Chapter 18 ➺ Paisley
"So, what she gets stuck out in space? That's the main thing in the movie, right?" Harry asked me as we scooped vanilla ice cream into our bowls.
"I think so. She like gets away from the spaceship or whatever it is." I said, grabbing the whipped cream and spraying it on top of the ice cream.
"Okay, cool." Harry said, smothering his in chocolate syrup.
"Wow, do you want some ice cream with your hot fudge?" I joked.
"What? That's the best part!" He fired back.
"No, caramel is way better than fudge."
"You're wrong." Harry blatantly said.
"Ditto." We both grabbed our bowls and spoons and headed downstairs to start the movie.
Harry put the DVD in and I sat down on the couch, digging into my bowl of ice cream.
"Do you want a blanket? It's kind of chilly down here." Harry asked.
"Sure." I said. He went back further into the basement and came back a couple minutes later, carrying a couple blankets in his arm.
"Here." He said, tossing me the blanket.
"Thanks."
"Okay, let's get this started." Harry took a seat beside me and pressed play as I cuddled up into my blanket and continued to eat my ice cream.
The movie went by really fast, both Harry and I making jokes out of serious scenes.
"I didn't like the ending." I said, watching as the credits rolled.
"No?" Harry questioned.
"No. You never find out what happens to her." I said. "I don't like all this wondering."
"Huh. Well, Paisley, that's real life. You'll always be wondering." Harry said. His voice was much quieter when he said this than it usually was.
"I guess."
"I mean, we never know where we are going to end up or what's going to happen to us." Harry said.
"You're right. But that doesn't mean I have to like not knowing what's going to happen."
"True." Harry said, staring off to space. He was acting way weird.
"Well, I better get going. I'm meeting a study group for AP psychology tomorrow at the library." I said, getting up and folding my blanket.
"Ew." Harry said.
"Yeah. We're meeting at 8:30. We have a test next week, so Will asked a small group of us if we all wanted to study together." I explained. Harry stood next to me, his expression taking a weird change.
"Will set this up?" Harry scoffed.
"Yeah. Is that a problem?" I asked, wondering why he was so concerned about this.
"No." Harry said quickly, straightening up.
"Are you sure? Because you kind of freaked out on me there."
"No. Actually, I'm quite happy for you. You get to go study with your crush." Harry was now teasing. That was a total 360. His mood changes seriously gave me whiplash.
"He is not a crush, Harry. I've only known him for like a week."
"Then why do you get all happy and giddy when you talk about him, huh?" Harry was now smirking to himself.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I lied.
"Alright, Pay. Keep telling yourself that, but we both know you have a soft spot for him."
"Whatever. I'm leaving. Thanks for the movie and ice cream." I said, walking towards the door.
"Have fun at your study date tomorrow." Harry waved as I walked out to my car.
"I will." I yelled back.
That boy was sure confusing.

