LIII - WILD AT HEART
"Where the bloody hell is she?"
Audrey gave Klaus an annoyed look, bouncing Mira in her arms as he burst into the study, where they were with Elijah. He was looking through books, trying to find out what exactly the weapon was that could be used against them all, which was proving more difficult then they originally thought it would be. Audrey had been trying to help, but Mira woke up crying, which had taken all of her attention. She was teething, from what the parents could tell, and it was hard knowing there wasn't much they could do to soothe her pain.
Just as she had been starting to settle, Klaus's outburst set her off again. "Stop." She gave him a look, walking in front of him. She placed Mira in his arms, not giving him another choice about the matter, and Mira immediately stopped crying and looked up at her uncle with curious eyes. "There." Audrey smiled triumphantly, and gave him a warning look. "You will stay calm while you are holding your niece, and if you don't and she starts crying again, whatever it is you're angry about will be the least of your concerns. Got it?"
Elijah snickered under his breath, as Klaus opened his mouth to argue, but the glare he received from the Gilbert girl stopped him. "Understood." He nodded, swallowing hard.
"Great." She smiled innocently. "Please, continue your usual ranting and raving."
Elijah cleared his throat, trying hide his amused smile as he raised a brow at his brother knowingly. "I assume we are talking about Camille..." He began, and Klaus let out an exasperated sigh. "Just refresh my memory, Niklaus-- was I the one who impulsively handed her a daylight ring? Oh, no, that's right. It was you."
The Mikaelson hybrid rolled his eyes. "She left, didn't she?"
"In a shocking turn of events, yes." Elijah told him, sarcasm clear in his voice. "So, why don't you go and find her? I shall deal with the growing nightmare of our family's potential extinction."
"Yes, always the diligent defender, despite the fact that the danger has somewhat subsided, what, with Tristan de Martel now literally sleeping with the fishes?" Klaus shot back, as Mira rested her head against his chest calmly, looking rather content in his arms.
"A darker threat remains." Elijah told him. "Now, if something out there is capable of killing us--" He lowered his voice to a mocking whisper. "--We should probably find it."
"I'd love to. However, I got Camille into this mess--"
"She left around sunrise." Hayley's quiet voice spoke up, making them all look toward the doorway. She stood their tiredly, holding Hope on her hip, her changing bag slung across her other shoulder. "My guess is that she needed some air? I couldn't sleep. I saw her leaving from my balcony." She paused, biting her lip as she shifted nervously on her feet. "So, I was wondering if maybe it was okay... if Hope and I stay here a few days?"
"Of course you may." Elijah nodded, giving her a weak smile which she returned in appreciation. "Forgive me." He excused as his phone began to buzz, pressing a kiss to Mira's forehead before he left the room.
Klaus glanced at Audrey, who nodded knowing and took Mira back into her arms, who had managed to fall back to sleep as Klaus held her. He made his way toward the door, giving Hayley a comforting smile. "Hayley, this family comes with many, many hardships, but there is at least one benefit-- you will always have a home here."
With that, he left, Hope beginning to whimper as he did so. Hayley sighed and bounces her gently on her hip to soothe her, and Audrey noticed the sadness still clear on her face. "Come on." She said gently, rubbing her arm as she moved toward her. "Let's get the girls down, and then we can get you a drink. You look like you need it."
Hayley nodded, giving a weak smile. "You have no idea."

Once Hayley had gone back to the apartment to collect some things for her and Hope, they, Mira, and Audrey spent the day in the compound. Elijah was dealing with something, while Klaus was still gone in search of Cami. Once both of the girls were settled in their nurseries, Hayley tried to get some rest herself, though it wasn't working despite her best attempts.
"You have no right!" Both women heard Cami's voice yell downstairs. "Those dark objects are my family's legacy."
"Well, that's funny, because I seem to remember my brother Kol making them, so perhaps they've been my family's legacy all along!" Klaus's frustrated voice shouted back.
Hayley and Audrey exchanged a look, both of them shaking their heads as they moved toward the balcony, making their way downstairs as they listened. "Give them back, or I will take them back, and I swear you will regret this moment." Cami threatened seriously.
"The only thing I forget is failing to realize how far you've spun out of control!" He let out in disbelief. "And you can forget about leaving!"
The O'Connell woman stared at him for a long moment, a blank expression on her face. "She was right, wasn't she? Aurora? She did this to turn you against me, to rob me of the one advantage I have over her... My humanity. And me, like this? It's a problem for you, isn't it? Not the darkness-- that you find intriguing-- the fact that I am out of control." Klaus scowled at her words but said nothing, making a smug look appear on her face. "I'm out of your control, and you hate it, don't you? You have spent ten centuries getting the entire world to tremble at your name, but you're the one who's terrified, Klaus. You are a scared little kid, convinced he'll be tossed aside the second he isn't needed." Angrily, he grabs her by the arm and she lets out a yelp of surprise. "Let go of me!"
