Chapter 16

I'm not sure what's going on with wattpad, but each time I've tried to upload a chapter it's come out like the following two paragraphs, so I when I copy and paste it from a word document I now need to go in and edit every paragraph to make sure it's not like the following. Is anyone else having this problem????

Braedon and Nicolas had come to their feet towards the tail end of Jacob’s rant. They’d realised Jacob was upset, angry even, but for him to threaten to leave his home as well… that, they hadn’t seen coming.

The brother’s glanced at each other before retaking their seats; neither quite knowing what to say and for several moments sat silently considering Jacob’s words. It was Nicolas that finally spoke. “We’ve made a bloody mess of this whole situation haven’t we?â€

Braedon and Nicolas had come to their feet towards the tail end of Jacob's rant. They'd realised Jacob was upset, angry even, but for him to threaten to leave his home was well... that, they hadn't seen that coming.

The brother's glanced at each other before retaking their seats; neither quite knowing what to say and for several moments sat silently considering Jacob's words. It was Nicolas that finally spoke. "We've made a bloody mess of this whole situation, haven't we?"

Braedon laughed and not in a good way. "It would seem we are excelling at stupidity of late." He ran a hand over his chin rubbing it in frustration, "We need to do better Nick. That we've caused so much hurt to our own sister... he shook his head.

"I agree Brae and I hate to be the practical one and as bloody minded as some might believe it to be..." He got to his feet began pacing the area in front of the desk.

Braedon waited knowing his brother would come to his point in his own time.

Nicolas walked back to his seat, sitting down again before speaking. "The loss to the Pack if Jaz does leave will be great." He sighed, looked his brother in the eye. "If Jaz decides to go, we both know she won't be leaving alone and now; with the three children she's gained there will be a loss of ten Pack members, eleven if we include Jacob."

Braedon leaned forward in his chair resting his elbows on his desk. "That's a huge loss to any Pack. It would also send a message to other Alphas, that perhaps I am no longer as in control of my Pack as I should be." He sighed releasing a low growl of frustration.

"Jaz is our sister, our blood. We've done enough damage to her without causing anymore." Braedon sighed. "I do not want to lose her, as I'm certain you don't. All these years we've kept her here under the premise of keeping her safe." He shook his head leaning back in his chair as he closed his eyes.

"We've been selfish Nick and it's time to make amends. We need to let Jaz know that we are on her side. That she can count on us. The children; she will no doubt believe we'll try to take them from her."

"Yes," Nicolas nodded. "I can't say as I blame her given how we've treated her in the past."

"Then we prove her wrong. Show our sister that she can count on us. She's family, they too are now our family. It's about time we started acting like one."

"And it's about bloody time too!" Jacob burst into the room, a huge grin on his face. "I had no doubt that you would come through. Now don't you think it's time you spoke to your sister before welcoming our newest members into the Pack? I'll speak to Gilbert. I'm certain there's a party in order to welcome everyone home."

At that Jacob turned  leaving the brothers once again in stunned silence. The brothers looked at each other all seriousness before bursting out laughing. "Come Nick let's see if we can make amends with our mates before we speak to Jaz."

They didn't have to go too far, finding both Kasey and Chrissy in the dining room sipping tea. They looked up when the men came into the room. For a moment no one spoke and just before the Alpha did, Kasey shook her head. "We have something we need to share with you."

Both men could see the seriousness in their faces, knew they weren't going to like what they had to say, but sat by their mates to listen to what they had to say.

It was Chrissy that spoke next. "Jaz doesn't know that we're telling you this, but considering all that's happened, we believe you need to know everything before you speak to her."

Chrissy paused considering her words or perhaps reconsidering if they should even say anything. Taking a deep breath then releasing it she began again. "You both know that sometimes I see things. You know like when I saw that Cade and Cord were coming." They nodded.

She glanced at Kasey, "Well the connection between Kasey and Jaz and me is a lot stronger now. I mean we've been making a real effort to get closer...¦ you know and..." she turned to Kasey not knowing how to say the rest.

