Chapter 21 ➺ Harry

It is Saturday night and I've got nothing to do. My mother and father are out of town-no surprise there. Although, it's not like they'd really be here even if they were sitting in the next room.

I don't like to just sit home alone, but I have no one really to invite over. Paisley is on her date with Will.

Fuck.

I don't like the idea of it, to be fair. Just thinking about them on a date together makes me want to gag. It's sad really, because deep down I know why it bothers me so much, but I'm not willing to admit it to myself. At least not yet.

I pull out my phone and text Louis. I might as well go hang out with my friends. I haven't seen them in a while anyway.

I get a response about 16 minutes later saying that Luke was having people over. I told him I'd be there and went up to shower and get dressed.

I didn't plan on doing anything stupid tonight, but it was better than just sitting at home pouting over Paisley.

The clock read 7:03 as I walked out the door and into the car. The party should be in full swing by the time I get there. Hopefully, I can just see my friends and then get out of there without getting involved in any shit.

Twenty minutes later, I was walking into Luke's house. It seemed fairly quiet considering the kind of parties Luke usually hosted. The you-have-to-park-2-miles-away kind. There were people in the kitchen, but the majority of everyone was in the back. I saw the warm glow of fire through the window. Since I didn't see my normal group anywhere, I assumed they were outside. I said hello to a few people inside and then popped the collar on my jacket, heading outside.

There were more people out here than there were inside. I walked over to the fire, Louis spotting me before anyone else.

"Mate! You made it." He said, walking over to me.

"Yeah." I said.

"Where have you been lately, dude?" Liam asked. God, did they have to fucking grill me right as I arrived?

"I've been kind of busy, I dunno." I said.

"Well, we're glad you're here." Carrie said, hanging all over Liam. The chatter around me resumed as everybody continued their conversations they paused when I walked up. Niall was right next to me, a pretty brunette girl on his other side.

"I never see you anymore." Niall said, playfully elbowing my arm.

"I know." I said.

"You always seem to be with Paisley these days." Niall said. And his tone wasn't jealous or mean-spirited, on the contrary it seemed like he was happy for me. But his comment sparked something inside of me that caused the total opposite reaction than what I was feeling.

"What? No I don't."

"Shut up. Yes you do and we both know it."

"No you shut the fuck up, Niall. You have no idea what you're talking about. Her and I are just friends." I snapped. Niall put his hands up.

"Sorry, geez, take a breath, bro. I didn't say anything like that." Niall said exasperated, and that's when I realized I really flipped shit on him for no real reason. He turned away from me and to his other side talking to the brunette girl I didn't know.

She was pretty. She had long, brown hair and a narrow face, berry colored lips that formed into a smile when Niall said something to her. I wonder if Niall and her had a thing. I perked my ears up to try to hear bits of their conversation, and from what I heard, it wasn't anything too personal. I had a feeling they were just being friendly.

I feel so stupid standing here with a group of my friends, not talking to anybody. This was ridiculous. How did I become so isolated from all of them in such a short amount of time? All because of Paisley, I suppose. I'd probably rather be with her right now, but she was on a date. The thought hit a nerve, and for a minute I thought about just leaving because I wasn't having any fun and my thoughts were all over the place, a jumbled mess in my brain.

"Oh, this is Harry." The sound of my name brought me back to earth. It was Niall's annoyed voice, but when I turned to look at him, it was the brunette lady's eyes mine met with. "Harry this is Heather." I could tell he was still mad at me, but this Heather girl must have asked who I was.

"Nice to meet you, Harry." She said. Her voice was silky smooth, the confidence in her voice admirable.

"You too." I said.

"I just moved here. Next door, actually. I met Luke the other day and he asked me if I'd like to come over. "

"Cool. Where'd you move from?" I asked politely.

"New York. I was going to school at NYU, but transferred to University of Denver last week. NYU just wasn't the right fit for me." I was a little surprised at her words. She was in college? And was at a high school party? I'm not in college yet, but from what I understand, college parties were a lot cooler than these lame-ass parties, so why would she be here?

"You're in college?" I asked. "How old are you?"

"Yeah. I'm 19. I graduated last year."

"Oh, cool. So why aren't you at some college frat party then? Aren't they way cooler than this?" I asked, curious as to what her answer would be.

"Oh, do you not want me here, Harry?" She teased in a flirty tone.

"I never said that. I was just wondering is all."

"Well in that case, I don't know. Luke asked me to come and he seemed pretty cool and said it would be a pretty good time so, yeah. And besides that, I haven't exactly gotten to know anone at DU yet." The way she was speaking to me made it pretty clear she was flirting. She would look at me with her big brown eyes and then would flutter her eyelashes, her berry colored lips forming into a sexy smile. Honestly, it gave me a bit of a confidence boost, knowing she was interested in me.

"And..." I asked. "What do you think so far?"

"I think the night has significantly improved since I started talking to you." She said boldly. Something stirred inside me and I realized I was quite enjoying this little banter between us.

"Really now?"

"Absolutely." She smirked. I could practically feel the tension between us, the attention she was giving me a happy distraction from my mixed feelings about Paisley. We continued talking for a little while, everyone around us letting us be.

As the night flashed by, Heather and I started being even more flirtatious with each other. For her, I'm sure it was because the amount of alcohol she was consuming was increasing, but for me it was just because I liked the idea of her. I liked the idea of her and me better than Will and Paisley.

