Chapter 22 ➺ Paisley
It's been a couple weeks since I brought up the idea of double dating with Harry and Heather. I'm beyond excited about it. We had to plan it for awhile away to make sure all four of us could make it, but it's finally here.
All of us are going bowling tonight. I haven't actually met Heather, but Harry has told me a little bit about her. Apparently they've been texting a lot since he agreed to ask her out again. I can't wait to meet her, though. She seems really nice and will probably be a good influence on her. At least I hope she will.
Will and I have gotten a little bit closer since our first date. We're taking it pretty slow, which I'm grateful for, but at the same time, I still don't feel like I know him as deeply as I should by now. I just don't feel connected to him on a deeper level yet. It all takes time though, I know.
I sat in the car next Will. The two of us were meeting the two of them at the bowling alley. Harry threw a big fit when I suggested bowling, saying it was "lame as hell," but I told him it was the perfect activity because it wasn't really intense and didn't carry too much pressure. He grumbled and told me I overthink this stuff too much. I told him to shut up because he knew I was right. He eventually agreed, so I consider it a win for myself.
We pulled up to the bowling alley just a couple minutes before seven. The parking lot was pretty empty for a Friday night, which was good for us since it wouldn't be that crowded. Will came over and opened my door, helping me out of the car like the gentleman he was.
We walked in and reserved a lane. Harry and Heather hadn't gotten here yet. Will bought me a soda from the food bar, and we just sat around waiting and joking. I should have known Harry wouldn't be on time. He seemed to have his own clock.
About twenty minutes later, I recognized a mop of curly hair walking through the door. I jumped up and signaled over to them. Beside Harry was a tall and slender brunette girl. She was gorgeous. She had a smile on her face as she walked in, however the expression on Harry's face told me he wasn't quite as happy as she appeared to be.
When they made it over to us, I engulfed Harry in a hug. "Hi." I said quietly, only so he could hear.
"Hi." He pulled away from me, "Heather" standing right beside him and Will on my other side.
"Uh, this is Heather." Harry said awkwardly, gesturing towards her. I extended my hand, and she took it smiling and saying hello.
"I'm Paisley, and this is Will." I said, and Will introduced himself to Heather and gave Harry a curt nod. We all exchanged 'nice to meet yous' and got comfortable around each other. We talked for a little while, just getting to know each other.
From what I could tell, Heather seemed nice, but also like a bit of an airhead. She mentioned she was in college, which kind of surprised me because although she had the confidence of a college student, there didn't seem to be much going on in her head. She was cool though, and as long as Harry likes her, that's all that mattered.
"So should we get this game of bowling going?" Will asked, standing up.
"Yeah, for sure." I said.
"Sounds good." Harry said. He went up to the control pad and put all of our names in.
"Should we do teams?" I asked, thinking it could be fun to see who would do better.
"No." Harry said immediately. He was such a fun sucker.
"Why? Are you afraid you'll lose?" I taunted, knowing that if someone challenged him it would get him to want to play.
"No, actually I'm afraid you won't be able to handle the loss." He said smoothly.
"Alright then. Will and I versus you and Heather."
"You're going down." Will said, acting goofy and adorable and competitive.
"We'll see about that." Harry replied, flaunting confidence. We all went up and got our shoes, coming back and putting them back on. Will insisted on tying my laces for me and while doing so, acting like prince charming. I was giggling uncontrollably the whole time because it was so cute. Harry didn't volunteer to do anything like that for Heather, and I could tell by the slight look of hurt on her face that she wished he had.
The two of them hadn't really seemed all that interested in each other. Maybe it was a mistake to push Harry into asking her to come, but I really thought it was a good idea. She could just be nervous too; it is only their second date.
We started the game, and I started off really well. I got eight pins the first time, and then a spare my second time up. Harry was presently bowling and Will went back up to the food bar to get us another soda, so it was just Heather and I sitting on the side.
"So, how long have you and Harry been friends?" She asked.
"Well, just since this last May, actually."