Kasey gave her nod, "For whatever reason, we were able to connect in what we believed to be a dream Jaz was having; a nightmare really. Brae it was more than a nightmare, it was a premonition."

Both men knew better than to discard what these women were saying, "What exactly was in this premonition Kitten?" Braedon took his mate's hand holding it gently.

A tear escaped Chrissy's eye and Nicolas had hold of her letting her know that whatever the premonition was, she was safe. "Go on Kasey, she's fine."

"To be honest it made no real sense, but it didn't have to. It was god awful Brae. There was blood everywhere and ripped flesh and I could smell it as if I were actually there. I could sense pain and then..." Kasey couldn't help the sob and the tears that came then, but the warmth that her mate surrounded her with helped steady her.

"Brae, there was so much blood and pain and then I heard a baby cry." She shook her head as if trying to rid herself of the image then looked up into her mate's eyes. "When we spoke with Jaz about it she told us she thought she heard others, I mean more besides the baby crying."

"Why didn't you say something before now?"

"Because we had no idea if or when it might even happen." Cried Chrissy.

"Shh my love," Nicolas rubbed a hand up and down her back to calm her.

"When we heard about the children," Chrissy continued. "We were freaking out. We wanted to know what happened and you shut us out. You wouldn't tell us anything."

"Chrissy it all happened so fast, there was no time to tell or discuss anything for that matter. But we know now." Braedon looked at each person at the table before he spoke again. "It would seem that this was meant to be. Jaz was meant to meet this family and she was destined to have these children." He couldn't help but smile. "It would seem our family is ever growing."

"How about we all go visit Jaz and welcome our new niece and nephews to the family? I'm fairly certain Gilbert will have a few treats we can take with us to tempt them."

At that moment Gilbert came into the dining room carrying a box in one hand and a bag in the other, a knowing smile on his face. "I believe you wanted a few treats and perhaps an afternoon tea cake?"

"You're a good man Gilbert!" Brae took the box and Kasey the bag, before they knew it they were stepping out onto the front porch.

"What if the children aren't there? If I were Jaz waiting for you and Nicolas I wouldn't want them close by."

"Your right Kitten. First we speak to Jaz, allay her fears then she can call her cubs back to her." he shook his head. "It will take some time to get used to saying that." He couldn't help but laugh. "As long as she's happy though, right Nick?"

"Yes, as long as she's happy."

"One moment," Gilbert disappeared back into the house, returning moments later with yet another box. "Cupcakes." He remarked, "or the little ones."

The Alpha smiled, giving him a nod then they stepped off the porch, making their way towards Jaz's home.

As they approached Jaz's home they weren't surprised to see Eli standing on the front porch waiting for them. He did however look surprised to see that Braedon and Nicolas had brought their mates with them as well as Gilbert.

He gave a nod of his head in respect to his Alpha, "Everyone's waiting for you." He raised a brow at the box in Braedon's hands, "You brought cake?"

Braedon did his best not to laugh at the confusion on the man's face. "Come Eli, let's get this over with."

They made their way inside finding everyone in the kitchen, sombre expressions on each of the faces. No one spoke. Riley breaking the silence with a cheerful gurgling sound that brought everyone back to life.

Both women moved forward wanting to meet the baby, Gilbert headed for the kitchen bench taking the box from Braedon's hand as he moved. "I'll put on a pot of coffee and make some tea."

Emma followed after him, "I'll give you a hand." She looked over her shoulder a smile creeping onto her face as she saw that perhaps this meeting wasn't going to be as disastrous as everyone had believed it would be.

Braedon moved towards his sister as did Nicolas. He cleared his throat, "As Pack Alpha I'm pulling rank." There was dead silence as everyone turned to him.

They were surprised to see a huge grin on his face. "I get to nurse my new nephew first." He reached out to Riley and the child all but jumped into his arms.

