Chapter 5 - Panic Attack

"You are never setting foot in my kitchen again! And don't even dream of trying to cook something before the age of twenty-five." Ezekiel scolded us, pinching the bridge of his nose.

The five of us sat at the dining room table, being lectured by the twins. My triplets and I on one side while and my eldest brothers are sitting in front of us. Their arms crossed over their chests, and a deep scowl prominent on their faces. Overall they look outright intimidating, especially since they are very muscled from all their workouts. They could probably snap me in half without breaking a sweat, but I know it would never come to that. I hope... Right now, seeing the look on their faces, I'm not so sure.

To say they were mad when they caught up to us would be an understatement. We didn't get too far either, seeing as they had much longer legs and are extremely fit. We had just reached the garden's gate when I was thrown over Evan's shoulder, and the boys were dragged into the house by their ears.

If an outsider were to come in now, they would see three kids with their heads down and very guilty faces, looking like a bunch of puppies being scolded for chewing the carpet. Opposite them, they would notice the one's doing the scolding, mad and frustrated, not only because of what the little troublemakers had done but also because they weren't enjoying seeing the expression on their youngest siblings' faces. It was especially hard for Evan, the momma bear of the family, that just wanted to smother them and tell them everything would be okay.

I feel so terrible. All I wanted was to surprise them. To see them smile after a day full of work. But instead, I made their day worse by almost poisoned them. The guilt and sadness are eating me alive. I can tell the same goes for my siblings, as I see the broken-hearted look on Luca's face. As Ez pauses his lecture to breathe, Levi takes the opportunity to speak up, making annoyance bubble inside of me.

"It can't be that hard. We just have to follow a recipe." He deadpans mocking my voice and looking at me. I narrow my eyes at him.

"I'm not the one who used talcum powder as sugar," I tell him, my voice bitter. Hearing my words, Luc rubs his neck with an apologetic look on his face.

"Yeah, but you are the one who used the moldy milk" he spits back at me. I shoot daggers at him with my eyes. How dare he pin this all on me?!

"Okay, that's enough!" Ezekiel successfully interrupts our bickering "All of you are responsible. Levi misplaced the milk, Luna used it, and I still don't know how, but Luca confused the sugar with talcum powder. It was a joined effort." he says, taking turns in looking each of us in the eye. Levi and I instantly shut up, the sadness creeping back in again like a frigid blanket.

"We know you didn't mean for this to happen and your intentions were good at heart, so that is why we are not punishing you. But as Ez said, there is no way you are allowed to even make toast. With your luck, you might just burn the house down" Evan said softly, mumbling the last part under his breath.

I giggle slightly at the last part and just like that, our mood was instantly lifted, knowing they weren't mad at us anymore. As we jump out of our chairs, Ez puts a hand up to stop us before speaking.

"On one condition. I know this is your triplets day, but we want to watch the movie marathon with you, as a family. Alexander and River are also joining us." he said with a gentle smile, looking at us with his eyebrows raised, waiting for an answer.

The three of us look at each other, having a silent conversation with our eyes. After a few seconds, beaming smiles make their way onto our faces and we run to hug our brothers as definite 'yes'.

They let out deep chuckles as we come barreling at them, forming a little group hug. Evan is the first to speak up when we detach ourselves from them.

"Ok guys! Go upstairs and change out of those dirty clothes while we order some food for dinner. How does pizza sound?" he questions.

We all nod our heads simultaneously before making our way upstairs to get changed. Luckily, I didn't get dirty beside my clothes, so I didn't need to take a shower. As I get to my room, I quickly strip and put my dirty things in the hamper before taking out fresh ones and putting them on. My outfit is very homey and comfortable, consisting of a pair of soft cotton shorts and Alex's oversized hoodie that I stole a few days ago. I am also wearing some fuzzy socks while my hair falls down my back in loose waves.

I hurry back down to see that all of my brothers are already spread around the couches. On one, lays Luca, his head on Levi's lap. Opposite them are Ev and Ez, both slouched back with their feet propped on the coffee table. I make my way to the last place available, in between Alexander and River, and plop down, my head on Xander's lap and feet on Riv's.

"Is that my hoodie?" Alex asks me, his eyebrows furrowed.

"It's mine now!" I tell him with a toothy grin and, in return, receiving an unamused scowl. He sighs and runs a hand through his hair in annoyance before looking back at me.

"You can't keep stealing my clothes! That's the third one this week!" he complains, sending me a glare.

"But Lex! They are so big and comfy! Besides, they smell like you..." I explain, mumbling the last part, slightly embarrassed. My violet eyes twinkle as I look up at him, trying to convey how much I love wearing his clothes.

"Not the puppy dog eyes..." He groans, defeated.

"Don't worry bro. It's not only your clothes she 'borrows' " Ez pipes in, playfully winking at me. I send him a mock glare, trying to hide a smile that is desperately trying to escape.

It is true though. Half of my wardrobe is occupied by my brothers' clothes, mostly hoodies. Wearing them makes me feel so protected and their familiar smell is so calming. Besides, who doesn't like wearing soft and comfortable oversized clothes?

"Alright! What movie shall we watch?" my thoughts are interrupted by River.

"What about 365 days?" Alex questions with a smirk. I have never heard of it but the name sounds interesting.

