XLII - ASHES TO ASHES
Cami O'Connell's eyes fluttered open on the ground of compound courtyard, a dazed look on her face as she tried to remember what had happened. Rolling over onto her side, she finds her neck is still bleeding from where Klaus fed on her, and it all starts coming back to her at once. Her eyes scanned around until she saw Mikael's knife laid still where is had been dropped, and scrambled up to her feet to grab it, stumbling over to where Elijah still laid with Papa Tunde's blade still stuck inside his chest. Kneeling down beside where he laid writing on the floor in agony, she grimaces for a moment before taking the knife and stabbing it forcefully into Elijah's chest. She sliced his chest open the best that she could before reaching inside, pulling out Papa Tunde's blade after a small struggle.
Suddenly, Elijah gasps and bolts upright, and Cami quickly uses her arms to keep him balance upright. "Elijah?" She asks, as he gasped heavily in shock and pain. "Elijah, you have to listen to me. He got in my head, he spoke to me." She explained breathlessly. "This, all of this, it's a trick."
Elijah, who is still recovering from his injuries, pants frantically, overwhelmed by all of this information. "You've lost your mind. He's lost his mind."
"He needs her to trust him, so he can do what he needs to do!" She explained.
Elijah looked at her, baffled. "What? To...to...to what possible end?"
The blonde human took a deep breath. "He told me her secret. I know how we can kill Dahlia."
Elijah stared at her for a long moment, stunned, until his eyes caught sight of the two bodies laid on the ground. Elijah got to his feet and grabbed a cup, biting into his wrist and let his blood flow into it, before handing it over to Cami without a word. He silently walked over to where the two bodies, and came across Gia's charred corpse laid exactly where she died, and his face filled with with sympathy as he grabbed a sheet and covered her with it.
That was when he looked at her. Instantly, his eyes welled with tears as he collapsed to his knees beside her body, pulling her into his arms. Audrey Gilbert laid pale and still, no heartbeat coming from her chest, her once brown and bright eyes now closed and lifelessly dull. Dried blood stained her neck from the bite wound, blood that had pooled on the floor sticky and congealed in the ends of her hair.
"M-my love." His lip quivered as his tears fell, lowering his head as he couldn't stop the sob that escaped his throat. "I'm so sorry. I am so sorry." He apologized profusely, shaking his head as he cradled her tightly. "I promised you I'd keep you safe and I failed in that task. I--I failed our daughter. I--" He rested his forehead against hers, trying to bring himself together but he just couldn't. "I will get her back, no matter what it takes. I won't fail either of you again. I promise you."
He caught sight of glint in the corner of his eyes, and he looked to see her necklace laid on the ground, the little red stone it once had cracked and broken. He grabbed it and tucked it into his pocket, before lifting Audrey up bridal style and getting back to his feet, carefully laying her body down on the table. Cami, whose hands are still smeared with blood after pulling Papa Tunde's blade out of Elijah's chest, drinks a cup full of his blood to heal after Klaus attacked and fed on her, grimacing at the taste as she swallows it.
Once she's done, Elijah turns to her, looking furious as he growls quietly. "So, now that you have healed, what do you mean, Niklaus had a plan?!" His voices raises to a shout. "We had a plan! A plan he has mercilessly destroyed--"
"Your plan wouldn't have worked, Elijah!" Cami interrupts him loudly. "When Klaus got into my head, he said your plan would fail, so he had to enact one of his own."
Elijah glares at her, stunned and frustrated by this revelation. "And what might that be?"
"He has to get her to link to him."
Elijah stared at her in disbelief. "My brother wishes to bind himself to our enemy? She'll be virtually indestructible!"
"He said I had to convince you that everything he had to do, he had to do alone. You had the wrong ingredients to kill Dahlia, and he has to buy time before he finds the right ones." She continued to explain.
"How?" He asked in confusion.