Jaz was fairly gobsmacked at her brothers change of heart. There were words, questions she wanted to ask, as she opened her mouth to speak there were no words... they wouldn't come. Realising there was no need at that moment, Jaz let it go taking in the smile on Braedon's face and the calmness in his eyes. This was real not some ploy or plan to make her stay. At least she hoped.

After Riley was handed around and eventually ended back in Braedon's arms it was Cade that finally broke the illusion of 'happy family'.

"What gives Braedon? I mean we all expected you to come in here and lay down the law." Cade paused unsure if she should go on, then turning to her mother, "Mum you're too emotional to say it and I don't really care what he says about me."

Braedon nodded towards the living room, "Why don't we get comfortable while we talk." Once they were seated, Braedon still holding Riley, he turned to his sister. "Let Cade have her say. I believe she's earned that right."

Jaz no sooner nodded than Cade spoke up. "I believe I speak for all of us when I ask you what the hell's going on. We all know you didn't want Jaz to have a life let alone have kids!"

Both Braedon and Nicolas had the good manners to wince at her words. They cut too close to the truth of how they had treated their sister.

"Look, I know you weren't happy about your sisters' connection with these children and now that they are Were's..." she sighed.

"Cad..." Braedon paused to look at each and every person in the room. "Nicolas and I have had a great deal to think about concerning your mother and how we treated her so long ago. And how we have been treating her and expecting her to..." he sighed, "how we have been expecting her to fall in line with what was expected of her all these years.'For the good of the Pack' I believe is the mantra we stated."

Braedon ran a hand over Riley's hair, ran the back of it over his cheek while everyone waited for his next words. Braedon needed calm and the child in his arms was thankfully bringing that. "We were wrong Jaz. Dead wrong and I am so very sorry."

Braedon came to his feet moving towards his sister and knelt in front her placing Riley in her lap. "If only this could be your first son. I will take that blame with me to my grave sister and it is I that am at fault. I am the Pack Alpha. The blame stops with me."

Braedon looked up at his sister, "I am so very sorry for everything Jaz. I'd ask that you forgive me, but I don't know if I can even forgive myself. I do promise you this. Your children all five will always be part of our family whether they carry the Romanoff name or not."

As Braedon moved to stand Jaz reached for him pulling him into a hug. There were no words. There was no need for them. A moment later Nicolas was crouched beside them.

Jaz could feel him there and glanced up, "What he said. Me too!" he said and Jaz burst out laughing pulling him into the hug as well.

Somewhere in the midst of their entanglement of a hug Riley grizzled making them laugh. "I'm thinking it's my turn to hold him," declared Nicolas as they pulled back from each other. That's when Kasey and Chrissy started in about Aunts needing access and finally in the middle of everyone trying to decide who should hold him Jacob snatched him up. He tossed him in the air making the child laugh and bringing the room to a stunned silence.

"What? He likes it. And Riley giggled as if on cue, then. "Fine," stated Jacob, reluctantly. "ll give him up, if Gilbert has something to tempt me with?"

Minutes later a baby blanket was spread on the carpet for Riley to roll around on. He was surrounded by Aunts, Uncles and those that would be considered extended family. The child had no idea of the significance of what had happened that afternoon, all he knew was that he was loved.

"The children," began Nicolas, "they are legally yours?"

"Yes. Their father saw to it just in case. I think he realised he may not  survive and wanted to make sure his family were taken care of. Once he realised what I was and saw the connection I has with the children I believe he thought I was his best option. The children were drawn to me, immediately trusted me. That in itself told him I could be trusted to care for them. Especially given that Riley was different."

"He knew?" asked Kasey.

Jaz shrugged, "He suspected. You saw first-hand what Chrissy's pregnancy was like. Can you imagine what it would have been like for someone with no idea what was going on? It would have been terrifying for them both at the end."

"Do they have other family?"

"If you mean will people come looking for them, Brae, then no." She sighed,  "I have all the legal documents regarding my guardianship and also all the properties and monies he had. They have all been signed over to me in trust for the children. Once the children have settled in I'd like to have their belongings brought here. Having their own things will help. I'd also like them to be able to remember their parents as well."

