Nagbuga muna ng inis na hininga si Phoenix bago inisang lagok ang shot glass ng hard drink na nakasilbi sa kanyang harapan. Agad na gumuhit ang pait ng alak sa kanyang lalamunan ngunit hindi sapat iyon upang makalimot siya.

      No damn drink will be good enough, he thought. No drink available for humans can make him forget about yesterday─ the last day he will ever spend with Gabbie.

      Malinaw pa sa isipan niya ang lahat ng mga nangyari kahapon. Her laugh still rings in his ears. He can still feel her warmth running on his skin. The taste of her sweet luscious lips still lingers on his mouth. And her tearful last words will forever be tattooed on his mind.

      He huffed and slowly uttered an oath. He had never felt so angry and helpless all his life. And what's more frustrating is that, he'd been sitting on that noisy bar for almost half an hour now but his psycho friend Paul is still nowhere in sight!

      Damn Paul for getting caught up again with his new wife! Hindi niya alam kung maiinis siya o matutuwa. But one thing is for sure, he envies Paul and Nikki.

      Two months ago, he had never thought that his heart was capable of loving. He had never thought about love all his life. He was well acquainted with attraction, pleasure and all the other stuff that goes along with it but never love. He taught then that love was just an overrated term for attraction. That only fools fall for the illusion of it.

      But then, Gabbie came and turned his world upside down.

      Ah, his Gabriela. The only woman who had shown him that not all woman would swoon around him. The only woman who would clash with him head on even when his anger is at its worse and still get away with it. The only woman who'd put up with him even if he was difficult to be around with. The only woman who had seen his scars. The only woman he had ever loved and yet...

     Nang ilapag niya ang shot glass sa counter, muli iyong nilagyan ng alak ng bartender. Nagmabilis siyang inumin iyon. But... still the same. He still feel as helpless and desparate as he was yesterday.

      He swallowed bitterly as he welcomed memories of Gabbie in his mind.

      He remembered how she got him during their first encounter in his hospital suite. He's supposed to be angry with the reckless driver who had injured his heel, but she looked cute on her pink scrub suit with that afraid-hesistant look on her face. And so he teased her with the ride me joke that most woman he encountered would fall for. But instead of a flirtatious grin or a sweet smile, all he got again was some nice beating on his injured heel! When he learned that Gabbie was also working at Angelicum Hospital, nagreklamo na siya nang tuluyan sa management. He was determined to slap her not just with a lawsuit, but also with the threat of unemployment. But she came to their next meeting with her lawyer, looking as determined as their last encounter. He knew she was afraid but her strong personality just won't give way. She was too strong she even announced to the world that she's still a virgin!

      So he thought that his joke the night before really came too far. He wanted to apologize but Henri was really determined to give Gabbie some jailtime. He would've let Henri get his way but then Gabbie's father came and begged for his daughter's freedom. He was deeply moved by her father's plea so he offered her a deal instead─ he will withdraw the case and she will be his all-around maid and therapist. Naisip niya kasi na dahil ilang linggong magiging limitado ang galaw niya, hindi siya makakalabas-labas sa oras na gusto niya. And so he will be stuck in his penthouse alone. And being alone is the thing he dreads the most. So he wanted to have a companion.

      When she agreed to the contract, he knew she'd be difficult. And difficult she really was. Unang araw pa lang nito sa penthouse, lagi na siya nitong tinatalakan. She'd teach him about getting his place clean and all the other stuff he didn't have the time deal with. Agad naman itong bumait nang pagbantaan niya itong itutuloy na lang ang kaso. Nag-sorry pa nga ito e kaso lang panay ang irap sa kanya. Ang akala niya, matatapos ang araw na iyon na puro na lang sila away. But she even shared with him her favorite food. At nakakabakla mang aminin, that simple gesture warmed his heart. He knew then that even though Gabbie would be difficult to live with for some time, he'd surely have some fun. And fun began when that night, she crawled under his blanket, half-asleep and murmuring. He would've complained pero hinayaan na lang niya. Naisip niyang bukas na lang niya ito papagalitan. But when he found her peacefully sleeping beside him in the morning, the story changed and so was the beating of his heart. She looked so defenseless, oblivious to her surroundings, so wrapped in profound sleep while the soft light of the morning sun played around her beautiful sleeping form. And for some unknown strange feeling, he kissed her!