After Cami told him everything Klaus had told her, the Original sat down on the edge of the fountain, his eyes looking over at Audrey's body brokenly. Cami looked at him and glanced Audrey's body, her face falling in sympathy. "I'm sorry about Audrey."
"Are you?" He questioned skeptically.
"I don't condone Klaus' actions. I'm trying to help you." She told him honestly, but he simply looked back at her in hurt, unable to believe what she was saying. "All I know is Klaus will do whatever he has to do--"
Those words made him lose his temper entirely. "--KLAUS WILL DO WHATEVER HE HAS TO DO FOR KLAUS." He bellowed furiously, holding up his phone as he moved toward the human. "Now Hayley isn't answering her phone." Elijah, overwhelmed with fear and anger, begins shouting again. "Now, WHAT HAS HE DONE?"
It was then Rebekah and Marcel walked into the courtyard, interrupting Elijah and Cami's conversation. "Don't blame the messenger." Rebekah told her brother sheepishly.
Rebekah and Marcel join Elijah and Cami by the fountain, and both of them look just as angry as Elijah. Elijah and Cami gape in shock when they see Rebekah in her original body. "Rebekah?"
The female Mikaelson shrugged. "Looks like Niklaus had a lot on his to-do list last night." She noticed the body laid on the table, a lump forming in her throat as she looked at Elijah. "I am so sorry about Audrey." She spoke softly, before looking over at Marcel hesitantly and continuing. "And, as for Hayley..."
Elijah looked at her worriedly. "What is it?"
Marcel let out a sigh. "When Klaus attacked me, he stole the spell that I used on the Crescent wolves..."
"So he would condemn her to the body of a beat?" He snarled in outrage.
Rebekah, who looks overwhelmed and worried, rushes over to Elijah and grasps his shoulders so she can look him in the eyes. "Elijah. Hayley will be human once a month. We will find her and we will help her."
Elijah shakes his head and tries to push Rebekah away. "No--"
Rebekah looks at him sadly. "We need to focus on who needs saving today." But Elijah just began to breath heavily, hyperventilating as his eyes once again found Audrey's body. Never in his life had he felt as truly broken as he did now. "Freya called-- Dahlia is... incapacitated. They are two hours north at an orchard near Pale River. She has Mira and Hope."
At the sound of Mira's name, Elijah said nothing more and sped out of the compound, leaving the other three alone.
* * * * * * * * * *
At the river orchid, Freya stood holding a fussy Hope in her arms as she rocks her soothingly, using her spare hand to rock Mira's car seat. Neither of the girls had stopped crying, despite Freya trying to calm them down. After a moment, Elijah arrived, and Freya looked over at him relieved.
"Well, my adage holds-- nothing good ever happens in a clearing in the woods." She stated, watching as her brother instantly walked over to his daughter.
Elijah said nothing to his older sister, as he carefully picked Mira up from her car seat, the little girl's cries calming but still sniffling in her fathers arms. Elijah closed his eyes as he held his daughter close to him, swaying her and kissing her forehead repeatedly as he did so. "It's okay, sweetheart. I'm here." He whispered, and Mira's sniffles began to stop as she rested her head against his shoulder, her hands gripping onto small clumps of his jacket. "I've got you." He finally looked over at Freya. "Nothing good ever happens where my brother is concerned." He said, giving a weak smile as he saw Hope was okay, and nodded in her direction. "With one exception." Walking closer, he rubbed his nieces back soothingly, and Hope whimpers as she rubs her small eyes with her hands. "How is she?"
"She's a Mikaelson. She's resilient." Freya nodded and looked at Mira, who had settled now she had one of her parents. "Both of them are." She then watches as Elijah examines Klaus and Dahlia's bodies, both laid incapacitated on the ground, Klaus with the golden dagger once again sticking out of his chest. "When I woke, they were like this. Rebekah tells me Klaus has a plan to kill Dahlia, that he knew our plan would not work?"
