Chapter 12 ➺ Paisley

I didn't even make it to my room before Hattie was eagerly waiting for questioning.

"Well?" She said, taking a seat on stool in front of my desk.

"It was okay." I say truthfully. In all honesty, Harry wasn't all that pleasant, but I feel like we made some headway. Or defined what we wanted from each other at least.

"Okay?" She asked.

"I mean, we talked and stuff. I got to know more about him. His parents are always away on business, he doesn't have any siblings. He likes music. I told him a little about me."

"That's good. So are you going to keep doing this?" She asked.

"Yeah, I mean, obviously we both have very different interests, so we can't be like best friends or anything, but we're going to hang out again next week." I explained as Hattie listened patiently. "Oh, and he, uh, offered to drive me to school everyday."

"You're going to let him drive you?" She asked, giving me an incredulous look.

"Yeah, I don't have any better option. Besides, I'm sure he's a great driver, when he's, uh, sober." I said.

"Okay." She looked at me skeptically, silently judging me for agreeing to get rides from the guy who almost killed me.

"So what did you do tonight?" I asked, wanting to change the subject.

"I had an interview for a scholarship." She said, and I suddenly remembered her telling me about it earlier this week.

"How was is?" I asked. The topic of Hattie going off to college was always a touchy one for me, since I could hardly fathom the idea of her leaving me, but I don't want to seem unsupportive.

"It went really well." Her face lit up in excitement. "They said they would give me a call tomorrow. I think this might be the one, Pay." She said, my heart dropping to my stomach at the confirmation that she would, in fact, be leaving me to live with my mother and her aunt by myself.

"And how far is this one?" I asked hesitantly.

"Only three and half hours." She said. "It's south of Denver."

"That's pretty far." I said, no emotion in my voice.

"I mean, yeah. I won't be able to come home every weekend, but at least once a month." She said.

"Yeah." I said, done with this conversation. I don't want to get upset.

"Alright, well I'll leave you to your homework, miss smarty pants." She said, getting up and gesturing to the backpack that lay on the floor. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Hattie." I said, as I shut the door behind her to bury my head in my books.

I stood anxiously by the door, looking through the window, anxiously awaiting Harry's arrival. It's 6:58 and I wanted to make sure I was ready so as to not slow him down, as he is doing me a huge favor.

Part of me is afraid he isn't going to show up. I know he said he would drive me, but he's so unpredictable and you never know which side of Harry you'll see.

I stood there another two minutes contemplating once again whether or not this was a good idea, when I saw the familiar black car pull into the driveway. I grabbed my bag from the floor and swung the door open, walking out into the cool morning air. Locking the door behind me, I walked up to Harry's car and hopped in.

"Good morning." I said.

"Morning." Harry mumbled, sleep laced in his tone. I didn't want to make him angry or annoy him, so I just put my seatbelt on and sat quietly, peering out the window. Mornings clearly weren't his thing.

The silence didn't bother me, but appartantly it bothered Harry, so he reached down and turned the volume of the CD that was playing up, Harry humming the words along quietly. I recognized the song immediately.

"You like Ed Sheeran?" I asked.

"Who doesn't?" Harry asked, smiling over to me. He seemed to be in a better mood than he was two minutes ago. The emotions of that boy.

"Right?" I asked, bravely reaching my hand down to turn the volume up, but it seemed Harry had the same thought, our fingers coming into contact with each other. I pulled away immediately, not wanting to make it awkward.

"We almost had a Twilight moment there." I joked, referring to the awkward scene in the Vampire-Werewolf movie.

"Huh?" Harry asked, confused.

"Ya know, Bella and Edward, Twilight?" I asked.

"I have no idea what you're talking about."

"The movie." I said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. And it was. Had he been living under a rock the last five years?

"Never seen it." Harry admitted.

"Ehh, not missing out on much. I didn't think it was that great. I just couldn't help it with the whole radio thing, though. It was the most awkward scene in the movie." I said, smiling to myself just at the horrible acting of that part. "We'll have to watch it sometime."

"Maybe we could do that next week?" Harry asked.

"Sure." I said, just as we were pulling into the school. I get out and am about to go my seperate ways when Harry's voice stops me. Does he really want to walk with me to the building? My heart flutters at the thought. Not because I like him, but because it shows somewhat that he cares.

"Meet me out here after school." He says and turns to walk away. Oh.

"Have a good day." I say after him. He just nods in response.

"Don't burn the popcorn, Harry." I said sternly, joking from across the kitchen. It's been a week and a half since the first time Harry and I have hung out, and I already feel a lot closer to him. Him driving me to and from school is quick, and quiet in the mornings, be even so, I've gotten to learn a little more about Harry. Not much, since he is so closed off and timid most of the time, but a little. We don't talk in school, and don't see each other much besides our transportation time. Now, we are at his house and going to watch Twilight.

