Chapter 2 - The voice of reason

(This is a Lichtenberg figure. Imagine it on her stomach)

The sunlight peeked through my closed blinds and aimed at the bed where I was laying, the fog slowly lifting off my mind. Waking up, my brain starts to process the two furnaces hugging me protectively to them.

When all sleep has left me, I start recalling the memories of last night. The nightmare.

No.

Memory. This wasn't a random nightmare. It wasn't one of those you get from watching horror movies. It was very much real. It happened seven years ago and to this day it haunts me. I have been getting them ever since that fateful day. I was told by multiple therapists that they would get better with time, and they were. Or at least that is what we thought... I hadn't had any nightmares in a week nor had I woken everyone up with screaming in almost a month.

But life has it out for me. It doesn't want me to forget that night. It's almost as if it knows it was my fault. If I hadn't gotten sick from playing outside for too long, we wouldn't have gone to the hospital and the crash would have never happened. It was my fault and it seems like this is life's way of punishing me. Making me re-live that scenario over and over again. Feeling all the pain, helplessness, and heartbreak of that fateful night.

I was broken out of my trance by a hand running through my hair in a soothing motion. As I lift my head to look up, Luca is already awake. His purple eyes, similar to mine, looking down at me with what I could only guess curiosity.

"What are you thinking about Lu?" he softly whispers in the silence of the room.

I look into his eyes and understanding crosses over his features. "Baby you know it wasn't your fault. Please don't blame yourself..." he said with sadness evident in his voice.

Unable to keep eye contact any longer I turn my head down and start to fiddle with Levi's fingers that are still wrapped around my waist as if I was a stuffed bear. I hear Luc sigh and I feel his large hand on top of my small one.

"If you continue to think it was your fault then Levi and I are also to blame. We were the ones who kept you out too long to play. You said you were cold but we insisted we play one more game. So if you want to pledge someone guilty, it's us" he said softly but determined.

"I could never blame you guys... " I mumbled

With that we fell into a comfortable silence, enjoying each other's presence. Within a few minutes, the peace was broken by me as I felt my bladder tighten. "Hey, Luc?" I asked.

"Mmmh?" he mumbles, his eyes closed and his hand still running through my hair.

"I gotta pee..." I whisper. As soon as the words left my mouth I heard his low chuckle. He untangled himself from me and gave me some space so I could get up and go to the toilet. As I tried lifting myself from the bed, I felt something weighing me down. I look down and I see that a sleeping Levi still has a tight grip on me.

I try to loosen it by pushing, pulling, stretching, and even trying to pry his hands off me. All to no avail. His arm is like quicksand. The more I move the more he tightens his grip. I let out a huff in frustration and turn around so that I am facing my oldest triplet.

"Levii..." I whine quietly, afraid to disrupt the silence in the air.

"Stop moving so much..." he teasingly mumbles under his breath. Behind me, I can sense Luca trying to hold in his laugh, not doing a very good job at it.

"Leev... I. Gotta. Pee" I whine again, knowing he is now awake, poking him on the cheek with every word.

I look at his face to see him peaking open an eye at me before the other one follows, amusement swimming in them. As his purple orbs take in my flustered state, I notice the small smile playing on his lips, knowing he is having fun on my account.

"Luc help me!" I pleaded with puppy dog eyes, turning my head so that he can see my face.

With a grin on his face, he shakes his head, defeated, before looking at our brother. Both of them look at each other as if having a silent agreement before Luc speaks "We will let you go on one condition..."

"We'll have a triplets day" Levi says looking at me with a giant smile. As I hear his words, the discomfort of my full bladder is long forgotten and excitement takes over it.

Triplets' day is the best! It is a day where only the three of us hang out. Sometimes we go out and have ice cream, go to the movies or even go horseriding! We live in Harrogate, a small town in the North of England, so some days it's slightly rainy. In those cases, we stay at home, watch movies, and play games, just enjoying being together.

