She didn't know what was happening, she could feel her heart beating quickly against her chest.
The thumping being the only thing she focused on as it got faster and faster; until suddenly, she felt a shock of pain.
Her head hit the hardwood flooring before she could catch herself and her eyes fell closed with ease. Ace could almost feel Natasha slapping her cheeks and performing compressions on her chest. Ace enjoys the numbness she feels as her mind reels. Who am I? That question alone was able to take her focus away from a lighthearted game of "Go Fish!" to existential crisis questions.
Ace has worried about who she is since she woke up. When she woke up in a puddle of water, in an alleyway somewhere in Harlem she nearly died due to pneumonia. Her body did its own thing and she subconsciously walked to her house without any memory of it. The thing that confuses her to this day is the white coat she was wearing.
Her back has ached ever since then and her right elbow has always given her issues. But she didn't ask why she woke up in a puddle at three am on a cold night in Harlem. There was so much blood, the white coat barely white anymore as the red liquid spread throughout the thick canvas-like material.
"Goddamnit Ace!" The same sound was interrupting her thoughts. She ignored it as she clawed for more information. She saw the same door she always did, but whenever she opened it... she would end up in the hallway again. The hallway with white scratched walls and metal doors with grates on the small windows on the doors.
But everything her eyes fell upon the glass, she only saw darkness. Ace turned to the side and saw something new, a girl with red hair and green eyes. She's uneasy, the only time she ever sees anybody is inside the rooms; so how did this girl get here? Ace takes a step toward the young girl and the girl stands her ground. "Who are you?" Ace asks and her voice sounds like she's underwater.
The girl only stares back at Ace, her eyebrows furrowed and face determined.
Suddenly the girl is running at Ace and Ace jumps out of the way, the girl runs inside the room and Ace follows close behind. This time when Ace opens the door, she's in an actual room. There's a table, concrete floors, and windows. The light streaming in the windows distorts the entire room but something is throwing the color green everywhere. It's a violent green.
The green assaults Ace's eyes and she shields them with her hand. When she does so, the girl with the bangs comes back into view. The girl dashes toward a new door inside the room, Ace tries to ignore the feeling of familiarity as she chases after the girl again. Ace recoils when the knob on the door burns her hand.
The skin on her hand feels raw as she uses the sleeve of her jacket to open the door. The smoke fills Ace's lungs as it feels like something pushed her into the room. The smoke clouds her vision as she uses the same sleeve to cover her mouth in a weak attempt to breathe regularly. "Ace, come back! Please!" It's the girl's voice.
She sounds so far away. Ace begins coughing as the smoke begins to settle in her lungs. Ace cannot see any light and as she stumbles in the darkness she begins falling. Her lungs hurt even more as she screams so loud she wakes up, gasping for air. "Oh my god! It worked!" Natasha hugs Ace to her and laughs in glee.
