Chapter Six
Once it was Saturday, I went to see Ryder again. When I got to his house, I found him on the floor sleeping with the wolf. I smiled and shook his shoulders, gently. He woke up and blinked his eyes open before sitting up in front of me.
"Morning!" I laughed
"Morning..." He rubbed his eyes. I set my gaze on the wolf, who was now sitting up and licking his paws. He didn't have his bandages on and his wounds were healing nicely.
"What do you want to do?" He asked, before standing up.
"I don't mind..." I replied as I stood up and sat at the big table. I noticed a packet of playing cards lying on the window sill. "Do you know how to play 'Hearts'?" I asked and pointed at the little red and white box of cards. He nodded a reply and picked them up. Sitting in front of me, he handed me some cards. Once he had dealt the cards out we began to play the game.
He had won a match and so had I, so we decided to play one last game to see who was the winner. The wolf was sitting in the chair next to us, watching.
It was my turn. Scanning my deck, I paused only to look up at the card he had last placed down. King of Hearts. I had no idea how I was suppose to beat him now that he had used such a high card that was also a heart.
Suddenly, the wolf snatched a card out of my hands and dropped it onto the pile. It landed face up, it's giant heart looking upwards. The Ace of Hearts.
There was no way that Ryder could beat that. I had won.
"Woah!" Ryder smiled and petted the wolf on the head "Didn't know you played cards, boy! You like Poker? Solitaire?" He laughed
"Ryder..." I smiled "I think I know what his new name might be..."
"What?"
"How does this sound?" I asked "Ace."
