Chapter Eleven:
The limo slows to a stop on the curb in front of my apartment block. I look out the window to see Karla standing there patiently, grinning at the limo. I chuckle lightly at her preppy expression and turn to find Charlie watching me closely.
"Thanks for the ride," I smile softly at him, leaning forward to peck his cheek, "See you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow, love," he grins affectionately, giving my hand a squeeze before slipping out the car before me.
He stands beside the car, holding the door open for me to slip out. As I go to stand, he holds out his hand, looking the epitome of a gentleman. I laugh and shake my head, grinning at his chivalry and place my smaller hand in his, allowing him to gently pull me to my feet.
Karla winks suggestively at me as Charlie releases me, stepping forward to take my elbow and guide me to the lobby. Charlie comes up behind me, having unfolded the stupid wheelchair and is pushing it towards me. I want to burn the stupid thing, but I know I need it.
I huff out a big sigh and roll my eyes skyward, then settle down on the wheelchair. I fold my arms and pout like a wayward toddler would after being scolded. Not a very mature look on a twenty-one year old. Karla just grins at me and takes the handles from Charlie.
As I'm being pushed away, I turn in my seat, wanting one last look at the father of my child before tomorrow. Wow, never thought I'd say that. Or well, think it. Charlie is standing by the limo, his arms crossed and when he catches my eye, he sends a flirty wink at me. I roll my eyes and wiggle my fingers at a smirking James peaking out the open door of the limo.
Karla pushes me towards the elevator, smiling knowingly at me. Maybe I can use this to my advantage and milk every moment for my gain. An evil smirk oozes across my lips and I recline back in the chair, waiting for the elevator to descend. My new slave pushes me through the awaiting doors, my tummy suddenly making itself known by producing loud squelches of protest. No judging, my ingesting organ is weird.
The sudden thought of salty crackers, sardines and avocado bring a certain appeal to new as I feel the slow ascension of the metal we're in. Okay metal box just sounds creepy... and suffocating. Okay... I need to get out now.
"Lala," I grin sardonically, using my special nickname for Karla as I turn to look at her.
"Yes?" she narrows her eyes at me, knowing my game, "What do you want, Kenzie?"
"Oh, nothing," I say innocently, "I was just wondering if you could whip up some salty sardine crackers and guacamole."
She stares horrified at me, disgust filling her eyes, along side deep amusement.
"Why on earth would you want that!?" she chuckles disbelieving at me, "You hate sardines."
"What's wrong with trying new things, you never know until you try it," I look down, feeling weird about my food choice. I blame the pregnancy.
"It's the baby isn't it?" she suddenly smirks at me and I feel my cheeks tinge red.
"So?" I accuse, frowning at Karla, "What's wrong with that. It's called pregnancy cravings for a reason."
The elevator dings and the doors slide open, revealing the short corridor and two doors of our floor. Karla wheels me out and down the corridor to our door, pausing to fish her set of keys out her purse.
"Fine," she relents, slipping the key into the lock and twisting, "Go to your room, while I make your snack."
I grin triumphantly at her, standing shakily up from the damned wheelchair and shuffling my way up the stairs to my room. I plop down heavily on my queen size bed, glad to finally be back home.
I can't wait for tomorrow, I get to finally see my little one.
***
I'm jolted awake, literally as a smaller body bounces onto my bed beside me. I groan and pull my pillow over my head, trying to shut out the world and go back to sleep.
"Wakey wakey!" a voice says shrilly and I grunt in reply.
"Fuck," I sigh, snuggling deeper into my pillow, "Off."
I hear an indignant huff, then someone's hands on my shoulders, shaking me. I growl at the person and swing my hand at them, hearing the satisfying sound of my hand making contact with their face. I hear a yelp, followed by a thud next to my bed.
"Okay, Kenny," the blankets are ripped off me, throw cold air attacking me, causing me to shiver, "Now is not the time to be a bitch. You're gonna miss your appointment."
I frown, what appointment, I don't have an appoi-
"Crap!" I shoot upright in my bed, a wave of vertigo making me nauseous for a moment, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I did," Charlotte deadpans, "It's not my fault you're not a morning person."
I pull a face at my sister and swing my legs off my precious bed and onto the chilled floorboards. I stand unsteadily, but I'm not feeling as weak as I was the day before. Guess the meds are doing their job, it seems.
"Still," I argue, walking over to my closet, "You could have done a better job at waking me up."
"Well, I'm sorry, Sleeping Beauty," she rolls her eyes, making herself comfortable on my bed, "I did try and you slapped me, you cow!"
I snigger and look at her over my shoulder, taking in her red cheek, my hand print visible on her scowling face. I laugh at her expression, turning back around to pick out a white, flowy floor length skirt and a light blue crop top. If I'm going to be getting bigger, I might as well wear all the clothes I won't be able to in a month or two.
I place the outfit I've chosen on the foot of my bed, before continuing into my en suit for a refreshing shower. After stripping and bringing the temperature to my liking, I wash my body in my lavender and honey body wash. I love the scent it leaves on my skin. I quickly shave as well, then scrub my hair with shampoo and conditioner.