Elijah scowled at the sound of his brothers name, but for the sake of his daughter in his arms, he kept himself calm. "Yes. According to him, our ingredients were incorrect. Niklaus infiltrated Dahlia's mind. You didn't break her heart. We needed the blood of the witch she loved the most, and you are not that witch-- that honor goes to our beloved mother." He told her dryly.
Freya let out a sigh of frustration at that. "So, we need Esther's blood? Well, that's impossible-- I killed her."
Though mildly surprised by the news, Elijah doesn't look at all upset. "One incarnation." He stated, causing her to look at him in shock. "Our mother is buried in New Orleans. Niklaus wants us to revive the original body."
Elijah, Mira, Freya, and Hope eventually made it back to the compound, and the two girls were settled down in Hope's nursery, both of them exhausted after the nights events. Once they were down, Elijah and Freya joined Rebekah and Marcel in the living room, where they had laid Dahlia and Klaus' bodies on the ground when they got back.
Rebekah sighed, as Marcel bent down to examine Klaus' body. "Nik is demented!" She exclaimed. "Are we really to dig up our mother, burn her to ash, swap said ash with Kol's, and then trick Davina into using up her last chance to bring someone back from the dead?" She looked around at each of them. "Not to mention we lose the opportunity to save Kol...if Davina doesn't turn us inside out!"
Elijah crossed his arms passive aggressively. "Or, we dig a deep hole and leave both our problems at the bottom of it."
Freya unhappily stares at Dahlia's body. "I say we choose a more permanent option-- find the white oak stake, kill Klaus, Dahlia dies with him."
Marcel scoffed. "Well, yeah, and so do I, and every other vampire Klaus has turned."
Rebekah hears a strange sound and frowns before turning back toward the bodies. When she looks back at Klaus, she notices the golden dagger in his chest beginning to melt. "The dagger!" She exclaimed incredulously, causing everyone to look and notice exactly what she she was seeing. "It's bloody melting."
Elijah sighed as it became clear what they had to do. "We have no choice but to finish the task that Niklaus has set." All four of them looked grim as they considered their only option and watch as the dagger continues to melt.
As Freya and Marcel remained at the compound to search for Kol's ashes, Elijah and Rebekah made their way to the burnt plantation ruins, and get to work digging up Esther's remains. Elijah pulled the coffin up and out of the grave, setting it it down on the ground as Rebekah looks on unhappily. "Oh, isn't this lovely. Fresh air, the birds are singing in the trees... the perfect day to dig up Mommy Dearest's corpse." She mused sarcastically.
Elijah picks up a can of gasoline and begins to pour it over Esther's remains. "A perfect day to carry out the assignment of a lunatic." He muttered bitterly.
"What's that saying? "A madman often speaks the truth?" I can't help but think we should be using this opportunity to raise Kol and not this daft bitch." She scowled down at the coffin before them.
"You speak as if it's a foregone conclusion." He angrily throws the can of gasoline into the grave. "Let's not forget, we still have to deceive Davina Claire. So, perhaps we steal a page from Niklaus' playbook? She might yet help us if she has no idea that she is helping us."
Rebekah remains silent for a long moment, looking both guilty and unhappy at what they had to do. " I said I'd stay in my witch body until I saved Kol." Elijah glanced at her sympathetically. "Now, I've broken my promise, and I am actively conspiring to shanghai Davina of her one chance to bring him back herself. I feel like a traitor."
"You are not to blame." He says sternly.
"It's not just my promise to Kol." She admitted. "Now, because of Nik's spite, I am once again built to take life...robbed of the chance to create it." Rebekah looks as though she's about to cry, but after a moment, she forces herself to shake it off before admonishing herself. "Enough." She looks sadly over at Elijah. "He stole from you, too."
Elijah looked ready to cry once again. "Audrey was innocent." He spoke quietly. "Innocence does not do well in our family." He took a deep breath. "I brought her into all of this. I should have broken our bond and left her as far away from me as possible."