      Then, he felt like a sex-starved teenager afterwards. He can't believe that he kissed a sleeping woman─ his stranger maid to be exact! And so before he could do anything he'd regret, he had tried to waste his primal energy on working out.

      He thought he was already winning against that strange feeling, moreso when they had that seriously heated argument about her going out for hours that day. He was convinced that when he is angry, the strange feeling would go away. However, his grandmother came and he was forced to come up with the lame excuse that he and Gabbie was in some kind of a relationship so that his grandmother would quit persuading him on going home to San Gabriel where his life would be more boring and miserable than it already were. He was glad that Gabbie was more than willing to participate on his little game. Pero hindi rin natapos ang problema niya nang gabing iyon dahil tumawag si Penny. Gaya ng nakaraang ilang linggo mula nang iwan siya nito, tumatawag ulit ito. Anger filled him again that night. Sinong hindi, matapos nitong umalis, tatawag-tawag ito sa kanya na parang hindi ito ang dahilan kung bakit niya nilayasan ng ilang linggo ang bahay niya dahil ayaw niyang muling mag-isa.

      At hindi pa sapat na inis siyang natulog nang nagdaang gabi, talagang dumagdag pa ang ginawa ng lola niya pag-aayos ng family picture nila sa lumang bureau na ipinilit nitong dalhin niya sa bahay niya. He was so outraged that he lashed out on his grandmother. Umalis ang lola niya nang hindi siya kinakausap. Hindi pa siya nakuntento, pati si Gabbie pinaalis din niya. For some reason he wanted to be alone to think. Or what he probably meant was finally accept the fact that after two years, he is alone again living his miserable life.

      When Penny left, he was convinced that no woman would ever be sane enough to stick with him without wanting marriage. And the idea scared him. He hated marriage and so is being alone. Nang iwan siya ni Penny, gusto niya sana itong sundan sa Amerika para suyuin at pabalikin sa buhay niya. Kumportable na siya kay Penny e. Only, he was way full of pride to do that. And so he spent the next few weeks going around, looking for another woman who would agree with his terms on relationships. But all he found was another stalker who caused him his accident.

       That night, he'd decided to get his wits straight and just move on by accepting the fact that he will grow old... alone.

      When he had enough wallowing for the day, he went to SGU to further clear his head and to remind him where he should start again. He wanted to stay there for the night─ push himself to exhaustion until he falls asleep. But to his surprise, Gabbie came and asked him go home. Bukod sa lola at mga stalker niya, wala pang ibang taong bumalik sa buhay niya na umalis o pinaalis niya. Si Gabbie pa lang. Right there and then, he was convinced that Gabbie is different. If he was stubborn, Gabbie is unyielding. Hindi siya nito tinantan hanggang hindi siya nito naaakay pauwi. She even had the guts to make a deal with him involving shooting balls when she can't even throw a ball without closing her eyes!

       Napailing siya sa naalala. The incomparable guts of Gabbie The Virgin.

      He opened up to her that night. Hindi niya alam kung bakit, hindi naman siya obligado. Pero pakiramdam niya kailangan. It's just that with Gabbie, he felt his emotions are safe. He didn't need to pretend to be the dashing playboy debonaire basketball superstar everybody knew and loved. With Gabbie, he can be just himself- raw, unfiltered, wounds, scars and all.

      She had given him a pep talk about life. A thing no one had ever done to him. Not even his grandmother nor Penny. She was so honest and full of wisdom. Stubborn. Determined. Admirable.

      And then the strange feeling came again. Binubulabog ulit ang puso. Nililito ang isip niya. Lalo pa siyang naguluhan nang bigla siya nitong yakapin matapos nilang mag-usap. It was a genuine hug of concern from a stranger. In return, he gave her a kiss on her forehead na lalo lamang nagpatindi sa nararamdaman niyang gulo sa kanyang dibdib.

      Dammit! Ilang beses na siyang nakahawak at nakahalik ng babae, ang ilan nga naikama pa niya, pero hindi kailanman nabulabog nang ganoon ang sistema niya.

