Kai's POV
It was time.
The face-off.
It was time... for our weekly face-off.
Our training days go by slow every time, it is surprising. I remember barely being able to hold a gun in my hands... but now... here I am... going against the team.
I reach for my only source of firearm in our equipment room, luckily pulling my favorite. My PSS Silent Pistol. I'm one to become attached to the things that matter, especially when it comes to my weapons. Once I took hold of my pistol, I was sure to load its rightful bullets in its cartridge, counting quite a few since our team has grown over the years.
It's amazing how many of us there are now. Our Boss thought the same thing too. Huh... maybe that is why time goes by fast? The more people there are, the more time it takes to have a winner?
"Kai," my thoughts were interfered by a voice. I tilt my head up, slowly, having a faint idea of who's voice it could be. "Kennedy?" His natural tan skin was recognizable at first glance. Kennedy shifted his eyes towards my hands after looking into my eyes. Knowing him, when something is bothering him, he stares at a certain place, that place being my gun. It was obvious he wanted to say something about it.
"Why did you pull a real gun? Did you forget?" He glued his eyes to the pistol in my hand. At first I was concerned what he was lingering on about, but in this insistence it came upon me. I covered one side of my face using my free hand. "Shit, I completely forgot." I let my pulse run wild, I knew my anger would go against me.
That said, I accidentally threw the PSS across our equipment room. I forgot we were using fake guns this time around, I'm an idiot. Of course we would use fake guns; Our Boss wouldn't consider using real ones if it meant our newly-joined members would get wounded.
"Jesus, you didn't need to throw it," Kennedy commented with a huff. "Here, they'll be ready for us soon, so you're lucky I grabbed an extra," he casually handed me a plastic to the touch gun with rubbery bullets already chambered inside the cartridge.
"This looks stupid," after taking a good look at my 'gun', it overall still looked stupid. My salt increased when Kennedy gave me an even more stupid smirk. How stupid. "You're welcome, dear."
"Shut up."
"Oh, yeah, I forgot you only allow your 'misses' to call you that."
"Yes, out of all people you should know this."
"You know she's just using you, right?"
"What's your point?"
Kennedy rolls his eyes. "Uh, I don't know, ever heard of the word 'toxic relationship'?" His voice was sarcastic in my ears, but I did not care. "Patronize me all you want, I love it when she manipulates me," It was almost time for the team to get together, so I tucked my 'firearm' inside my suit, thankfully our suits have pockets.
My black-haired friend was about to say something, but he digressed. "Well, whatever. Don't come crying to me when your feelings are hurt," mimicking my actions, Kennedy also hid his gun, only this time he tucked his gun in his pants.
I pat him on his shoulder, showing no emotions on my facial features. "Don't worry. I won't," I walked out without him beside me. Judging by our members loading up and packing up outside, they were expecting our Boss to call the competition. I was unaware if we were going solo or pairing up into teams, but either way I was ready for the challenge.
Looking around the room, I noticed she was nowhere to be spotted. I wondered suspiciously at that fact. Where the hell is she? I even double checked by scanning person by person, she still was nowhere to be seen.
I let out a sigh. This going to take forever.
I hear someone marching towards us, it is louder than your typical footsteps, it was aggressive against the floor. Only one person I could think of had those footsteps.
"ATTEENNTION!" Just as I figured, our Boss entered the room in a hasty manner, his hands were behind his back and his face was contorted from age. He looks about 40 or 50, I have never acknowledged how old he has grown to be; no one cared for that matter, he is only a leader towards us.
One by one everyone crowded out of the area because our Boss commanded us to go past the hallway, and walk towards the training area. Kennedy eventually walked near me even though everybody was squishing together like a horde of wasps.
Unfortunately, she was absent. Everyone should have been ready by now, she was no exception to the group. I'll admit, I wanted to see her again, I miss seeing her presence. I cannot explain it and I won't, but there is something about her that makes my body react? That is the best way I can put it.
Excitement welled up inside me simply from the thought of her fingers brushing against me. With that in mind, I shook my head, I did not want to be distracted right now. I needed to focus.
The group stopped mid center of the training area, separating into sections across the filled room. There were splotches of people in different directions, we were all waiting for orders from our Boss.
She was still not— ugh. Fine. Let it be like that.
Kennedy stood by my side, resting his arm firmly on my shoulder. I had an odd feeling he was buttering my toast up from touching me, but I ignored that thought, attempting to think about our face-off rules.
Eventually, our Boss curved around the room, dodging people so he could get to the front of the room. It was obvious he was about to give us our rules and orders for today's training. Me and Kennedy gave our full attention to our Boss, hopefully this will help me focus. Hearing our Boss's intimidating screams keeps a crowded room attendant; that's how it works around here.
He pulled out a block of cement to stand on, so he would be taller than the rest of us (I have no idea where he found that). Our Boss shifted around the room with his eyes, scanning if everybody showed up. Yeah 'everybody' is here. Definitely.
After scanning the room, his face contorted into a displeased expression; his eyes brows were creased and his lips had a frown.
"ATTEENNTION!" Hands behind his back once more, the group faced his direction with their eyes glued to his presence, including me and Kennedy. I could only imagine what he was about to say... uh, scream I mean.
"I COUNTED FORTY-NINE BODIES! THERE SHOULD BE FIFTY BODIES!" He was screaming so loud I could see a vein popping out of his forehead.
Terrific. She was most likely the fiftieth member of our group, just as I suspected. Now this continued to worry through me. Admittedly, I am worried something happened to her even though I probably shouldn't be.
It's her. She always found a way around trouble whether it was for bad or... bad. God, I love her.
Kennedy rolled his eyes. I'm sure he knows who is missing too, judging from the way he is looking at my emotionless face.
"Wait, I think I know who is missing!" A person called out in the human pile of forty-nine individuals.
"SPEAK!" Our Boss's eyes darted towards one of our members.
"I saw her earlier! It was—"
"Me."
My eyes widened, but my face stoned together as per usual. No way the timing of that voice was perfectly heard in this room.
I turned my body around, facing the exit of our spacious area, I found someone staring at me. All I could make out was blonde-ness overwhelming my vision, I felt as if I was going to pass out from seeing that hair color.
"Hey, dear~" the blonde's term of endearment short-winded my breathing; I was caught off guard by this beauty of a woman.
"May..."