"NO!!" All of my brothers scream at the same time, making me nearly jump out of my skin.

"What's that?" I ask tilting my head to the side to see them better, looking like a confused puppy.

"Nothing Lu. Just some movie that isn't really appropriate" Levi answers in a soft voice.

"Have you watched it?" I question him further, trying to get more information.

"Well... yes?" he answers, his response sounding more like a question. At the same time, he is fidgeting in his seat, clearly uncomfortable. But why?

"Then why can't I?" I ask again, furrowing my eyebrows, and slight frown forms on my face. If he has watched it, that means I can too since we are the same age.

"No way! Your eyes are way too innocent to even look at the movie cover" His eyes snap back to me, determination all over them. That is when I realize why they didn't want me to watch it.

Knowing what he is talking about now, I scrunch my nose in disgust "Eww" I say with disgust evident in my voice.

"Keep thinking like that and it will make my job easier" Ez mumbles under his breath.

"Why don't we watch Into the Storm? I haven't actually seen it before, but it isn't a horror movie." Levi suggests, looking at me.

"I'm in!" I say quickly, afraid they'll change their minds about the movie genre.

"Let's get this party started!" Luca holers while putting the movie on Netflix, making us all chuckle at his enthusiasm.

~~~
We have been watching the movie for a while now. The pizza was delivered about half an hour ago. I took two slices and nibbled on them while the boys finished off the rest within minutes. That's what you get for living in a house full of boys.
Even though the movie wasn't scary, I was starting to regret my decision. I would rather watch 10 horror movie over this. This was like my own personal nightmare. A costume made film that feeds off my fears and insecurities, transforming them into suffering. Instead of jump scares and eerie music, this movie is about cyclones and tropical storms. And everyone knows that inside these, there is a force of nature that no one can reckon with: the lightning, my biggest fear.
The boys are enjoying it, so I am trying my best to cope, not wanting to ruin the last evening before school starts up again. As Alex gently runs his fingers through my hair, I can tell he has caught on to what's going on.
"It's just a movie." He whispers to me in a voice so soft that I can barely recognize it as his own. And that's what I keep telling myself as the movie went on. But the more I watch, the more anxious and fidgety I get. The rest of my brothers have noticed my restless state by now, and are looking at me with concern etched on their faces. They kept asking if I wanted to change it but I turned them down every time.
The car being struck by lightning was my breaking point. Just like that, I'm sucked back into my memories. The ones I try so desperately to forget.
I can't feel anything but the buzz of electricity on my skin. It is so painful that hell seems like heaven right now. But life is a backstabbing bitch, and when you think it can't get worse, it surprises you. Worse than the physical pain that I was currently feeling, was the heartbreak I felt by taking in the view in front of me.
My parents. They lay there, in the front seats. Their eyes open, fear clear in them. Through the fog that threatens to settle over my young mind, I can see their bodies covered in blood. I see a branch from the tree we crashed into lodged into my mommy's chest and my daddy's neck at a weird angle. They aren't moving, nor blinking, and just like that, the suffering increases tenfold. My parents are dead and it's all my fault.
I feel like I am fading in and out of consciousness, silent tears running down my face, not having enough energy left to cry out. My surroundings are starting to look like a big blur, and being too tired to hang on, I let them. I give up.
Suddenly, I'm back in my living room, struggling to breathe. Still in the same position as I was before, my hand now rests against Alex's chest, my heartbeat and breathing slowly meeting his. My body is shaking and the waterworks make their way out of my eyes with no mercy.
"Shhh... calm down Luna, you're safe." Xander's worried voice reaches my ears as the ringing fades "That's it. Keep going, princess, just breathe..." I do as he says and my breathing starts to come back to normal.
As I have managed to slow down to mere hiccups and sniffles, Ezekiel speaks up "How are you doing, baby?" he asks in a concerned, but comforting voice. Somehow, I gather enough energy to muster a small 'okay', even though I am far from that.
"What do you say we call it a day, hmm?" Evan suggests kindly. I furiously shake my head no, causing it to pound a little and making me wince. I push it aside, knowing it is probably from those seconds with lack of oxygen.
"What if you stay with me tonight? I'll even cuddle with you..." Xander offers and I nod my head yes. Even though his personality is the coldest and he is the least touchy out of all my brothers, his cuddles are great.
He gets up from the couch with me in his arms, carrying me bridal style. My eyes feel heavy but I managed to keep them open for a few more seconds, wanting to see my triplets that, no doubt, are worried sick. As I lay eyes on them, I smile. A silent reassuring that I am alright. Call it telepathy or whatever you want, but with us, sometimes words aren't needed to convey our feelings.
Alex makes his way upstairs with me and pushes the door open with his foot, gently pulling the covers of the bed and putting me down gently. He then strips out of his shirt, only left with shorts, and gets in beside me so that my back is facing his chest. He wraps a protective arm around me, bringing me further into his comforting embrace. I snuggle deeper in his arms, sleep slowly creeping in.
"Thank you, Lex..." I thank him in a fleeting whisper. For everything he ever did. For being there for me. For having my back.
"Good night Lu..." His deep, smooth voice says, lulling me further into sleep. And that is what I do. I welcome the fog with open arms, waiting for it to take away all my problems.