Hearing this I get up and start squealing and jumping, not having my brother's arm weighing me down anymore. They laugh at my enthusiasm as they too sit up in bed.

I look at the time seeing that it is already 11 a.m. "Come on guys let's go!" I push them out of my room so that the three of us can get ready for a day of pure fun.

Once they are out the door, I shut it and make a b-line to my ensuite bathroom. I do my business, wash my hands, and decide to have a quick shower. As I am stripping out of my shirt, the corner of my eye catches the Lichtenberg figure. The image in itself looks like a thunderstorm. A permanent reminder of my phobia imprinted on my skin.

I take in the rest of my appearance. With a 5 foot and 4 inches height, I am by far the shortest of my family. They all stand above 6 feet while my triplets reach around 5 foot 9 inches. Just like them, I have dirty blonde hair that falls down my back in waves and violet-colored eyes.

It is a very uncommon eye color and it is only seen when there is a genetic mutation. While my triplets' eyes are more of a dark purple, mine is a bright violet that even the most colorful flowers would be jealous of.

Snapping out of my train of thought and looking away from the mirror, I get into the shower. I coat my hair in my lavender shampoo and wait a while so it leaves its nice smell. I quickly finish washing and get out.

I wrap a towel around my hair and another around my body as I go back into my room and put some underwear on so I can then get dressed. Once that is done I pull on some comfy sweatpants and Levi's hoodie that smells like him. It has started to rain so I know we will do the triplets day at home, where it is nice and warm.

I then let my long hair out of the towel and head to the bathroom so I can brush it. As I look at myself in the mirror I almost have a heart attack.

"Ahhh!" I scream at the top of my lungs. "Riveer!" On cue, I hear a stampede of elephants, sorry, my brothers, barging into my room.

"Luna! Where are you? What's wrong?!" I hear Ezekiel's voice calling from my room. I come out and when he sees me his eyes relax, but when we take in my appearance, he purses his lips, trying not to laugh at my state.

"Baby, I love the new look but don't you think it's a bit much?" teases a voice to my right. I look in the direction only to come to face with my third oldest brother. The 18-year old troublemaker looks at me with a smirk, laughter swimming in his eyes.

As I'm about to give him a piece of my mind, two booming laughs come from my other side. On the floor is River, the culprit, rolling around on the floor hysterically, while the other one is no one but Levi, holding his stomach and wheezing from laughing so much.

Luca, apparently the only nice brother I have, comes up to me and gives me a side hug, with a smile playing on his lips "Not you too Luc..." I whine at him.

"Lulu you gotta admit that it's a little funny" he replies using my childhood nickname.

"Oh my God, this is gold!" River says trying to get his laughter under control, but when he sees my scowl it only increases.

"For you maybe, but what is going to happen tomorrow when school starts up again? !I'll be the laughing stock! They already give me enough trouble as it is because of my eye color and now I have purple hair too!" I shout at him while raising my arms in exasperation.

Xander notices the frustration tears building up in the corners of my eyes and snaps at our two brothers "Cut it out, you dimwits!"

When Levi finally sobered up he looked at me and his eyes instantly softened seeing one lone tear escaping my eyes. I wipe it right away, not wanting the rest of my brothers to think I'I a crybaby.

"I'm sorry Luna" he says sheepishly. I frown and look away from him, annoyed that he didn't defend me as Luca did.

"Oh come on don't be mad... " I still don't respond. He comes up to me, gives me a bear hug, and whispers, pleading "Please forgive me? I won't let anyone make fun of you tomorrow... " I think for a few seconds and then return the hug, silently saying yes.

"You however are grounded" says the voice of reason, also known as Ezekiel, to River. He instantly stops laughing and in a second runs out of the room with Xander on his tail, the latter making sure he doesn't get far. Ezekiel walks behind them to make sure they don't tear the house down, so now it is only me, Luca, and Levi in the room

"What do you say we get this triplet day started?"