We were perched on the couch, her sitting next to me, her body so close there was no space between us. Everyone else was engaged in a petty game of truth or dare but the two of us took a pass instead to just sit with each other. It was much later now, probably one or two in the morning, and I knew I had better get going soon.

I slowly stood up, Heather's head shooting up as I did so. "I've got to get going, I think." I said.

"You think?" She asked.

"Yeah."

"Alright." She said. "But, before you leave.." I was confused by her words but then all at once understood what was happening. She stood up and crashed her lips to mine, the warmth of her lips mingling with mine. I was taken off guard, but soon relaxed into the kiss. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't wanted to do it all night, but I hadn't actually thought it would get that far. She pulled away before we really started kissing, a shiny glint in her eye. "Nice to meet you, Harry."

I nodded, still astonished by her utmost confidence. Never had I come in contact with a girl that was so bold.

"Maybe we'll see each other again?" She asked, although, coming from her lips it sounded much more like a statement.

"Yeah." I said, nodding my head. "Give me your phone." She pulled it out and handed it to me and with the quickest of actions, I texted myself from her phone.

"See you around, Harry." She said, walking out of the room, shooting me a smile over her shoulder. I shook my head wondering how the night made such a turn around. Heather had walked through the kitchen and presumably went straight home. I decided I would say goodbye to everyone before leaving, so I went back to where they were all still playing their game.

"I'm leaving guys." I said, nodding to all of them.

"Good to see you man, thanks for coming." Luke said. Everyone else said goodbye and told me they'd see me soon. I grabbed my jacket and headed out to my car.

The ride home was slow, my thoughts consuming me and throwing me into a whirlwind of confusion. Tonight had unexpectedly been a really good night. I left the house feeling shitty and grumpy, but I had a great time talking with Heather and getting to know her. And even though I know I have these weird, scary feelings for someone who has become my best friend, I don't want to face them.

Heather I'm willing to face though. Paisley has Will anyway, and she clearly doesn't feel the same way that I might feel for her.

Once I got home, I shedded my clothes, throwing them in the hamper in the corner, and dove right under the covers.

* * * * * * *

The next Monday, I pulled into Paisley's driveway, cringing at the idea of having to listen about her and Will's date. I don't care that they went, but I really don't want to have to hear about it. Hopefully she's gotten it all out with Hattie already.

I waited a couple minutes, before her head popped out the door, her bag slung over her shoulder. She smiled warmly at me as she walked down the driveway and approached the car.

"Hi Harry." She said, too happily for a Monday morning.

"Hi." I said, backing out and being the journey to school.

"How was your weekend?" She asked, her big blue eyes meeting mine and spreading a certain emotional ache through my body. Why did she make me so goddamn confused all the time?

"It was fine. You?" I struggled getting the 'you' out because I knew what her answer would be. I had a pretty good idea, anyway. And the moment she looked at me and her smile was spread all the way to the end of her cheeks, I knew I was right.

"It was great. Really great." She said. And that's all she said, silence taking over the car. I knew she wanted me to ask about it, and I should, because I'm her friend, and regardless of how I feel about her and "Will," I should be supportive.

"H-How was your date with Will?" I coughed; literally coughed, because I couldn't get the motherfucking words out on my own.

"It went well, really well. We get on really great. It's like we're the same person." She said, happiness lacing her tone, sending a pang of jealousy through my veins.

"That's good." I said, monotonously, and before I could think twice about what I was saying, I spit the words out. "I met someone this weekend."

She turned to me in surprise, and I swear I saw an unknown emotion flash behind those blue eyes I'd come to know so well, but before I could decode it, it was gone, replaced with the spark of happiness they held before.

"Harry, that's great! Where? Who?" She said, turning her entire body to me and questioning me in that annoying way girls do. I took a deep breath, regreting even saying anything in the moment of intense jealousy.

"Uh, her name is Heather. I met her at a party at Luke's on Saturday. That's about it." I said, giving her the least amount of information possible.

"That's cool. So, will you see her again...or what?" She asked, pressing on.

"Maybe, I dunno. We were just talking and stuff, and exchanged numbers."

"Have you been texting her?"

"No."

"Are you going to ask her out again?"

"I don't know." I said, and that shut her up. It was silent for a couple minutes, as the two of us just sat there. That's why it scared the hell out of me when she squealed excitedly.

"Harry! We could double date. Ask her out again and Will and I could go with you." Hell no.

"What? No." I said, not even thinking about it.

"Harry, c'mon. We're such good friends. Don't you think it would be fun and all?" She said, turning towards me. When I looked over to her, I instantly regretted it, because she was pulling the freaking puppy face on me. Her eyes were big, her eyelashing fluttering rapidly, her bottom lip jutted out.

"Are you serioulsy doing the puppy face?" I asked, a chuckle falling off of my lips.

"What are you talking about? No." She said, but all the while a smirk crossed her lips. "So what do you say?"

"No. Absolutely not."

"You're no fun. Will and I will go out by ourselves then. And by the way, nothing is going to ever come out of this thing with "Heather, unless you make a move." She said knowingly. And the more I really thought about it, the better the idea seemed, for a lot of reasons.

First, I would be with Will and Paisley. Even though the idea of them together makes me slightly sick, knowing I could be there and see what there relationship was like might give me some peace of mind. Maybe if I saw that he treats her okay I could rest assured.

Second, I would be with both Heather and Paisley at the same time. It might help me to settle my feelings out if they're both right beside me.

"Alright fine."
