Chapter 4 - The 'cake'

"No way! You cheated!" Levi shouts at me from the other side of the coffee table. He has just landed on my most expensive property and doesn't have enough money to pay, so he is refusing to, claiming that I cheated. Well... Technically I did, but he doesn't need to know that.

"So what if I did? What are you gonna do about it?" I tease him with a smirk dancing on my lips, one eyebrow raised. I can tell I am doing a good job at riling him up by how red his face is. I can just imagine the smoke coming out of his years, and by the sound of booming laughter coming from the living room door, I'm not the only one. There, standing with his arms holding his stomach and laughing his ass off, for the second time today, is River.

"Your face...so red...tomato...smoke...ears!!!" River struggles to get out in between breaths while pointing his finger at Levi. If looks could kill, Riv would be 6 feet under right now. His glare was so intense that you could practically see the lasers shooting from his eyes. Luca, our nicest brother, is holding in his laughter, doing a much better job than the two of us.

From the corner of my eye, I can see my oldest triplet clench his jaw, trying hard not to lash out. The vein on his neck is ticking and his fists are closed so hard that his knuckles are turning white. A sign that he is containing his fury. Barely. My laugh dies down as a slight fear creeps in. Though sweet and caring to his family, Levi has a very short temper and will punch the closest thing if driven over the edge.

Sensing the same thing as me, Luca stands up and slowly walks over, hands in front of him in a sign of surrender "Lee... step away from the board..." he says in a soft voice, and using his childhood nickname, as if he were talking to a ferocious animal that was about to bite his head off. Well, it wasn't that far from the truth... He did look like he was gonna do something like that.

Levi turns around, directing his glare at us before he takes in the slight scared and panicked expression on our faces, and his eyes immediately soften.

"I'm sorry Lee... I didn't mean to make you that mad. I just wanted to tease you..." I say in a small voice, head hung low. I walk over to him and carefully take his big hand in mine, gently unclasping his fingers from its fist position. As he opens his mouth to answer me, an annoying voice speaks up, making me facepalm.

"I'm not! It's always so fun to rile you up!" River says with a smirk. Hearing this, Levi's scowl returns, and before anyone can blink, he throws a hotel from the game at our older brother, hitting bull's eye. Right in the middle of his forehead.

"Ow! What the hell?!" He exclaims, shooting a scowl at a smug Levi "If this leaves a mark, you are so dead." he threatens, turning around to leave. On his way out, I can just make out some profanities leaving his mouth, which I would rather not repeat.

"Language!" I yell at his retreating figure, adding wood to the fire. As a response, he flips me the bird before rounding the corner and disappearing from view.

"How about we forget about the game and start baking the cake? Evan's shift is over in an hour, and Ezekiel is out grocery shopping, then he will pick him up and come home." Luca speaks up. I nod in agreement and kneel down to start tidying up the game. As we clear the small table, I notice Levi still has a scowl on his face. I mentally wince, remembering it's my fault.

"Are you mad at me?" I ask cautiously, looking through my lashes, afraid of the answer. He runs a hand through his hair in frustration, making me bite my lip to prevent a tear from rolling down my cheek.

I hate when my brothers are mad at me, especially my triplets. They are the only thing that keeps me going sometimes, and every time I even think about them being mad at me, a gut-wrenching knot forms in my stomach. The worst of all is when you can see the disappointment in their eyes. They will give you the silent treatment, only saying the bare minimum. It makes me feel so exposed. Like my shield was stolen from me, and I am defenseless against the mean words, sharp as a sword, that are thrown at me by others.

As Luca closes the box of the game, Lev makes a motion with his hands for me to come closer to him on the sofa. When I am within his reach, he gently grabs my wrist and pulls me onto his lap sideways so that I can face him. Sighing, he makes sure I'm looking into his purple eyes before speaking in a soft, calming tone.

"I'm not mad, princess. I know you just wanted to have some fun, and being truthful I would have done the same to you" He says with a teasing smirk "I'm sorry too. I have to work more on my temper..."

Letting out a sigh of relief, I lunge at him, my arms wrapping around his middle and my face nuzzling into his neck. I inhale his familiar, comforting scent, mumbling a 'thank you'.

"What about me? I want a hug!" I giggle slightly at Luc's babyish voice and I don't even have to look to see that he has an adorable pout on his lips.

"Come here, you big baby..." I say, opening my arms for him

"You are one to talk..." Levi winks at me teasingly, and I scowl, fighting off a smile. Not wasting another second, our middle triplet throws himself at us, making us all tumble from the sofa to the floor. The landing didn't hurt, seeing as Levi cushioned my fall. On the other hand, Luc's weight was smashing my windpipe.

"Get off, you hippopotamus!" I wheeze, trying to breathe. Under me Lev groans and grumbles under his breath.

"Ups..." Luc says getting up and smiling sheepishly at us "Now, how about we bake that cake?"

~~~
Evan and Ezekiel just got home and went upstairs to change out of their work clothes before tasting some of the cake we baked. They were very happy and impressed we didn't burn the house down. We finished the cake just in time. It is a little more toasted than anticipated, but nothing too major. Who even knew an oven had those many buttons!
I was broken out of my trance by our oldest brothers' footsteps making their way down the stairs. My two youngest brothers and I quickly cut out the cake and put two pieces on separate plates, leaving them on the dining room table.
We then made our way to the kitchen to clean up all the mess we had created. Somehow, there was batter on the wall, and ingredients spilled all over the countertops. To our luck, we didn't need to wash up any dishes or cutlery, as it was technically still part of Alexander's grounding.
As I am putting all the ingredients back in their places, I come across a half-full bottle of talcum powder, the one used on babies.
"Hey, Luc? Do you know what this is doing here?" I ask him with a questioning look on my face, one eyebrow raised. He turns around, and recognition flashes in his eyes.
"Oh yeah! We were out of normal sugar, so I used that powdered one instead." As the words leave his mouth, I almost choke on my own spit. I look at him as if he had grown a second head and am about to scold him when Levi speaks up.
"Luna? What milk did you use?" he asks wearily as he holds up a full carton of milk. I look at him weirdly before answering.
"The one that was on top of the counter..." This time he did choke on his own spit before being able to compose himself and speak again.
"That milk was in the fridge for over a month! I put it there 'cause it had gone bad! There was mold forming and it stinks! How did you not notice that?!" He whisper yells.
As reality dawned on us on what we had done, we looked at each other like dears caught in headlights. But it was too late. Two booming voices roar, and before they can catch up to us, we are out the door and running for our lives.
"Levi! Luca! Luna! Come back here, you rascals!!"