Rebekah frowned deeply, pulling him back as he went to turn his back to her. "Elijah, it hurts me to see you pretend you don't deserve happiness! That you don't deserve her."
He looked at her. "And what about you, sister? Where is your happiness?"
Rebekah has no answer for this, and instead simply pulls a silver lighter with the Mikaelson "M" seal engraved into it from her pocket and lights it. " I suppose it's a family trait-- everything we love, we turn to ash." She angrily tosses the lighter on top of Esther's gasoline-soaked remains as she and Elijah somberly watch it go up in flames.
* * * * * * * * * *
After they successfully managed to trick Davina into raising Esther, Esther sat in a chair in the back room of St. James Infirmary, wearing a black dress and black flats, the cursed shackles chained around her wrists. Elijah sits in the chair behind her and causally spun around the knife in his hand.
"Let me guess-- you brought me back from the dead to torture me." Esther guessed in mock amusement.
Elijah rolled his eyes heavily in annoyance. "My dear mother, we simply need your blood. Though, in the event that you should suffer horribly, I can't promise I won't enjoy it immensely."
Klaus suddenly arrives and joins them in the dining room. Esther maintains her usual serene demeanor, but Elijah immediately becomes enraged by the sight of him. "Ah, Mother." He smirked as he looked at her. "I've arrived just in time for another one of your deaths, and as much as I appreciate the front-row seat, I'm afraid I'm going to have to postpone the festivities."
Elijah growls lowly. "You're in excellent spirits."
Klaus smiled smugly. "Lucky for you, as I'm the one needed to save the day."
"Is that what it's called?" The elder of the pair asked, unimpressed.
"Why not?" Klaus shrugged in response. "My plans worked perfectly." Elijah becomes even more enraged by this glib comment and lunges for him, but Klaus stops him before he can. "Easy, Elijah-- I can see your red door swinging wide open, but our job's not yet done."
"So kill her and be and be done with it." Elijah glared sternly.
"To be clear, I do want her blood, but I want it on this blade--" Klaus holds up a long silver sword. "--Which I've had bound with the soil from Dahlia's homeland, not to mention Viking ash. Mother's demise will have to wait. You see, I need her to weaken Dahlia's defenses." Klaus leans next to Esther's head and whispers threateningly into her ear. "Bit of psychological warfare before I slaughter the both of you."
"Ah, yes." The Mikaelson mother nodded sarcastically. "You expect me to walk willingly to my death."
Klaus grinned. "Well, your willing participation would have been a bonus, but it's far from necessary. If needs be, I'll drag you there myself."
Suddenly, Rebekah walks in and joins the group. Both Esther and Klaus are shocked to see Rebekah in her original body. "Yes, dear Mother, you do not have a choice. Then again, why should you be any different from the rest of us? We're all dancing puppets in Nik's end-of-days marionette show. He forces every move we make."
"And how long are you gonna stand there and pretend you don't need me to?" Klaus looked between her and Elijah, upset. "The both of you have fought me at every turn, leaving me no choice but to act alone! We're no strangers to disagreements on the battlefield, but we also have a very long history of doing whatever it takes to win the war."
"And what of Gia?" Elijah questioned furiously. Klaus seems surprised by how upset Elijah is as his brother walks toward him. Once they're standing face-to-face, Elijah smiles fakely at him before continuing. "Hayley?" He continued before his fake smile dropped, and he made no attempt to hide the the stone cold anger he held toward him. "AUDREY?!"
Klaus's smile falters, but he tries his best remain unbothered. "Collateral damage."
Livid, Elijah punches Klaus forcefully in the face, the hybrid stumbling slightly and taking a moment to recover, as both his siblings glared at him hatefully. "You knew how much she meant to me." Elijah's voice faltered, as all the emotions he'd been trying to hold in came bubbling to the surface. "And you have taken her from me, Niklaus! You killed her without a second thought. She was supposed to be your friend!" He yelled, and Klaus remained silent as he tried to hide his guilt. "She was your family!" He took a deep breath, looking down. "I should have expected you'd do this to me." He admitted. "But not only have you taken her from me, you've taken her from Mira. You've denied your niece the chance to ever know her mother." He shook his head. "You claim your actions are part of some ruse-- this was punishment!"