The next morning, I was up bright and early, on my way to the library.
Okay, so maybe I was lying to Harry when I said I didn't have a crush on Will. But really, who wouldn't have a crush on Will. He's got the perfect shaggy golden hair, chocolate brown eyes, and tan skin. He's so nice and smart and caring and wow, I think I might be in love.
I'm glad he invited me to this study group, so I can spend more time with him. He's just the epitome of perfection.
I parked the car and walked into the library, seeing Will and some of my classmates already seated at a small table. I walked over to them, a wide smile on my face.
"Hi Paisley!" Will said, his eyes sparkling like gems. Gosh, he was cute.
"Hi." I said, saying hello to everyone.
"There's an empty seat right here." Will said, motioning to the one next to the one he was sitting in. He wants me to sit by him.
"Okay, thanks." I said, taking a seat. I pulled my book and notebook out, getting ready to get started.
"We're just waiting on Lily and then we can start." Will said. "How's your weekend been so far?" he asked, making conversation.
"Good. I hung out with my friend Harry last night. You?"
"Kind of boring. I had to work last night, so ehh, that's not really fun. But I'm glad we get to study together." He said, smiling so I could see all of his perfect teeth.
"Me too. Thanks for inviting me." I said.
"Well I wasn't going to leave out the smartest girl in the class." He said, and I swear my heart stopped. My cheeks were probably so pink right now.
"Thanks, but I'm definitely not the smartest."
"You don't give yourself enough credit." He smiled back at me.
"Thanks." I said, trying to not embarrass myself too much.
Soon, the other girl we were waiting on, Lily, arrived, and we got down to studying.
"What are three of Freud's defense mechanisms?" Will asked me.
"Uh, denial, projection, and repression."
"Correct. Great job!" Will said and I swear I was internally screaming at his praise.
"Okay, now name all the anxiety disorders."
"That's a tough one, Paisley. Okay, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Phobias, and...OCD?"
"Yes, perfect. You got them all!" I said.
We continued back and forth, quizzing each other on our notes, and then all came together as a group to go over the essay questions.
After about an hour and a half of intense studying, all of us felt like with a little more studying the night before, we'd be ready to take on the test. I purposely took a long time to pack up my stuff, so I could talk more with Will.
"I think we'll do great on the test." I said, shoving my notebooks into my backpack. Everyone else had already left.
"Me too. I was thinking, since the test is Friday, maybe next weekend we could go out, you know to like celebrate or something." He said. Yes, yes, yes. I'd go anywhere with Will.
"Oh, sure! That would be fun! When were you thinking?"
"Maybe Friday, or Saturday?"
"Saturday would work better for me because Harry and I always have movie nights on Fridays. If that's okay with you."
"Saturday is perfect. Do you have any suggestions of where we could go? You know, since I'm new here and all." Gosh darn, he was just too cute.
"Do you like to hike? I know some great trails that go through the mountains." I suggested.
"Sure. They definitely don't have mountains like this in Florida."
"Yeah, Denver is quite the place." I joked as we walked outside.
"Well, I'll see you at school on Monday." Will said, waving goodbye as he walked to his car.
"Bye. See ya."

"Hattie!" I squealed into the phone. I was sitting in my car in the library parking lot. I just couldn't wait to tell her that Will asked me on a (almost) date. And by almost, I mean it's a date, he just didn't say it was a date.
"What? What is so important that you had to call me at 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning?"
"Okay, first of all it is 10, so you should be up by now. Second of all, I have some very important news, but if you don't want to hear it I can just-" I started to trail off before she cut me off.
"What?"
"I may or may not be going on a hike with a boy next Saturday."
"May or may not? And which boy is in question here?"
"May. And the boy in question is Will." I said, trying to hide the excitement in my voice. But then again, it's Hattie, so what am I trying to conceal? "Hattie, I'm just so excited!" I squealed.
"Calm down, lover. Tell me exactly how this came about." Hattie said. She knew about Will, because of course I called her on the first day of school and told her all about him.
"Okay, so we're in AP Psych together, you know. Well, Will set up a study group thing for this test we have Friday. So, today we were like quizzing each other and stuff and he said we should celebrate the test next weekend. He asked what there was to do around here and so I told him hiking and so we're going. Next Saturday. Together."
"Wow, Paisley! Yay! So, is it a date..or?"
"I mean, what do you think? He never really explicitly stated it as a date, but it's pretty much a date, right?"
"If he tries to kiss you or anything like that, it would be."
"Let's hope he tries to kiss me, then."

Mrs. Coeke was handing back our Psych tests.
"How do you think you did?" Will asked from his desk, which was conveniently right next to mine.
"I think I did okay. But, we'll see." I answered. I was trying to be cool and breezy and nonchalant, but just the fact that he was talking to me had me all jittery. "What about you?"
"I think I did well. The essays were tough, but I felt prepared for them."
"Yeah, me too. It was the multiple choice that tripped me up." I answered. Before Will could respond, Mrs. Coeke set my test upside down on my desk. I picked it up quickly, eager to see what my score was.
A small A- was written in the top right corner. Mrs. Coeke set Will's on his desk next.
"Well?" He questioned.
"A minus." I said, holding the paper up so he could see it.
"Me too!" His looked exactly the same as mine.
"I think we should study together more often." I said, trying to sound flirty but not overly flirty, but all that came out was really just my normal voice.
"For sure."
We went over the test as a class, and I realized the questions I missed were just because I misread the question or was distracted by some other good answer. The whole time I could feel Will's eyes latched onto me, which was very flattering to say the least.
On the way out of the room at the end of the class, Will grabbed me by the shoulder.
"Paisley." I turned around to face him. "So I'll pick you up tomorrow, then?"
"Yeah, sure. That'd be great."
"Okay." Will said, shooting a reassuring smile and content sigh my way. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"See ya."
