III - GIRL IN NEW ORLEANS
In the days that passed following the failed plan, Marcel still had yet to return Elijah like he told Klaus he would, leaving Rebekah and Audrey to continue their search. Neither of them had any faith in the deal Klaus had made, and they wanted Elijah out of Davina's hands as quickly as possible. So while Hayley sat talking to one of the witches about the baby, the two sat at the table together, researching what Rebekah remembered about the attic. If they could narrow it down from what was left of the memories Davina erased, they hoped they'd be able to find him without the help of magic.
"I told you Agnes, I feel great." Hayley assured from where she sat on the couch, flipping through a magazine.
"You are overdue for a checkup." Agnes pointed out to her.
"What am I do? Pop into the Quarter for a quick ultrasound?" Hayley mused, sarcasm seeping into her voice. "A pregnant werewolf escorted by a witch? Nothing to see here!"
Rebekah doesn't move her eyes from the laptop screen as she spoke up. "A lot of women would kill to have a child. It strikes me as odd that you're not taking better care of yours." She informed the Marshall girl, Hayley and Audrey picking up on the jealousy in her tone.
"I know a doctor out in the bayou, off the beaten path." Agnes told Hayley, who grew quiet at Rebekah's comment. "Now, I took the liberty of making an appointment for you. Tonight, after-hours, just us. Vampires will never get word of it."
Hayley thinks for a moment, before nodding her head reluctantly in agreement. "Okay, fine. Bayou-baby-doctor it is."
"I'll come with you." Audrey glanced over her shoulder at the pair, looking mainly at Hayley. "You shouldn't go alone, just to be safe." She noticed the way Agnes's face faltered, and gave her a suspicious look. "That won't be a problem, will it?"
"No, of course not." The witch shook her head, forcing a smile. She got to her feet, looking at Hayley. "Let's go get you ready." She looked back at Audrey. "Just join us when you're ready to go." With that, the pair left the room, Audrey's eyes lingering on Agnes as she left.
Something about Agnes didn't sit right with her. Pushing it to the back of her mind, she placed her focus back on the laptop, where Rebekah had pulled up satellite photos of the French Quarter. Klaus pauses behind them as he walked in, letting out a laugh as he saw what they were doing. "Please, girls, tell me you're not still at it with the internet search. How does one begin, anyway? Just type in "anonymous attic?""
"I know how someone begins when they search you." Audrey muttered in annoyance. "They just have search up the definition of asshole."
Klaus rolled his eyes, pouring himself a drink. "Funny." He deadpanned. "How long do you plan on hating me for, exactly?"
"Forever feels appropriate." She hummed simply.
Before their bickering could continue, Rebekah cut in as she tried to narrow down the search. "Someone has to find Elijah, even if we have to search every bloody attic in New Orleans."
"Like looking for a needle in rather large pile of needles." He sipped his drink.
"I remember details about the attic Marcel took me to." Rebekah told him, as Audrey moved the laptop into her lap, typing in these details as she spoke. "There were shutters on the windows behind Elijah's coffin."
"Well, that should narrow it down immensely." Klaus sat in the armchair in front of them, earning a look of distaste from them both. "Myself, I prefer actual strategy as opposed to mind-numbing labor. Marcel's delay in returning Elijah makes me suspect he's no longer in charge of the situation. If Davina's loyalty to Marcel is strained, perhaps the young witch will be open to discussing a new alliance."
Rebekah gave him a bitter smile. "As usual, your power grabs are more important than rescuing your brother."
"I prefer to think of it as killing two birds with one stone." He informed them, tilting his glass around in his hand. "Rob Marcel of his secret weapon, bring our brother home."
Rebekah just gives him a tight smile, as Audrey passed her back the laptop, rolling her eyes. "Finding Elijah should come top of that list, Klaus. Not last." Audrey told him bluntly, getting to her feet and looking at Rebekah. "I'll go with Hayley to this appointment. Call me if you find anything?"
Rebekah nodded. "I will." She promised, and with that, the Gilbert girl left the siblings alone.

When it got dark, Agnes drove Hayley and Audrey out to the bayou, to where the doctor's office was located. When they pulled up outside, both of them were skeptical as they looked at the building in front of them, Hayley turning and giving Agnes a look. "This is the doctor's office?"
Agnes gives her a calm smile. "Dr. Paige is only this far out because Marcel's men kept terrorizing her patients. Go! She won't bite."
Hayley bites her lip before nodding, getting out of the car with Audrey following behind her. The Marshall girl glanced at her, as they made their way toward the clinic. "You didn't have to come with me, you know." She told her. "I know you're focused on trying to get Elijah back."
"Elijah promised you that both of us would protect you." Audrey reminded her softly, giving a small smile. "I intend to keep that promise, and when he's back, he's going to do the same." She glanced back at the car, where Agnes sat watching them go inside, sending a smile when she saw Audrey looking at her. "Besides, I trust this witch even less than Sophie. It's best you aren't left alone with her."