"Punishment? Whatever for?" Klaus tilted his head as he played dumb. "Perhaps the dagger you put in my heart?"
"You brought that upon yourself! No, we have fought together for centuries, and once again, to break your enemy, you broke your family." Klaus stared at him with a mixture of surprise and hurt, having never once seen Elijah as enraged as he was in this moment. "Well, know this-- whatever the outcome tonight, you will no longer see me by your side. You want to be alone? Well, congratulations. You have your wish." Elijah turns to Esther and grabs her by the shackles as he drags her out the door. "Come, Mother."
It was silent for a long moment as they left, and Rebekah crossed her arms as she looked at Klaus. "She was your friend. She was our family, the mother of our niece." She listed off, and Klaus looked away from her silently. "And your dastardly actions have taken her from all of us, most importantly Elijah and Mira. Elijah will never forgive you, and when that little girl learns the truth when she is older, neither will she. And you'll have no one but yourself to blame, Nik." She snapped brutally honestly, before turning on her heel and walking out.
* * * * * * * * * *
That night, Dahlia dragged a struggling Freya by the arm into a storage warehouse filled with different kinds of antique cars. "Two centuries ago, this city hung its traitors right here. I thought it only fitting that it be your slaughtering grounds."
Dahlia casts a spell that starts to choke Freya, and she falls to her knees and gasps for breath. Dahlia then smashes a bottle of salt on the ground and uses her magic to form a magical circle around herself and Freya, trapping the latter inside, before walking around and waving her hand as she casts a spell around them.
"I actually pity you." Freya pants as she watches her. "Over the course of our long lives together, I could see you were broken. I used to think it was my fault, but in time, I learned your ability to love died long ago."
Dahlia considers this for a moment before she replies. "Darkness isn't born, you know. It's created... by the snuffing out of the light." She kneels behind Freya and speaks in her ear. "So, however you thought you might mend me, please know you never could. Whenever I looked in your eyes, I saw your mother-- the sister who turned my heart to stone. And, with that stone, I will crush every one of her children."
Suddenly, Klaus appeared behind her, and Rebekah follows in behind him. "Isn't there a saying about stones and glass houses?"
"In case the analogy is lost on you, I believe my brother is calling a hypocritical bitch." Rebekah sneers at her.
Dahlia glances over at Freya with amusement on her face. "Hmm. Bringing vampires to a witch fight. Someone hasn't learned their lesson."
Klaus, however, held amusement on his own face at her confidence. "Well, I can be a bit thick sometimes..." The sound of chains rattling can be heard behind him, and after a moment, Esther appears with Elijah and joins Klaus and Rebekah in circling around Dahlia. "Although, on this occasion, I'd say I took your lesson to heart."
Dahlia and Esther stared at one another in complete shock, and for a split second, it appeared as though Dahlia was going to cry. However, she just began to laugh instead. "My sister... in chains? Hahaha! Is... is she to be a gift to buy your freedom? Because I brought something." She pulls out the white oak stake and holds it up, causing thunder to crash overhead.
Klaus gave her an incredulous look. " One stake, three of us. Even if you don't hesitate, the other two will rip you in half."
"Sound thinking." Dahlia nodded but smirked. "But...small thinking."
She holds up the stake again and causes thunder and lighting to rumble in the sky above again. After a moment, the stake is telekinetically thrown up into the air, where it explodes into such tiny pieces that they look like snowflakes falling down around them. She then uses magic to direct the stake fragments into the mouths of Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah as they breathe, and they all begin to cough and gasp in pain as their veins become visibly red and irritated.
"You're killing them!" Freya yelled desperately.
