Chapter 10 - Endless arguing
"So... What do you have to tell me?" Alex questions again, looking up from his phone. When his eyes land on me, he does a double-take and narrows his eyes at Griffin. "Why are you carrying my sister?" He questions in an intimidating voice that had me shrinking into myself.
However, it doesn't seem to affect Fin as he looks at him with a blank face, not even the slightest bit worried.
"Coach Mayers was in a bitchy mood and made her run for the whole class, threatening her with two hours of push-ups if she didn't do so. Halfway through, she couldn't keep going, and her nose started bleeding before she passed out. We took her to the infirmary and are now on our way to your car. Her legs are killing her, so I'm giving her a piggy-back ride." Griffin says bluntly, making my triplets and I facepalm at the same time. He looks unbothered and just shrugs his shoulders in response.
"That was creepy..." Pollo remarks, referring to our simultaneous facepalming.
Meanwhile, Xander is still looking at Fin with an eyebrow raised " I'm not sure if I should like you 'cause you helped my sister, or hate you 'cause you don't even seem intimidated by me." He said, talking more to himself.
I think he only processed now what Griffin told him, judging from his furrowed eyebrows and the concerned look directed at me. He looked me over, making sure there was no sign of injury before finally speaking. "I'm gonna kill that bitch!" He hissed like a venomous serpent, his hands coiling into fists.
I feel Griff's hold on my legs tighten and see his jaw clench. I sense the muscles of his back tensing before he speaks in a deadly tone " I'll gladly help," he says with a murderous look on his face.
I have to admit that seeing him like this is scary. He has always looked intimidating, but with us, it is like he is a different person. Even though he looks grumpy and has a scowl on his face, he is playful and occasionally will crack a smile. This was more than picking up a fight with a random kid. This was his protective instincts keeking in, and although terrifying, I can't stop the warmth that it brings to my heart, knowing that he cares about me so much that he would risk being expelled.
"Okay, calm down. I know that coach was way out of line and must pay the consequences, but we can't just beat her half to death. Xander, you are old enough to go to prison!" Luca says, gesturing frantically and Alex in the end.
"I'm sorry, Luc, but I'm with Alex and Griff on this one" Levi says to his younger brother, who looks pained that his own triplet would choose someone else's side.
"Whoa there. Luca is right violence is never the solution!" Roman quickly cuts in, holding his hands in front of him as if to physically stop that idea.
"Well, she needs to learn her lesson somehow!" Is Griffin's bitter response, venom sipping from his words as he glowers darkly at Rom. What has gotten into these two?
"Guys, I really don't-" I try to interrupt them, but to no avail. They are too engrossed in being at each other's throats to even acknowledge my attempt at speaking.
"She'll press charges!" Luca counteracts, trying to reason with them, but I can tell that he is also getting frustrated. His own brothers being against him is just another drop of water in the now half-full glass.
"Screw the charges!" Xander shouts at him in exasperation, throwing his hands in the air and glaring darkly at both his brother and Roman. Seeing Griffin mad is already pretty scary in itself, but Xander? That's a whole other story.
I feel tears prick the corners of my eyes. My friends are all fighting against each other, and it's all my fault. If my body wasn't so weak, I wouldn't have fainted, and everything would have been fine now... I hide my face in the crook of Griffin's neck so that no one can see my tear-stricken face. He must have sensed the wetness of my eyes on his skin because he stops arguing with them, probably knowing what I'm thinking.
He turns his neck to the side so he can angle his mouth to my year and whispers softly. "I'm sorry Lu, it's just that I am very pissed off with the way she has treated you. Please don't cry..." He asks me in a pleading voice as if it pained him to see me like this.
"You won't be saying that when you're locked up in prison!" Luca yells back at Alex. I can see that he is done with this argument and just wants them to see reason. Is this ever going to end?
"Don't be dramatic!" Levi shoots at our triplet, his words leaving with a scoff. Luca looks over at him, and his exasperated expression turns into one of heartbreak. One even I can feel. How could he speak like that to him? Luc's feelings are hurt easily, and this is the first time Lev has ever directed such a nasty tone at him. He should know better...
"GUYS! Have you even stopped to think about what Luna wants? She was the one who was hurt in all of this! Shouldn't she get to decide?" Riley, my savior, and guardian angel speaks up, effectively silencing all of them with his booming voice and mighty glare, one I had never seen before.
Digesting his words, all their gazes turn to me. I can see regret in most of them when they see my slightly blotchy face from the tears. I try to make myself smaller and awkwardly try to hide behind Griffin's back, who is still holding me up effortlessly.
"I just want to go home..." I mumble, not looking at any of them. I make quick eye contact with Riley and send him a small, grateful smile. I nod my head at him, and he understands my silent command.
"Alright, here's what we are gonna do. Griffin, you are going to continue carrying Luna to the car, and the rest of you are going home. We already had too much excitement for one day. We will bring up what happened with Ezekiel and Evan, and they will deal with it" He finished talking, letting them know there was no room for discussion. No one complained, knowing it was what would make me happy, and we headed outside.
Xander grumpily unlocked the car and opened the back door so that Griff could put me down. Before he could do so, I hugged his neck tight once again and whispered in his ear.
"Thank you" He didn't need me to explain what for. He knew it was for everything. For carrying me, to stop arguing when sensing my sadness, for being willing to protect me at any cost. But above all, for caring.
"You don't have to thank me. I will always be here for you." He whispered in an equally soft voice, sending goosebumps down my neck.
Gently, he lays me down on the backseat before standing up to his full height. In the meantime, my brothers have successfully got in the car and are now patiently waiting for Fin to shut the door so we can be on our way.
He steps back and gets a hold of the door before smirking down at me, amusement swimming in his stormy grey eyes.
"See you tomorrow, Bubbies" He playfully says, making me roll my eyes, but a small smile makes its way to my face. Always with the nicknames, I think to myself while shaking my head.
As soon as the door is closed, Alex speeds off the parking lot and we make our way home. The ride is silent, and you could practically cut the tension in the air with a knife.
Alex is gripping the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles are turning white, and he has a nasty glare on his face, directing it at the poor road. I didn't think he would be so bothered about this, but apparently, I was wrong. I mean it's not like I broke a leg. I just passed out, nothing that hasn't happened before.
Luca and Levi were different though. They wouldn't even look at each other and were behaving as if the other didn't exist. When they thought I wasn't looking, they would sneak glances at me, making sure I was still there and hadn't run for the hills yet. Ironic, really. I can't even walk properly, let alone run.
I take notice of our car entering the driveway of our house, and as soon as it is parked, I get off. At first, I am wobbly on my feet so my triplets come to help me, but I shrug them off, disappointed in them. I limp as fast as I can to the front door, my brothers following close behind in case I fall, their faces looking like lost puppies. I open the door to find Ezekiel at the kitchen bar, drinking a cup of coffee.
As soon as he spots us, his eyebrows lift in surprise " What are you doing home so soon?" and after a small pause, he furrows his eyebrows, looking concerned at me " And why are you walking like your legs were run over by a car?"
Everyone looks away from his intense stare, not wanting to be the ones to deliver the bad news. I take a deep breath and start to organize my thoughts in a way that will lessen the blow.
Here goes nothing...