"I couldn't do it, you know." Hayley said, making Audrey look at her in confusion. "Still help Klaus with everything he's put you through lately. I mean, that's what you're doing by keeping me safe. Keeping the baby safe. You're helping Klaus."
Audrey chuckled, looking down. "I hate Klaus right now." She told her honestly. "But that doesn't mean I want to see any harm come to his child. The baby is family, just like he is." She rolled her eyes slightly. "He has a really strange way of treating those who are his family, but still."
Hayley smiled in slight amusement, and the pair made their way into the office, where Dr. Paige was waiting for them. After a quick introduction, Hayley laid herself down on the exam table, letting Dr. Paige start an ultrasound. Audrey leaned on the wall near the door, glancing out to see Agnes sitting in the small reception area, waiting for them. Feeling her phone buzz inside her pocket, she grabbed it to find a text off of Rebekah.
Something I need to tell you. Where are you and Hayley?
Audrey quickly let her know where they were, before shoving her phone away again, glancing up as Hayley began to sit up. "Your baby's heart rate is perfect." Dr. Paige told her.
A smile tugged at Hayley's lips, as she wiped the gel off her stomach. "I knew it. She's a tough one, like her mom."
Audrey just smiled as as Dr. Paige chuckled, her eyes falling on Hayley's shoulder where her cardigan had slipped down. "That's a unique birthmark." She commented.
Hayley just pulled her cardigan up, her smile tightening slightly. "We're pretty much done here, right?"
"Your blood pressure is a bit high, I've got something for it." The Doctor says, before she walks out of the room.
As Hayley looks at Audrey to say something, both girls jump slightly, as they hear a wolf howl loudly outside. Exchanging a look, they make their way toward the window to look outside, as a set of car headlights fill their view. Instantly, Audrey moved back in the direction of the door, to see two men walk inside. Both of them instantly walking over Agnes, talking to them quietly so no one else could hear, as Dr. Paige makes her way back inside the room.
"Ahh, you know, I'm-I'm actually not that good with pills." The werewolf said anxiously, as the medication is held out to her.
Dr. Paige chuckles nervously. "Heh, neither am I, truth be told."
Setting down the cup on the table, Dr. Paige begins to prepare a syringe, turning to Hayley very quickly with it. Hayley grabs her arm and pushes it away from her, headbutting the doctor in the face, before shoving the syringe in her neck. Dr. Paige fell to the ground unconscious, as Audrey slammed the door shut and locked it, as the men went to run inside at seeing what was happening.
"Window." Audrey ordered, running over and pulling it open. "Out, now."
Hayley didn't argue and climbed out, waiting as Audrey climbed out after her, just as the the door to the office was kick in. Neither of them wasted any time, and took off running into the woods ahead of them, not looking back in effort to get away as far as they could. Hearing footsteps catching up them, Audrey grabbed Hayley's arm and yanked her behind the nearest tree. The two remained as silent as possible, as the men from the clinic walked by, not noticing them as looked around. Her eyes flaring gold, the female werewolf runs up behind them and kicks the first man in the gut, sending him flying to the ground. As the second man turned to grab her, she runs and jumps, kicking him down and snapping his neck in the process.
Audrey blinked in surprise, before grabbed a heavy branch from the ground, swinging and hitting the third man around the head with it. He groans and stumbles back in pain, allowing her to kick him to the ground, hitting again and again until he fell unconscious. The sound of gun being cocked comes from behind, and Audrey quickly spins around, her hands gripping the shotgun in the mans hands. They lock eyes for a moment, before he uses the gun to push her back against a tree, the Gilbert girl using all her strength to try and push him away. Suddenly, blood pours from his neck and he begins to choke, dropping to the ground dead.
"Wha--" She pauses as she clocks Hayley now in front of her, holding a knife in her hands. "Thank you." She breathed out.
Suddenly, they hear a snap, and watch as another body drops to the ground nearby. "Have to say, I'm impressed." Rebekah said, stepping over the body of the man she just killed.
Hayley looked at her, relieved. "How did you find us?"
"Your text got me halfway." The blonde nodded to Audrey. "Vamping here did the rest. Who are they?"
"Witches. Warlocks. Whatever."
With a nod, Rebekah looks around, noticing flashlights approaching in the distance. "There's more of them." She gives Hayley a look. "Run!" Reluctantly, Hayley takes her warning and runs ahead, making Rebekah look at Audrey. "Rey." She warned. "Now is not the time to be stubborn. Run, now!"
Audrey rolled her eyes but nodded, running after Hayley who paused to wait for her. Suddenly, horror fills Hayley's eyes, as two arrows hit Rebekah in the heart. "Rebekah!" She screamed.
"Hayley, run!" Audrey shouted, jumping in front of her as another arrow is shot.
"Audrey!"