      He then spent the next few weeks nursing that strange feeling. Akala niya kasi kapag hinayaan lang niya, mawawala rin. But it didn't go away. Instead, it grew stronger every day and it freaked him out because he had never felt anything like it all his life. Then it caught him, he's in love with Gabbie or so Google told him when he searched about the signs of being in love. Gabbie had caught his heart without him even knowing... hook, line and even effin sinker!

      He actually planned on ending their contract early and be honest with her but he got sidetracked when Paul and Nikki's relationship got on rocky ground. Being a good friend, nakiplano siya kung paano matatakasan ang controlling step mother ni Nikki. He even acted the part well when Paul asked him to pose as Nikki's new beau. And to make things believable, pinauwi niya si Gabbie upang magawa nila nang maayos ang plano. Everything was doing well only if he hadn't received that call that changed everything. Gabbie drunkcalled him and admitted that she's falling for him.

      Pakiramdam niya nanalo siya ulit ng MVP kahit hindi siya nakapaglaro sa bagong conference. Knowing that someone you love loves you back is like winning a million bucks many times over. That's why he waited for her to return to his house the next day. Naghanda pa siya ng candle lit dinner, flowers, band and all that jazz or so Google, again, had told him to do to impress his lady. Only to witness the greatest scare of his life when he saw Rosie attacking Gabbie with a knife.

      Mabuti na lang naroon si Paul. Ito ang agad na tumawag ng pulis at tumulong kay Gabbie. Hindi siya madasaling tao, kulelat nga rin ang grade niya sa Christian Living subject niya noon. Pero nang gabing 'yon, habang yakap niya si Gabbie at sugatan ang kamay nito, natawag na niya 'ata ang lahat ng santo na nakilala niya mula elementary hanggang college. That night, he promised himself that no one, no one would ever hurt Gabbie again as long as he breathes.

      Ang plano niyang pag-aalaga sana rito pag-uwi nila sa penthouse ay naudlot nang biglang lumitaw sa ospital ang kaibigan nitong si Mac. Wala siyang nagawa nang magdesisyon si Gabbie na umuwi sa kanila nang gabing 'yon. Napuyat siya buong gabi kakaisip kay Gabbie. At dahil ayaw na niyang pahirapan pa ang sarili niya, inumaga na niya ang pagbisita rito kinabukasan. Balak na sana niyang magtapat noon, kaya lang pakiramdam niya wrong timing. Sabi rin ni Paul na kailangang daanin niya sa dahan-dahan at panliligaw si Gabbie dahil hindi ito kagaya ng mga nakakasalamuha nilang mga babae na madaling paamuin. Paul even challenged him that should he won't be able to talk to Gabbie that day, he'd have to give up his house for his friend and his new wife for a few days. Nasaling ang pride niya, pumayag siya. Wala pang babaeng humindi sa kanya e. At dahil alam niya ang nararamdaman ni Gabbie sa kanya, kumpiyansa siyang mananalo sa deal. Only to find the psycho sabotaging his visit to Gabbie. Pero hindi sa presensiya ni Paul siya na nainis, sa presensiya ni Mac na nagsabing manliligaw din daw kay Gabbie ng gabing 'yon!

      The effin guts! Ito nga ang bestfriend ng ilang taon pero hindi naman na-inlove dito si Gabbie. Sa kanya in-love si Gabbie. Siya ang mahal. Siya lang dapat. And he'll do everything just to keep it like that. Kahit lumaklak pa siya ng ilang bote ng lambanog ni Tatay Manding.

      Sa totoo lang, wala naman talaga sa plano niya ang magpakalasing nang araw na 'yon e. He's there to talk to Gabbie, to take care of her, and probably if luck was on his side, confess his feelings for her─ slowly, as the psycho Paul instructed.

      Pero iba ang linya ng pagtatanong ng tatay ni Gabbie. Masyadong straight to the point. At natakot siya. Natakot siya na baka magbago ang nararamdaman ni Gabbie sa kanya kapag nalaman nitong mahal nga ito ni Mac. Kaya naman nagpasya siyang ubusin na lang ang lambanog ni Tay Manding nang matapos na ang usapan. But he did not expect that the local drink would knock the daylights out of him! Nawala ang pagkakataon niyang makausap si Gabbie. Pero bumawi naman siya kinabukasan. They were messaging each other the whole day like they were some love-crazed couple enduring a long distance relationship. It was all new to him but he liked it. He enjoyed it.