"Oh, wow. I would have thought you guys had known each other much longer." She said, looking surprised and a little weary.
"Well, no. Just a couple months, really."
"Cool." She said, letting silence take over for a minute. However, her quietness didn't last long as she turned to me a couple seconds later. "I don't mean to be rude, but um, what are your scars from?" She asked, dragging her finger over her cheek so as to show what she was referring to. The question took me off guard; she was blunt about it, that's for sure. When I looked over to Harry, he was staring at me with a smoldering look. I could tell he was waiting to see what I would say. Guilt overtook his features and I felt bad for him. The intensity of his gaze left me shocked and speechless. It was only when I brought my eyes back to Heather's that I remembered I had to answer her.
"I was in a car accident." I said. Will was walking back with our drinks just at this moment, and Harry still stood staring at us, bowling ball in hand.
"Oh, well you do a great job of covering the scars up." She said.
"Thanks."
"I never knew you were in an accident." Will said, taking a seat on the bench across from Heather and I.
"Uh, yeah. I'm fine though. I had a punctured lung but it's all healed and now I just have these ugly scars." I said, now feeling slightly insecure that all the attention was on me and uncomfortable since Harry was standing right there, his eyes still locked on me.
"They're not that noticeable." Heather said.
"Well, yeah they are. I hate them, but I can't do anything about it."
"You would be prettier without them." I turned my head to Will, not believing the words as they rolled off his tongue. Silence enfolded us, as tension filled the crowded room. As everyone was going about themselves around us, the four of us just stood there, stuck in the moment of what Will just said.
"You dick." Heather said, looking at Will disbelievingly. And in a flash, Harry was right up to Will, grabbing onto him.
"What the fuck is wrong with you? Why in hell would you think it's okay to say something like that?" Harry yelled, anger clouding his features. I just sat in the couch, watching it all unravel before my eyes.
Will just stared back at Harry, and then to me. "I'm only being honest. All people would be more attractive without scars and deformities." Tension filled the air as everyone was quiet for a minute.
"I guess that makes sense." Heather said quietly from her seat beside me.
"Really?" Harry asked, looking incredulously at her. "You guys are fucking ridiculous. She just said she doesn't like them and you're gonna go and say shit like that?"
"Harry, it's fine. Stop." I said, not wanting this to go any worse than it already had.
"No, Paisley. This is ridiculous." Harry said, turning towards me. "They don't get to talk about you like that." Then he turned to the other two. "You guys are the worst. Do you think she wanted to get in a fucking accident and have all these problems? Do you think that she wanted this to happen to her? She doesn't deserve this and I'm not going to let her hang out with undeserving people like you. You need to learn some fucking manners."
At this point, I had tears running down my cheeks. I don't know what caused them: if it was the fact that the guy I liked, or more was obsessed with, took my biggest insecurity and called me out about it, or for the fact that Harry was standing up for me in the most endearing way ever.
"Paisley, come on." Harry said, walking over to me and putting my arms through the holes in my coat.
"Harry, wait." Heather said, as I grabbed my purse for the floor and we were getting ready to leave.
"What do you want?" Harry asked, exasperated.
"I-I just."
"I don't care. You agreed with him, and you brought all this shit up. I don't really want to hear from you again." Harry said sternly and then hooked his arm in mine and started heading straight for the door.
I sniffled a few times, quickly wiping the tears that had leaked out of my eyes with the sleeve of my jacket. Will looked as if he was shocked, and I couldn't blame him. This night had turned around quickly, almost too fast, it seemed. And in that short amount of time, everything that the two of us might have been working towards, was lost.
"C'mon, Paisley. Let's get you home." When we made it to the doors, the dark of the night swallowed us. The wind was blowing, sending a cold shiver down my spine. Harry's car was parked in the side lot, and he briskly led me to it, not saying anything. When we got there, he opened the door for me and helped me in, as I was still a mess from what happened inside.
He walked around to his side of the car and started it, pulling out of the parking lot and onto the highway. Even though it seemed we were driving away from our problems, what we were actually doing was quite the opposite.