"Nik." Audrey warned as she and Hayley walked toward them. Klaus glanced at her in surprise, having not heard her call him Nik in months. Not after everything that happened with Dahlia. "Enough. Let her go."
"You can't just force her to stay here, Klaus." Hayley told him firmly.
The Mikaelson man glared at her at that, but Cami looked at the two women in relief. "Finally! Someone who's on my side."
Hayley gives Cami a look. "Oh, don't get me wrong-- I remember when I turned, and you for sure shouldn't have a box of witch crap." She told her bluntly, making Cami's relief fade as Hayley looked back at Klaus. "But, you can't hold her hostage, either. Let me talk to her."
"I hardly think now is the time for a women's empowerment meeting." He snapped, unamused.
"She died, Klaus." Hayley told him with a sigh, not in the mood to argue with him. "Because she got caught up in the Mikaelson world. Just like me. Just like Jackson. So yeah, the three of us have a few things to talk about."
Before he could argue, Elijah's voice interrupted from the balcony upstairs. "Niklaus, Audrey, a word?"
"Come on." Audrey muttered, grabbing Klaus by the arm and tugging him away from Cami and Hayley.
When the three were upstairs in the study, Elijah explained to the pair about what he'd been doing all day. Aya had summoned him to the Strix house, to meet with one of their coven witches, who gave him a glimpse at what the weapon could be. "I thought the pale horse might be something biblical, or even tied to one of the equestrian constellations." He explained as he searched for book on the shelf. "There's Pegasus, perhaps even Equuleus."
"Neither of those sound like a weapon, unless they plan to bore us to death." Klaus sighed in a mix of annoyance and frustration, sitting down on the couch beside Audrey. "You know, it would be nice if, just once, the witches bloody well said what they mean."
The couple exchanged a glance, both of them knowing where his mind was truly at in that moment. "Camille has just turned, Niklaus." Elijah told him, giving him a look. "Leave her be."
Klaus let out a small scoff. "You think I should abandon her, then?"
"That's not what he's saying." Audrey gave him a knowing look.
"She's already served as a pawn in Aurora's games." He pointed out to his younger brother. "Her distance would be a mercy." He then looked between his brother and his love honestly. "I need you both. A storm is coming."
Knowing he was right, Klaus gave a reluctant nod.

A while later, Audrey, Elijah, and Hayley stood watching in confusion, as he began to search the shelves frantically as he rambled. As Elijah and Audrey continued to research, he went to see how Hayley's conversation with Cami had gone, only to find out that Hayley had let her go home. As they were discussing it, something Hayley said had made him realize what the weapon was, but he had yet to fill the three in on the answer.
"All my efforts to protect and provide comfort for this family..." He trailed off, as he searched inside another box.
"Klaus, you're not making any sense." Hayley said in confusion.
"The pale horse!" He turned to them in frustration. "It isn't a constellation, nor is it a biblical verse. It's a...a trinket I made when we were children. A toy carved from kindling which I gave to Rebekah in hopes of easing her fears."
Elijah frowned at that, walking closer to his brother. "I collected the firewood myself. It was fallen branches from everywhere, and..." His eyes widen in alarm as he realized exactly what Klaus had. "The horse was made of the white oak..." Both Audrey and Hayley look as horrified as them at this, as Elijah turns to look at the two girls. "That weapon is here."
"It's in the apartment." Hayley said in realization, making all their eyes land on her. "I saw it earlier when I went to go get Hope some stuff. I left it there on the table."
Leaving Freya in charge of watching Hope and Mira, the four made their way over to Hayley's apartment, and began to search frantically for the wooden horse. It was nowhere in sight on the table, and they began to check over every spot that they could think of for it, pulling Hope's toys out of their baskets.
"This doesn't make any sense." The Marshall-Kenner hybrid shook her head, running a hand through her hair in confusion. "It was here. I saw it."
"When?" Klaus asked, his back to them as he leaned against the kitchen counter.
"This afternoon. I swear." Hayley answered seriously.
"Oh, I believe you." Klaus sighed as he turned to face them. "We're just here a little too late."
"What do you mean?" Audrey raised a brow at him.
"There is only one other person capable of deciphering the witch's riddle, the very person with whom I shared my memories of that night... My trusted therapist."
Leaving this chapter there as there wasn't anything else needed from the episode. I was going to post this yesterday, but I kind of just ate and went to sleep after I got home from work, I was more tired then I thought I was.
There will be another update later on today, as the next chapter probably won't be a long one, but I will try to make it as interesting as I can.
I hope you all enjoyed!