      It would've been that fun for the next days only if he hadn't forgot his phone in his house when he moved out for a few days, as part of the deal he made with Paul. Ni ayaw sumagot ng kaibigan niya sa mga tawag niya para sana ibigay nito ang phone niya. And what's worse was when he went home to pick up his things for his travel to San Gabriel, Nikki gave her an envelope from Gabbie, full of money and another contract stating that she'd just pay the damages she caused from his accident so that she'll cease to be her maid and therapist.

      Kinabahan siya. Pakiramdam niya lumalayo ito sa kanya. Agad niya itong tinawagan pero nainis lang siya dahil parang may kasama itong iba at paranag may kakaibang ginagawa. Nalaman din niyang si Brandy ang kasama nito noon at pinag-trip-an lang siya. Brandy admitted it to him one time when he was waiting for Gabbie at the hospital.

       Pero nang panahong 'yon, pakiramdam niya sasabog ang ulo niya sa taranta lalo pa at ayaw nitong sabihin kung nasaan ito. He planned on tracking her pero in-off nito ang cellphone nito. Sumugod siya sa bahay nito pero kahit si Tay Manding hindi alam kung nasaan ito. He stayed there till the morning pero ni anino ni Gabbie hindi niya nakita.

      Umuwi siya tuloy sa San Gabriel na inis, galit, at lito. But it was as if fate was on his side when that same day, Gabbie appeared right in front of their house in San Gabriel. She was a little dirty and muddy but he was fine with it. Gabbie was with him. He's supposed to be angry at her but then, love can make you forgive and forget easily. Nainis lang siya nang kaunti nang ilang beses nitong sabihin ang pag-uwi at ang tungkol sa bago nilang kontrata. Nang banggitin nito ang ang tungkol sa pambabahay niya raw ng ibang babae, nagkaroon na siya ng ideya kung bakit ito nagpaplanong lumayo sa kanya.

      He had to admit his feelings to his grandmother that night. He even called Paul and Nikki and invited them to San Gabriel so that his psycho friend could explain his innocence on everything. They can't make it to his grandmother's party but they could attend Raine's simple baby shower the next day. Apparently, sasadyain daw talaga ni Paul si Carlo dahil may importanteng pag-uusapan ang mga ito. He agreed. He only need to make sure that Gabbie stays with him for the next two days. But it was feat. She was so stubborn as a rock and was so determined to go home.

      Buti na lang pumayag itong manatili para sa birthday party ng lola niya. She looked so beautiful that night but she wasn't even aware of it. He knew she was uneasy, more of aloof to his kind of crowd. He had heard the subtle contemptous comments about her─ the silent mockery, the questionable stares and snide comments of their visitors. He heard everything. But for him she's the only star that night─ shining with unpararelled brightness among the rest. So, to make her know how he felt, he gave her the Astrum's necklace. She cried that night and he exactly knew why. She begged to go home, but he can't allow her. So he begged for her to stay for another day which she hesitantly agreed.

       The next day, he would've jumped in glee when Paul and Nikki proved his innocence pero pakiramdam niya, inaagaw ni Dax ang limelight na para kanya. Kung hindi lang niya siguro kaibigan si Dax, baka nasuntok na niya. Kaya naman nang hatiran siya nito ng pagkain sa kwarto niya nang gabing 'yon, hindi na siya nag-aksaya pa ng oras. He kissed her. Again. This time, he did not hold back. He wanted to let her know how he felt in deed, if words won't suffice. He would've taken her there and then but then he reminded himself that Gabbie is different. He promised himself that he'd take it slow with Gabbie. And treat her like a man should treat a woman he loves. He hesistanly sent her away that night with a reminder to remember him on her sleep.

      It was not until the next day after they went home that he realized that he can't live in lies and pretense anymore. He had to tell her how he felt. So he coaxed her to play a game of questions and answers. Which at first, she begrudgingly agreed playing. He got his way in the end. He get to hear her confession, in turn, he made his easily. The joy he felt that night was incomparable. It was as if the heavens was finally on his side and wanted him to be happy and complete.

      Only, the joy did not last long when a few days after that, Penny came to see and tell him that she's pregnant with his child.

       Noong una hindi siya naniwala. He was careful. They were careful. The only time they had unprotected sex was when they had break-up sex before she left. Sinamahan niyang magpa-check up si Penny sa kakilala nitong doktor. The doctor confirmed that she indeed got pregnant around the time before they broke up.