The three originals vampires fall to their knees and cough forcefully, clearly in agony from the fragments of white oak in their lungs. Dahlia smirks gleefully at Esther, who seems surprisingly upset to see her children hurting. "Now, sister, let us watch together as I burn your children from the inside out."
Esther hesitates for a moment before walking toward her sister. "You still carry around so much anger for me after all these years?"
"You broke your vow!" Dahlia snarled at her furiously. "We were to stand together, always and forever, and you left to marry that brutish Viking imbecile. You ended my family, and they we the result."
Dahlia gestures to all of Esther's children before casting a spell that knocks Elijah, Rebekah and Klaus backward. Elijah scratches at his neck, and the veins that run along his throat turn blood-red and swollen. "No!" Rebekah gasped out, and the original vampires all continue to gag and cough, and their veins become even redder and more irritated through their skin.
"You call this my wrongdoing?" Esther shot back in disbelief. "You made me bargain away my firstborn! My daughter!"
Dahlia shook her head at that. "Not just this firstborn, but every firstborn!" Klaus pulls out the blade bound with the ingredients that make up Dahlia's weakness and tries to pull himself to his feet. "And even then, you found a way to deny me that which you had sworn to be mine! How do you think that felt?"
"D'AGH!" Klaus jumps toward Dahlia with the blade in hand, but she telekinetically throws him backward, which causes him to drop the blade.
Dahlia looks up at the ceiling's skylight, where she can see the waning crescent moon has hit its apex. She smiles and looks down at Esther. "Now, Esther, say goodbye to the last of your children."
Dahlia thrusts her hand forward and puts Freya in a telekinetic choke-hold, which causes her to gasp desperately for breath. Elijah, Rebekah, and Klaus are looking as though they're running out of time as well, but before Dahlia can give Freya the killing blow, Esther rushes forward at the last moment and stops her.
"Sister, wait! Wait!" Dahlia looks at her and loosens her choke-hold on Freya, but doesn't let go completely as she watches Esther stare at her pleadingly. "You've won, Dahlia. You have everything you ever wanted, including two firstborns of a new generation! You have bested us all. At least let me try to make amends." She walks even closer to Dahlia, until they are finally face-to-face. "Let me share with you the glorious freedom that I have found... in death." Esther lunges forward and wraps the long chain that connects her manacles around Dahlia's neck and chokes her with it. Dahlia releases her magical hold on Freya to fight against her sister's grip, and Freya quickly uses her own magic to break the magic circle binding her and cure her siblings of their white-oak-induced sickness. They all begin to cough up blood and sawdust, but otherwise, they seem to be healed. Esther is struggling to keep strangling Dahlia, and turns back toward her children. "Elijah?"
Elijah picks up the blade, and when Esther nods in encouragement, he tosses it to Klaus. Armed with the blade, Klaus speeds toward them and stabs Esther in the back with the blade, which goes through her and into Dahlia's heart as well, killing them both. Dahlia and Esther, whose bodies have both turned to ash, are still standing in an embrace, both looking more content as they've ever been. Freya, Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah all stare at them for a long moment before Klaus finally speaks.
"Seems we're officially orphans."
* * * * * * * * * *
Returning to the compound, there was no joyous mood or anyone wanting to celebrate. Yes, Dahlia was dead, but the victory had came at a price. As the four siblings walked through the carriageway into the courtyard, Elijah said nothing to his brother as he moved toward the table he had laid Audrey down on, but froze in his tracks. The table was empty as if she was never there, and his eyes scanned the room frantically and desperately, Rebekah, Klaus, and Freya looking confused as they noticed what he had.
"Elijah?" A small voice croaked from behind, and all of them turned to see Audrey stood shakily behind them, still wearing the clothes she died in and caked in dried up blood. However, the wound on her neck was completely healed. "Elijah, I...I don't..."
