Chapter 11 - Buttons

It's been a few days since my accident in P.E., and it's now Friday. After we found Ezekiel in the kitchen, we convinced him to sit down on the sofa and call Evan before diving into the story. Fortunately, both of them had the day off, so they didn't have to miss work or anything.

At first, they were incredibly concerned. My oldest brother demanded that Evan, being a doctor, examined me himself, and only when he was sure there was nothing wrong with me did they relax. After that was done and over with, they called the school and demanded that they fired the responsible teacher.

To say that they were mad was an understatement. The only difference between the twins' fury and Alex's is that theirs isn't as noticeable. They appear collected, and their faces remain blank, but when you look deep into their eyes, they are burning brighter than the fires of hell with rage.

Fortunately, the school agreed that what coach Mayers did was out of line, especially being aware of my situation, and kicked her out as requested by my brothers as well as apologizing on her behalf.

In the middle of all of this, a very confused and frustrated River came in through the front door and made a b-line for Xander, demanding answers. With the argument going on at school, we ended up forgetting that he was still there. He then proceeded to tell us that when he noticed that the car was gone, he decided to walk. He complained a big deal about it as if a 15-minute walk would kill him.

Luca and Levi made up as well as all of my friends. Everything is like it was before, and that makes me extremely happy. But, for some reason, Roman and Griffin still seem semi-hostile towards each other. I wonder why that is?

"Luna! You're going to be late! Again!" Yelled Ez's voice from downstairs, snapping me out of my thoughts. As I run down the stairs in a hurry, my legs feel brand new, almost as if nothing happened on Monday.

I look down to see the spot where my triplets usually wait for me empty. I frown at this. Maybe they are waiting by the door? I think to myself as I make my way there, only to come back empty-handed, my frown deepening. Where are they?

"Guys, do you know where the L's are?" I yell at my oldest brothers. Evan pokes his head around the corner of the kitchen wall before walking out.

"You were running late, so they went ahead. Xander and Riv are also gone already, and there is no way you are walking alone to school, so hurry up and knock on the Morgan's door. Their car is still in the driveway, so I think they are also late." He says all in one breath, shooing out of the house. "Have a nice day!" He wishes as he pecks my forehead.

I huff in discontentment but take my bag anyway and make my way to the house next door. I walk up the front steps of the porch and make my way inside. It is like a second home to me, a safe haven if you wish. Each of my brothers and I have a key to get in whenever we please, knowing that we are always welcome. Eleonor and Jack gave them to us themselves.

"Morning, sweetheart! What are you still doing here? Shouldn't you be in school?" Eleonor, my second mother, greets me with a smile. I look in the direction where her voice came from, only to see her snuggled on the couch, cuddling into some blankets with a mug of hot tea.

"Good morning!" I greet her. "I should, but I didn't hear my alarm, and now all my brothers have gone already. I was thinking of tagging along with Riley and Roman." I explain to her, walking into the living room and standing next to the couch.

"Hey, mom, have you seen my phone any-" Roman says, entering the living room in a rush, pausing when he sees me " Oh, hey Luna, what's up?" He asks, giving me a quick hug.

I take a look at his disheveled appearance, trying to hide a smile. The top buttons of his shirt are in the wrong holes, making it all scrunched up, and his hair is all over the place, giving a messy look to it.

"Oh, nothing much. I'm tagging along with you guys today, and your phone is in your pocket, by the way. " I say, pointing to his trousers.

He looks down, and his cheeks slightly flush with what I could only guess embarrassment " Thanks. " he mumbles as he sees that I am right.

I walk up to him and start to undo the first few buttons of his shirt, the ones that are messed up " Umm... Lu, what are you doing?" He asks me, his lips slightly parted. I smile up at him, continuing with my work.

"Your top buttons are all in the wrong place, so I'm fixing them." I tell him, and, in return, a slight blush covers his cheeks. Why is he blushing?

When I finish re-doing all of them, I step away from him, admiring my work, while he lets out a shaky breath. He looks at his mom, who, from the corner of my eye, I can see smirking at us. I brush this aside and focus on trying to get to school.

"Riley, hurry up! Even a turtle running through peanut butter is faster than you!" I scream up the stairs at him. Not even a minute later, we can hear the sound of footsteps running down, and a grinning Riley comes up to me and quickly pecks my forehead before moving to the kitchen, no doubt to grab a snack.