      He immediately got confused, angry and disappointed. Ilang beses niyang itinaboy si Penny dahil natakot siya para sa kanila ni Gabbie. He loved Gabbie so much that he promised to do everything to protect what they have. Natakot siya. Kaya naman ginawa niya ang lahat para mailihim kay Gabbie ang nangyayari sa kanya.

      He tried to fix the situation he's in. He offered child support in exchanged of her silence, but Penny refused. She insisted on marriage. A thing he cannot give to any other woman but just Gabbie. Then he thought of Paternity Test. He thought that it would give him time to explain to Gabbie everything. Minadali rin niya ang pagpo-propose kay Gabbie. He wanted to assure her that they have a future together no matter what happens.

      He was sure he could think of something. He was sure he could get away with it.

      But then his mother unexpectedly came into the picture and revealed his secret. And after everything they went through, Gabbie ended up letting him go for him to do what is right.

       Muli niyang dinala ang shot glass sa bibig niya. Kahit siguro paulit-ulit niyang alalahanin si Gabbie, gano'n pa rin ang ending nila. He would spend the rest of his life being a good father to his child and tied to a woman he doesn't love.

       Maybe this is his punishment from the heavens for playing around and taking things for granted. So, he had to live with it for the rest of his life.

      Maya-maya pa, nakita na niyang dumating si Paul.

      "Ang tagal mo," reklamo niya nang tumabi ito sa kanya sa bakanteng upuan sa tabi niya sa bar. "Can't get over your wife, eh?"

      Ngumiti si Paul at nilagok ang laman ng shot glass nito. "I was at work, psycho." Ibinaba nito ang shot glass sa counter. "So, why did you call me here?"

      Hinintay niyang punuin muna ng bartender ang shot glass niya, ininom ang laman niyon, bago sumagot. "I'm selling my penthouse. Buy it."

      Paul scoffed. "Seryoso ka?"

      "Never been serious."

      Tumingin sa kanya ang kaibigan, kunot ang noo. "Why so sudden?"

       "I can't stay there anymore. Gabbie spent so much time with me there. It would be too difficult for me," sagot niya. "So, are you buying it?"

       "How much?"

      "25 Million."

      Napamura si Paul. "Where do you think will I get that much money, you pscyho?"

       Nagkibit balikat siya. "I don't know. Try being a gigolo if you'd like. Hindi ka pa naman mukhang laspag," natatawang kantyaw niya.

      "Gago! Gagawin mo pa akong gigolo mabili lang 'yang penthouse mo." Panay ang iling nito bago muling itungga ang alak na nasa shot glass nito.

      "C'mon your security agency is earning dollars. The effin CIA is paying you dollars to be exact! And don't you ever deny it you pscyho! Two of my childhood friends works the same way as you."

      Hindi umimik si Paul, muli lang uminom ng alak. "Puwede bang hulugan?"

       Humugong siya at umiling. "Ilang gives?"

        Tumitig ito sa kanya, parang nagco-compute. "How about 25? One million per year."

       "Effin stingy!" bulalas niya. "Ang kuripot mo!"

       Natawa ito. "Hindi naman kasi ako gaya mo na magtrabaho man o hindi, kayang magwaldas ng pera. I lay my life on the line protecting people just to earn a million bucks and you know that."

      Humugong siya at inisang lagok ulit ang laman ng kanyang shot glass.

       "I'll try to talk to my wife about it. You know what they say, when you're married, there is no other law you should abide with than your wife." Natawa siya. "Natawa ka pa. Yeah, good luck with that, psycho. Tignan lang nating kung hindi magbago ang isip mo kapag kasal na kayo ni Penny."

      He forced a smile. The last line Paul said seemed like a sentence than a statement to him.

       "By the way, I saw your file. Hindi naman sa pinag-aksayan ko ng panahon, wala lang talaga akong magawa. Anyway, you're legally adopted by your grandmother?"

       Tumango siya at sumenyas sa bartender na lagyan pa ng alak ng alak ang shot glass nila. "Yeah, what about it?"

       "Nothing. It's just that you never told me about it e ilang taon na tayong magkaibigan. I kept wondering why you remained a Castro and not a Villareal."