"That can be arranged," replied Nicolas. "We can discuss who you'd like to pack up their belongings another time."

Jaz smiled, relieved that her brothers were receptive to her wishes. "I haven't had time to look over the documents yet, so I have no idea what's involved... I mean Matt said there was land as well as some money for the children."

"Jacob can help you with that. He can go through the will and explain things for you. But Jaz, whatever is there will be for the children's future. The Pack can take care of their needs until then."

"Brae, the children are mine. If anyone is to see to their needs it will be me."

"Of course Jaz. I didn't mean to... he sighed. I'm doing it again, aren't I?" he shook his head. "Please just punch him in the arm or poke me in the ribs or something whenever I start..." Jaz laughed, lightening the moment.

"Your trying Brae, you're really trying," she gave him a hug truly meaning it for the first time in almost forever.

Braedon pulled back, "The other two children, bring them home Jaz, we have cup-cakes and we'd all like the opportunity to get to know them a little more."

Jaz smiled again, "They'll be here in a few minutes. They're good kids Brae, a little scared about what's happened, but they trust me and I've told them both all about the Compound and those closest to me. They're both eager to have Aunts and Uncles as well and more brothers and sisters."

"Jaz," Kasey began. "Do Liam and Kody know what's happened to them?"

"Yes. They also knew that Riley was different and were protective of him. What I did to them helped them understand better what he is."

"And?"

Jaz laughed, "They think it's cool! They're stronger now and can protect each other more easily. I'm thinking they were thinking they are more along the line of superheroes." She shook her head. "I didn't say anything to change that line of thought, not just yet."

There were smiles all around, "Heroes." Jacob grinned. :That's got to be a first!" he laughed, "I like it!"

Gilbert and Emma brought the cup-cakes in, placing them on the coffee table along with four glasses of milk. Moments later footsteps could be heard coming from the front porch. "Mummy, mummy, we rode on a horse!" cried Kody before coming to a stop upon seeing so many people in the living room. "Umm," her eyes moved from one person to the next.

"Did you ride all by yourself, or with your brother?" Asked Nicolas.

Her smile returned, "Yep -  umm, my myself ..." she turned to glance at Taylor and Leith, "we had help. Then we got to brush the horses and feed them too!"

"How about you and Liam go wash your hands, I'm pretty sure there might be a cup-cake with your name on it."

"Okay," Kody grabbed Liam, dragging him towards to nearest bathroom. She turned her head and grinned realising that Taylor and Leith were following them.

"Yeah, yeah, we want cup-cakes too." Stated Taylor, hurrying them along. They would, Jaz realised, make sure they both washed their hands and faces properly.

It wasn't at all long before Kody, Liam, Taylor and Leith were seated on the floor with cake and milk. Riley making it known that he wanted some as well. Cade took a cup-cake from the table, sat with the guys pulling Riley into her lap and proceeded to feed her now baby brother pieces of cake.

Jaz glanced around the room spotting Phia standing in the doorway. She patted the space beside her letting her know to come join them. Once more she took in the room, glancing at each person there. Every one of them was dear to her. Family. They were all here. All here except one. One that would... could never be part of her family any longer.

Jaz closed her eyes, taking a deep quiet breath as she sent out a silent prayer to her son. I love you. I always will, please don't ever forget that. And know that no matter what no one can ever replace you. My heart may seem as if full, but there will always be a part of me that is yours.

Jaz opened her eyes, saw her family with fresh eyes; eyes no longer full of loss and longing, but of hope and love. For the first time since she was a child Jaz wanted to look towards her future with hope, something she had experienced precious little of since the loss of her child.

There was still muchto talk about, the move to Emma's house and settling in. All changes, for the future, a future she had never dreamt of. So for now... one day at a time. And if she needed to poke a certain Alpha in the ribs, then so be it.