"In my defense, turtles are quite fast when they want to!" He cheekily remarks, winking at me when he sees my deadpan look.

"Okay, you lot go to school. You are already going to be late." Elena shoos us, literally pushing the brothers out the door.

Even though Rom was born in the same year as us, he is already 16 and can legally drive, so we get into his car and make our way to school.

The ride is short, and about 5 minutes later, we reach the parking lot and part ways: Riley to Math and Roman and me to Home Ed. We run through the empty hallways until we reach our destination and barge in.

"Glad you could make it on time!" Mr. Williams remarks, sarcasm dripping off his words. He is a young teacher that has started this year and could be easily mistaken by a student being merely 23 years old.

We mumble an apology before scurrying to our seats that were beside each other. I can hear a few loud whispers directed at me and some snickerings in response as we pass our classmates' tables.

"As I was saying, the project for this term will be in pairs. You will have to make some kind of dessert and bring it to class. It will be half of your final grade, so make sure it is edible." He says, giving me a pointed look. Am I that bad at baking? I ask myself. "While you were, God knows where I assigned the partners so you two will be together." He says, pointing at us.

I'm glad I'm working with Rom. He is a great company and my only salvation in this class. Imagine if my partner were Cole, my bully who is currently fiercely glaring at an unbothered Roman, or any of the girls whose faces are greener with envy than a lime. It would be hell.

He looks at me and gives me a comforting smile, one I return before turning my attention back to class and listening to what our teacher is saying.

~~~
"Geez, thanks for waiting for me today!" I say sarcastically at my triplets, who look at me apologetically.
We were now all seated at the lunch table after our morning classes finished about 10 minutes ago.
"Sorry Lu, you were taking a very long time getting ready, and I needed to get something from the library before class started. " Luca tells me, using his own puppy dog eyes for some extra persuasion.
"Fine..." I grumble back, munching on a fry. The canteen food is usually worse, but today it was surprisingly tasty. Or maybe I just think that because my stomach has been grumbling since second period.
"You will never believe what I heard..." Alison says, a smirk forming on her face when her eyes land on me.
"What?" Lottie asks curiously from beside her.
"Home Ed class has to bake something, and it's half of the final grade. " Griff answers, trying to hide a smile. Hearing this, Levi almost chokes on his water before looking at me. He was about to talk when Rom beat him to it.
"Yeah, it's true. It's a paired project, so Lu and I are doing it together. " he says, throwing me one of his charming smiles.
"Maybe this time you won't poison anyone..." Griffin says with a smirk, trying to rile me up. His words click in my mind, and anger starts to bubble within me like a witch's cauldron.
"You told them!?" I yell accusatorily at my triplets sitting across the table, who in response only smile sheepishly at me.
"Easy there, Firecracker, you gotta admit that it was a much too good story to just pass up." Fin chuckles, adding more wood to the fire. Even a blind person could see he's enjoying provoking me.
"Well, at least this time, one of us knows how to bake. Don't worry I'll help you, Luna " he says in a gentle voice, taking my hand in his under the table in a comforting gesture. In response, I grumble under my breath, still annoyed that they thought I would just burn the house down. It's not like last time was all my fault...
"Well," Apollo says, standing up. "this was fun and all, but we need to get to class. The bell is about to ring" Hearing this, we all get up and clear the table of our trays before going our separate ways.
~~~

"Hey, Alex? Can I ride with you today?" I ask as I see him leaning against his car, typing on his phone now that classes have just finished.

"Why?" he asks, lifting one eyebrow in question.

"Luca and Levi got detention. Ez and Ev don't let me walk home alone, so my only option is going with you and Riv." I tell him, flashing a little my puppy dog eyes.

"Fine..." He says sighing "River also got detention, so it's just you and me. Let's go." He says while putting his phone away and opening the door.

We get into the car and make our way home. My brother sloppily parks it in the driveway, and we get out, making our way to the front door. As I am about to open it, I make out the sound of three distinct voices. That's weird. Ezekiel and Evan are the only ones supposed to be home, I think to myself.

"I didn't know we were expecting company... " I state to Xander, who shrugs his shoulders, completely unbothered.

I push the door open just for a beaming grin to take over my face at the sight in front of me, ignoring the sour faces of my oldest brothers.

The one responsible for my instant good mood turns around at the sound of the door opening and smiles back at me. I break out into a sprint and throw myself into his awaiting arms, almost making us come tumbling down, shouting at the top of my lungs.

"Grey!!"