      Natawa siya. "Chismis reporter ka na ba ngayon? My life is not exciting anymore. Try looking for other leads."

       Hindi sumagot si Paul. Tahimik lang na inisang lagok ang alak gaya niya.

      Abala si Gabbie sa pag-aayos ng mga ginamit niyang equipment sa therapy center nang bigla siyang tawagin ni Ma'am Cheng.

      "May bisita ka Gabbie," anang may katabaang babae. "Pinaghintay ko na lang sa pantry natin."

       "Sige po, Ma'am," aniya bago nagmadaling naghugas ng kamay at nagtungo sa pantry. Natigilan pa siya nang mapagsino ang bisita niya. Si Penny, tahimik na nakaupo sa harap ng bakanteng lamesa at upuan.

      Napalunok siya. Anong ginagawa nito roon?

      Bumaling ito sa kanya nang maramdaman ang kanyang presensiya. Maingat itong tumayo. "Gabbie, right?" anito. "Hi, I'm Penny. Phoenix's fiancee."

      Pinakalma niya ang sarili. "Bakit ka nandito?"

       Tipid na ngumiti si Penny, may halong pagmamaldita. Umandar tuloy ang pagiging pintasera niya. Hindi naman pala ito kagandahan sa malapitan. Makinis lang, malaki ang hinaharap at magaling manamit.

      "I'd go straight to the point, stop seeing Phoenix. Ikakasal na kami at buntis na ako sa magiging anak namin. Out of respect for yourself, stop having an affair with a soon to be married man!" dire-diretsong banat ni Penny, nakataas ang noo habang nakahawak sa umbok ng tiyan nito.

       Hindi maganda ang dating sa kanya ng mga sinabi ng babae. Pero nagpakatimpi-timpi siya dahil buntis ang kaharap niya.

      "Ikaw na ang nagsabi, ikakasal na kayo. So, bakit damay pa rin ako?"

      "I know you spent the whole day of yesterday with him. I also know that you slept with him the other night!" Tumaas na ang boses nito, kumuyom na rin ang mga palad.

      Ngumiti siya, sarkastiko. "Maganda 'yan, updated ka. I wonder who's your source? Sinabi ba ng source mo kung nakailan kami? Sinabi rin ba ng source mo kung saan-saang parte kami ng penthouse nag-sex? Gusto mo sabihin ko sa 'yo? Magku-kuwento ako."

      Nanlaki ang mata ng babae, lalong namula ang mukha. "Bitch!" sigaw nito bago mabilis na lumapit sa kanya at tinangka siyang sampalin.

      Mabilis niyang sinalag ang kamay nito at hinawakan ito sa palapulsuhan. "Gabbie ang pangalan ko. Do not call me by any other name kung ayaw mong tawagin kitang, kiri, mang-aagaw, haliparot, at manggagamit!"

      "How dare you─"

      "Yes! I dare!" ganting sigaw niya. "Dahil ako ang inagawan mo! Ako ang nagparaya para magkaroon ng tatay 'yang anak mo! Tapos ako ang aawayin mo? Ang kapal din nang mukha mo! Kasing kapal ng concealer mo!"

      Ipiniksi ni Penny ang kamay nitong hawak niya bago umatras ng ilang hakbang. Marahas ang pagtaas-baba ng dibdib nito. Matatalas ang matang nakatingin sa kanya.

      Muli siyang nagsalita. "Bakit, natatakot ka na baka iwan ka ni Phoenix at bumalik siya sa akin? P'wes, habambuhay kang matakot! Dahil pakasalan ka man ni Phoenix, may isang katotohanan na hindi mo mababago. Mahal ako ni Phoenix. Ikaw?"

      Tumalikod na siya. Hindi na niya kayang magtimpi pa. Subalit, nakakailang hakbang pa lamang siya nang muli itong sumigaw.

      "Whore!"

      Umalingawngaw 'yon sa kahabaan ng hall patungo sa pantry. Mabuti na lamang wala nang mga pasyente. Sila-sila na lang ng mga kasamahan niya na naghahandang umuwi. Kuyom ang kamay niyang muli itong hinarap. "Para sabihin ko sa 'yo, kahit ipaeksamen mo pa ko sa lahat ng OB-Gyne sa Pilipinas, virgin pa ko.