But Elijah said nothing, moving forward instantly pulling her tightly into his arms and never wanting to let go. Instantly, the Gilbert girl broke down into a flood of tears in his hold, sobbing into his chest as she wrapped her arms around his torso. Audrey Gilbert was no stranger to death, having had it's fingers wrapped around her many times in the past, but each time she'd managed to escape it mostly unscathed. Yet, this time was different. She woke from the darkness with a burning hunger in the back of her throat, everything around her much louder than it ever had been in the past. The second that she opened her eyes, flashes of what happened flood through her mind, from Gia's teeth sinking into her neck to everything going cold and still.
Pulling away slightly, Elijah cupped her face in his hands as he stared her in awe, his mind not quite putting the pieces together. "H--how?" He stuttered, wiping her tears with the pad of his thumbs. "I don't understand."
"Mira's blood will have passed from her system by the time she died." Rebekah slowly shook her head. "It wouldn't have been able to turn her." Her eyes narrowed on Klaus. "Did you--"
"No." He cut her off, guilt once again in his tone as he realized what he was admitting. "No, I never."
"Gia." Audrey swallowed hard, squeezing her eyes shut as she thought about the day before. "She didn't want to hurt me. She..." Her voice cracked. "Before she pulled me inside, she fed me her blood. She wanted to protect me." Her fingers shakily touched her lips, and Elijah finally caught sight of how they were stained with red, his face falling as he realized what it meant. "E-everything was so loud, and all I could feel was the hunger...I--I tried to ignore it, I tried to...but then I smelled the blood stash hidden around here and I...I couldn't help it..."
"You have nothing to be sorry about, my love." Elijah breathed out, resting his forehead against hers. "I am going to help you through this, every step of the way, I give you my word." Unable to help himself, he crashed his lips against hers and savored each second of it, it being something he thought he'd never be able to do again only a few moments ago. Audrey melted into his touch as she kissed him back, and both of them felt as they were whole again. "I love you so much." His voice broke as he slowly pulled away. "Seeing you...it was the worst thing that I have ever felt."
Her eyes glistened sadly as she reached out and touched his face, and Elijah leaned into her touch, closing his eyes and in relief. Though her hand pulled away a moment later, a panic and fear filled her brown orbs. "Mira?!"
"She's safe." He quickly told her, holding her arms gently. "She's safe. She's with Hope, Camille is watching them." She opened her mouth to say something, but he shook his head. "Dahlia is dead." He assured her, and a heavy sigh left her lips. "You have nothing to worry about." Elijah lifted her hands up to his lips and kissed them affectionately. "We'll go get her now."
"I'll make her a daylight ring." Freya spoke up from behind, Elijah looking at her gratefully. She sent a kind smile toward Audrey, who rested in Elijah's arms looking overwhelmed. "It'll be ready by the time you return."
"Thank you, Freya." The Gilbert girl said quietly.
"Of course." The Mikaelson witch nodded, before turning and walking away to fetch her grimoire.
Rebekah wasted no time and walked forward, pulling the girl away from Elijah and into her arms. Audrey flinched slightly before she relaxed and hugged her back, the blonde looking at her with a bright smile despite everything they'd still lost. "I'm so bloody glad you're okay."
"Well, I couldn't leave you alone." Audrey said softly, as she thought of the day the two of them first met. "Far too many boys. Us girls finally have them outnumbered."
Rebekah laughed wholeheartedly, pulling her into another warm embrace. "Too right." She mumbled, kissing her cheek when she finally pulled away and walked off.
"Audrey--"
"No." Audrey snapped coldly, all the emotions she was showing before leaving her face at the sound of his voice. Klaus swallowed hard in hurt, falling completely silent. "You leave me the hell alone." She warned angrily. "I'm done, Klaus." He flinched at the sound of his name, noting how she no longer called him Nik. "I'm done." Turning on her heel, she walked out on a mission to find her daughter, leaving the two brothers stood silently in the courtyard.
Elijah looked at Klaus blankly, and said nothing as he left after his love, leaving the original hybrid completely alone.
And we are done with season two.
