The brightly colored leaves crunched under my boots, with slow steps I crept through the forest. my delicate pale fingers wrapped around the handles of my gun finger dropped beside the trigger prepared to shoot at any moment. I kept my head down and stayed low on the practice grounds.
It was yet another training mission, groups of soldiers sent on to the battlefield to hunt each other and the droids. Today was different, we weren't just sent to the practice grounds we woke up there, alone separated from our groups, the mission to regroup and destroy. We'd know our assigned group by our sash color, I didn't care I what color mine was. I was looking for my friends, the ones I trusted not the ones I was assigned to.
Wondering the dense brush a bang echoed close by I dove to the ground rolling in the dry leaves under some shrubs, I stayed down and low waiting. a cloud of orange smoke crept up from the ravine the sent that followed was o rotting flesh and garbage. I gagged using my sash to cover my mouth I watched as boots stumbled down the path.
"Fucking Sunk, I'll get you for this!" One of the voices I recognized to be Bishop shouted.
"He's not worth it man, let's get out of here" The other voice hacked out as the smoke rose.
I watched as the boots ran off, my eyes watering from the stench, rolling out from my hiding spot I turned around going the direction the boys had come from. A smiling forming on my face as I the figure cleared from the smoke. Sitting on a stump casually eating an apple in the midst of the heart of the stench was Dakota Free Code name Skunk.
Dakota was the oldest out of our group of friends, tall and lanky his spider black hair cut short but not buzzed leaving his bangs to hand on his forehead. It looked odd on his square head compared to the long locks we had all grown accustomed to over the years, as I slide down the Ravine towards him, Dakota plump chapped lips smiled at me.
"Good to see your still alive" he teased with a wink as he stood up towering over me.
"Really I 'm the one you're worried about? Me?" I questioned
"You just so tiny and blonde how can I not?" He taunted.
" and yet I've kicked your beanstalk ass every time in the ring, personally I'm more worried about the boys" I informed.
"You mean Aja" Dakota smirked nudging me.
"And Luca, the nurses had him on so many drugs to battle the bug he caught that last I saw him yesterday he was pretty much a vegetable and hallucinating " I defended moving forward.
"Okay, yeah we should find him" Dakota agreed.
Dakota and I stayed close together him behind watching my back as we made our way out the ravine, or movements quick but silents as we hurried through the bush. We did our best not to be seen, not wanting to spill blood if not needed.
Hours had passed as we twisted and turned in the maze of forest, we tried our best to keep track. not get lost but everything the man-made forest looked the same, it was designed that way for just this purpose. To get lost, afraid to let your guard down for stronger members to take you out.
Stumbling around the sound of rushing water caught both Dakota and mines attention. Overly excited Dakota rushed pashed me pushing through the shrubs. I followed quickly before we stood a river of crystal clear water. It was perfect, peaceful something wasn't right.
Looking around I noticed no vegetation coming close to the water, no fish in it no bugs there was no sign of life anywhere close to it. Dakota climbed his way down the slight cliff of rock and mud as my eyes scanned around. Then I saw them, the footprints in the mud leading away from the river.
Holding onto my gun I moved closer carefully stepping, it wasn't till I was practically standing onto of it that I saw the regulation boot sticking out of the shrubs. with the barrel of my gun, I pushed them aside, my heart dropped. I could feel my stomach turning at the sight in front of me, vomit threating to creep up.
Covered in the muck was one of our own, a young soldier one of many who I didn't know, her name tag read Murphy, her hair a gold as the suns rays her skin as pale as the first snow. Her body lay limp and lifeless, her cantine slightly displaced out of her hand, her throat still melting away from the inside out as blood and melted tissue bubbled out.
"Dakota NO!" I screamed turning quickly on my heels of my boots.
My voice was echoed by one not my own, as Imena came diving out of the bush. She slid down the slight bank tackling Dakota to the side smushing him into the dark sludge. Imena already petite body looked even smaller as she pinned Dakota to the ground.
Her Maine of fluffy crimpy cloud like ink black locks sat proudly on her head. Her sable black eyes narrowed at Dakota a serious look on her diamond shaped face, her tawny brown skin seemed to reflect flecks of gold from the sun rays bouncing off the river.
"Ow," Dakota grumbled from underneath Imena.
"The water is poised" she warned as I walked over.
"Of course it is" Dakota grumbled gently pushing her off.
" Have you see Luca or Aja?" I questioned tucking my gun behind me and reaching out a hand to help her.
"Seen, no. But I passed a group a little while back, looked pretty rough. I heard them say something about "scorpion" and headed the way they came, that's when I ran into you two" Imena informed as I pulled her up the bank.
"We gotta find them" Dakota added scrambling up behind her.
"This way, cmon" Imena directed as we followed insult.
The three of us didn't wander to much father before we heard it, the sound of gunfire mixed with screams. We followed the sound only to be run into by a group of mixed soldiers, girls and boys there sash's different colors, bruised and bloodied their guns still smoking as the uninjured carried the wounded. There was fear and panic in their eyes as they scrambled away from the cave opening.
A knot formed in the pit of my stomach, a mixture of panic and worry growing inside me, my lip quivering I tugged at it with my teeth. I looked behind me at Imena and Dakota. Both slowly getting up. Watching as the group of soldiers hobbled away fear growing in both their eyes.
I looked back at the open of the cave, the deep green vines growing over the top of the entrance. Something about it much different than the rest of the forest. Another blast of gunfire rang out from inside the cave.
I looked back over my shoulder causing my light sandy blonde hair to flick back over my shoulder. I shared a solemn glance with my two friends, I knew they had the same feeling growing in the pit of their stomachs. Without warning, I bolted for the entrance of the cave.
"Alaska no!" They both called out to me, but I didn't stop.
My mind was racing as I ran through the dimly lit labyrinth of tunnels, this new place was so strange, nothing was the same, it was like a real piece of nature forgot and left behind, untouched by men. I followed the echoes of grunts and crumbling rock, a turning once more an orange light flickered at the end of a tunnel.
I could see the shadows of two boys as they fought tossing each other around the opening. I didn't think, I just ran towards them but before I got to the opening I was tackled to the ground. I felt the air leave my chest as It hit the cold hard stone of the cave floor.