Once I'm finished, I step out and dry off with my fluffy towel and open the bathroom door, releasing the steam into the bedroom. I find that Charlotte made herself scarce, so quickly change, and blow dry my wet blonde hair. I choose a pair of Roman sandals and add a few bracelets to my wrist, then apply minimum makeup.
Satisfied, I exit the room and make my way down stairs. I hear voices coming from behind the kitchen door as I reach the last step. Frowning in curiosity, I push open the door, finding Charlotte eating cereal, Karla reading the latest gossip magazine and a male back facing me.
"Morning Sunshine," Karla says brightly and I scowl at her.
The man turns to see who's at the door and I recognize Charlie's smirking face. I'm surprised for a second, before remembering that he and his brother we're picking us up for the appointment. I smile shyly at him and sashay over to him, pecking his lips and giving a quick hug.
"Feeling better?" his deep voice questions, as I reach up in the cupboard for my medication.
"Yup," I grin, filling a cup with water and downing my four prescription pills, "I don't feel as weak as yesterday, must be the pills."
"Good," he smiles genuinely, "Ready to go?"
"Yeah," I turn to Charlotte and Karla, "You guys coming or not?"
"Of course we are," Lottie smirks at me, "I wanna meet my future niece or nephew."
"Ditto," Karla agrees, beaming at me.
I shake my head at them and turn back to Charlie, "My mom says she'll meet us there, so we can leave now."
"You look beautiful, by the way," he whispers softly into my hair as he presses a gentle kiss to my forehead.
I blush and mumble a small 'thank you' as we head down to the lobby. I notice a missing face and turn look question Charlie, but he answers before I even have the chance to open my mouth.
"Jem is in the car," he mumbles, casting a sly side glance at me as we enter the lobby.
"Jem?"
"James' nickname," he smiles at my confused pout, dipping his head to place a chaste kiss on my lips, before pulling back and grinning at my surprise.
I'm pulled away from him before I can get in a retort and squished against someone's chest, "Hey sista-in-law," a boyish voice greets with enthusiasm.
"Hi, James," I wheeze, "Can you let me go, I do like to breath."
"Whoops sorry," he says, releasing me from his crushing embrace.
"It's fine," I shrug, noncommittally, "At least I'm awake properly now."
"Right," he winks at me.
***
"Okay, Miss MacArthur," the nurse orders, pointing to a raised dentist looking chair, "Take a seat and the doctor will be with you shortly."
I nod and hand my purse to my mother and take a seat. Karla, James and Charlotte sit on chairs on the side of the room, while my mother and Charlie stand beside me eagerly. Actually, Charlie looks a little pale and nervous, so I reach out and clutch his hand, squeezing it comfortingly.
The Doctor sweeps in, "Hello, Miss MacArthur, I'm Dr. Dora Ling."
The spindly woman is tall and young, looking about thirty. She's definitely pretty with her dark hair and dark Asian eyes. She walks over and clasps my hand in her, shaking it professionally.
"Kenzie," I nod at her.
"You must be the father," she smiles shaking Charlie's hand.
"Charlie," he mumbles, still looking rather pale.
"Okay, I'm going to need you to change into this, behind that screen," she points behind me at the dark screen in the corner of the room.
I nod softly, excited about this and take the blue gown from her and go behind the screen. I undress quickly and come out, taking my place back in the leather padded chair.
"Good," she smiles at me, "Now I need you to spread your legs and, place your feet on these."
She indicates two padded cushions on either side of the chair, raised. I frown at her, but do as I'm told. She then turns to grab a weird dongle and slipping a condom onto the dildo shaped device. She pulls on a pair of gloves and coats the device in a clear goo. My frown deepens as I watch her.
"Where's that going?" I ask warily.
She turns and smiles knowingly at my expression, "Its too early to do an ultrasound over the stomach, so we need to stick this up your vagina, it's the only way to check the health of your child at this point."
I'm gaping at her, as I'm sure everybody else is doing also. I mean, what the Hell, she want to stick that thing in me, talk about awkward.
"Oh, God," I hear Charlie gasp, causing me to gulp and grab for his hand, gripping it tightly.
"Stop complaining," I hiss at him, "You're not the one about to be probed."
Something cold touches my entrance, causing me to yelp at it's frigid temperature. Dr. Ling pushes the cold device in further and I almost whimper in discomfort at the pain of the unfamiliar device entering me. Soft lips kiss my forehead, soothing me. Once it's in the entire way, she pulls back and switches a few things on.
"Okay, everyone, if you could direct you attention towards the screen, you can see the heart beat of the baby."
Everyone gasps and leans closer, I watch in fascination as I see a faint twitching on the screen. My baby. I almost tear up at the sight and I have no idea why. Fricking hormones. Charlie looks at me with watery eyes, a look of pure joy on his handsome face. He quickly pecks my lips, before going back to staring at the screen adoringly.
"Hang on," Dr. Ling whispers, frowning at the screen, "What the-?"
I glance at her, worried something is wrong with my child, the rest are oblivious, all staring and murmuring excitedly about the baby.
"What's wrong?" I choke, feeling scared all of a sudden.
"Nothing, it's just that," she suddenly grins, turning to beam at me, "There are two more heart beats than expected."
"Whats that supposed to mean," Charlie pipes up, gripping my hand tightly.
"You're having triplets!"