She hears Hayley yell her name, but all Audrey could get out was choked splutter in response, as an arrow embedded itself in her stomach. Everything went quiet and black, and Audrey Gilbert's body dropped to the ground, as she died for the fourth time in her life.
* * * * * * * * * *
Audrey could remember each time she had died. When Klaus snapped her neck in Chicago, then when Mikael stabbed her at homecoming. Most recently, it had been when Klaus had snapped her neck again, and now this. An arrow in her stomach, trying to protect Hayley from whatever hunters Agnes sent after them. She let out a sharp gasp as her eyes opened, bolting upright where she lay, to see Rebekah stood by her. Her eyes drifted down to her necklace knowingly, before she looked to her stomach, seeing the arrow was gone. The wound was completely healed, the only reminder it happened being her ripped and bloody shirt. But something felt different, which made confusion fill her eyes, as she tried to figure out what it was.
"Thank God." Rebekah breathed out in relief, closing her eyes for a moment. "That thing is getting quicker, but it still takes it time. Gave me enough time to carry you back here, at least." She nodded to the necklace, before gesturing around, making Audrey realize they were back in the office. "How do you feel?"
"Something's wrong." She muttered, lifting her shirt to check she was truly healed. And she was, no wound to be seen. That's when realization hit her, and her hand flew up to touch above her heart. The pain she'd been feeling for four months, despite how small the necklace managed to make it, was gone. "I don't feel the dagger pain anymore."
"About tha--" Rebekah goes to say, when she hears someone walk in, and turns to see Klaus had appeared. "Wow! You abandoned your quest for power to help out your family! Having an off day?"
"Who took her, Rebekah?" Klaus said calmly, ignoring her comment.
That's when Audrey noticed Hayley wasn't with them. "Hayley's missing?"
"I don't know." Rebekah told her brother.
"What do you mean, you don't know?" Klaus asked as he stepped closer, his calm temper slowly disappearing. "And who killed her attackers?"
"I don't know!" Rebekah snapped at him. "I had an arrow in my heart. Audrey had one in her stomach. If it wasn't Hayley who killed them, then--" She is cut off as they all hear a wolf howling in the distance. "Lovely. Maybe her cousins will know where she is."
Rebekah brushes past him and heads outside, and Klaus looks at Audrey, going to say something when she just follows Rebekah silently. With a sigh, he turns and follows the two girls outside, all three pausing when they see Hayley slowly stumbling toward them. Her clothes were ripped and tattered, covered in dirt, a dazed and tired look filling her face. "Hayley." Klaus quickly walks over in front of her. "What happened? Tell me what happened."
"I can't remember." Hayley answers, her voice groggy.
Klaus checks her over carefully. "You've completely healed. There's not a scratch on you."
"One of the perks of being a werewolf, remember?" She shot back.
He shook his head with a frown. "No. Not that fast."
"Leave her alone." Rebekah walks over and wraps an arm around Hayley protectively, moving to sit her down on the steps. "It's the baby. The vampire blood-- Klaus' vampire blood-- in your system. It can heal any wound." She realizes, as Klaus gives her an incredulous look. "Your own child healed you." Audrey notices a smile twitch on Klaus's face at the thought, as Rebekah changes the subject back to Hayley herself. "How did you escape? You were outnumbered, unarmed? Those men were ripped to shreds."
"I think it was the wolf." The dazed girl said quietly. "I think it's trying to protect me."
Klaus points toward Hayley angrily. "The witches were supposed to protect you! When I get my hands on Sophie Deveraux--"
"No, this was Agnes." Audrey broke her silence, shaking her head. "This wasn't anything to do with Sophie."
"Fine!" He shrugged carelessly, the anger not leaving his eyes. "Agnes, Sophie, it's all the same to me! I'll slaughter the lot of them!"
"Not if Elijah gets there first." Rebekah shook her head.
Audrey eyes snapped onto her instantly. "Elijah? Did you find him? I that why I don't feel the dagger?" She rambled out.
"He's been in touch." Rebekah told her with a soft smile. "And he has a plan. All he asks is that we protect Hayley." She said, before reaching out and squeezing Audrey's hand. "And most importantly, that we look after you. He was very clear about that." Audrey felt a large smile tug at her lips, as her heart warmed in her chest, relief flooding through her now she knew he was okay.
Hayley smiled as she saw how happy Audrey look. "Hey, so... can we go home now? I'd really like to sleep for a few days..."
Hayley stands up and goes to walk, but her knees buckle beneath her, making her stumble and start to fall. Klaus rushes over and catches her before she can hit the ground, lifting her into his arms bridal style. "Ooh, I've got you, love. I've got you." And he carries her over to his car, Rebekah and Audrey following closely behind them.
I didn't actually think I'd get another update finished today, but I managed it. I'm really enjoying writing The Originals for Audrey, so there will likely be another update tomorrow. And good things happen in the next chapter, so that's something to look forward to.
I hope you all enjoyed!