"I think I'm capable of making popcorn." Harry joked, playfully giving a push to my shoulder.

"I don't know." I joked.

Harry pulled the bag of popcorn out of the microwave and dumped the buttery contents into a bowl.

"Taste and see." Harry said, holding the bowl in front of me. I reached my hand in and grabbed one of the popped kernels, throwing it in my mouth. "Well?" Harry smirked.

"I'll give you credit for this. You're pretty good at microwave popcorn." I said smiling. Harry smiled in return, his dimples popping from his cheeks.

"It is pretty good." Harry said, grabbing the bowl and leading me downstairs. "I had plenty of pratice since it was all I ate until I learned how to cook for myself." He said. I never knew what to say when he told me stuff like this. I was devestated for him that his parents weren't around more, but I didn't want to make him more upset by bringing it up more. I don't really think he talks about it much with anyone, not even his friends.

So, I stayed silent. I put the DVD in the player and took a seat next to Harry.

"Why again are we watching this shit?" Harry asked, stuffing some popcorn in his mouth.

"Because you've never seen it." I said.

"But you said it wasn't that good." He deadpanned.

"Yeah, but, I mean, who hasn't seen Twilight? I'm doing you a favor here." I said.

"Ooookkaaayyy." Harry said, dragging the word out. Ever since I arrived tonight, Harry has been really easygoing and fun, and happy and I have to say I'm loving it. This side of Harry is no doubt enjoyable. Tonight he is cute and adorable and nothing like his usual self. I definitely like this side of him.

We started the movie and Harry made sarcastic comments throughout the entire thing, both of us making fun of it. At one point, I was so doubled over in laughter, and Harry was too, that the both of us were leaned up against each other, our bodies closer than they ever had been before.

"She....oh my gosh, Harry.....that's so funny!" I said, inbetween laughter, my head leaning up against his shoulder. HIs body was warm against mine, and I was so close I could smell his light scent of cologne.

It was at that moment that I think both of us realized we were probably closer than friends would normally sit. Especially friends that just became friends. Harry let out an awkward cough, and I abruptly sat up straight, putting more room between the two of us.

It wasn't necessarily awkward, but there was definitely tension in the air. The movie was still playing, but the air was definitely different. I wish I hadn't had moved so close to him, but I hardly realized I was doing it. It was just natural to move over there; subconsicous really. Its not like I'm romantically interested in him anyway. I mean, he's hot, yeah, but I don't feel that way about him and I really don't hope he took anything the wrong way.

Luckily, I was saved from my second-guessing thoughts when Harry's phone rang. Without saying anything, Harry pulled the phone out of his pocket and brought it up to his ear.

"Uh, I mean, I don't know." He said, and I wondered who he was talking to. He paused for a minute before speaking again. "Where is it?"

I just sat in silence, looking to the TV, trying not to make it awkward by listening to his entire conversation.

"I'll be there later." He said before saying goodbye and hanging up the phone.

"Everything okay?" I asked. I don't want to seem like I'm all up in his business, but I am sitting right here.

"Uh, yeah." He paused. "All my friends are going to this party tonight."

"Oh cool." I said, although it really wasn't cool. Parties only mean trouble.

"Yeah." Harry said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Uh, you can come, if you want." Wow never in a million years did I think he would ever offer that.

"Oh no. That's okay. Parties aren't my thing. Thanks for the offer though." I said.

"Sure." He said, and I couldn't help but read the relief on his face that I denied his offer.

"Do you need to leave now?" I asked, not wanting to inconvienece him. "I can go."

"No, its fine. We can watch the end of the movie. I made plans with you first." He said. I couldn't help but feel a little happy that he wasn't ditching me for his friends, who I'm sure he'd much rather be with.

"Okay."

"And I can drop you off on my way over there." He said.

"Sounds good." I said, and turned my attention back to the movie, which was now almost over.

Twenty minutes later, the movie was over and we were on our way to my house.

"Well thanks for introducing me to Twilight." Harry said.

"Oh, you're welcome." I laughed. "Have fun at your party tonight." I said.

"Thanks."

"Just be careful, okay. And don't drink and drive." I said sternly. Harry just looked at me, his green eyes showing guilt once again. It wasn't my intention to make him feel guilty, but I just wanted him and everyone else to be safe.

"I will, and I won't." He said slowly.

"Pinky promise?" I asked, pushing my pinky out towards him.

"What are we, eight?" He asked, laughing at my gesture.

"Yes. Now drink all you want, even though it's bad for you, but don't do anything stupid, okay?" I said, still holding my smallest finger out to him.

"Okay." He laughed, entwining his pinky with mine, and then shaking.

"Well thanks for the ride, and have fun." I said, getting out of the car.

"Thanks. Goodnight Paisley."

"Night, Harry."
