xi. Something Less Than the River to my Song

ALSO: keep in mind Doctor Who is about time travel and I'm throwing a bit of that in now, so if it doesn't make sense that's because it hasn't happened yet ;) You don't have to watch the show, don't worry it's not gonna be a super heavy part of the plot this is going to be the only chapter with Matt really in it

---

One month, twenty seven days

Sam's front door clicks, before seconds later Gabriel steps in, looking worried - or angry - or both.

Nervously, Sam clears his throat as he watches the angel's eyes flit between the duo in the kitchen, finally coming to settle on the man on the floor.

"Okay so...I'm assuming you're not cheating on me - because if you are you're doing a pretty pathetic job." He quietly says, before holding out a single red rose. "By the way - I'm sorry for being an ass and I bought you a flower - but we'll save that for later."

"Good plan." Sam breathlessly agrees, turning his attention to the extremely pale and breathless man laying in a pile of barf and tears on his floor.

Man, that's a sentence he never thought he'd hear.

"Demon?" Gabriel questions, placing the rose on the edge of the couch before flitting over to stare down at Matt, who just widens his eyes before vomiting once more at Gabe's feet. "Demon."

Sam nods, before his limited first aid training kicks in; he rushes to the fridge to remove an ice pack and fetch a glass of water, which he wordlessly hands to poor, poor Matt, who takes it without a word.

"That was," he gulps down some water, voice wavering. "What happened?"

Sam takes a deep breath in, preparing for the semi-usual talk. "Okay, this is going to sound crazy-"

"You were possessed by a demon, probably out to kill me - it didn't thankfully, and now you're here." Gabriel deadpans, dull golden eyes flashing in amusement as Matt splutters and spits out his water, before breaking down into a coughing - crying? - fit.

"Gabe." Sam hisses, gently placing a hand on the other man's shoulder, "Let's try not to scar him any further, eh?"

Pouting, Gabe kneels to softly pat the questionable man on the back, lowering his voice. "They're after me. They won't come after you again now that they know my location."

"Why me?" he demands, "I'm nothing special - well, I'm rather quite extraordinary - but in relevance to the subject I have no idea who either of you are!" his voice is still thick with tears and his eyes watery, but his attitude leads Sam to believe that somehow being possessed wasn't the worst thing to happen to him as of yet.

"Yep, he's pretty much back." Gabriel mutters, before grabbing the man by his lapels and pulling him - or more so pushing, considering the height difference - to his shaky feet. "You're Matt, right?"

"I'm the - yes, Matt. Me. The one who works at Oswald's." He replies, chugging the last of the water down before thrusting the cup at Sam. "Thank you. Where am I, anyhow?"

"Our house?" Sam looks down at the slightly shorter man, amazed at how quickly he can bounce back into his enthusiastic persona.

"Ah, yes, lovely house indeed. Do you have a wii?"

"A...yeah, why?" Sam frowns at the way a quirky smile overtakes Matt's face at the mention of the video game console.

"Just wondering, they're lovely." He clears his throat, before eyeing the landline sitting on Sam's counter island. "Can I use your phone to call my wife? I'm sure she's -oh."

"Oh?" Sam parrots, noticing how Gabriel's expression takes on an alarmed stature.

"She is going to murder me." Matt's voice returns to shaky and small, "Everything I did when I was - what was the word? Possessed? - wasn't me. I would never cheat. Especially not with-"

"Okay, irrelevant," Gabriel rubs his temples, "Just call her and take the wrath."

"Gabr-." Is all Sam can say before Arizona comes barreling out from his bedroom - all tooth and claw - to make the situation a good deal worse.

Once she spots Matt, she freezes in place, wide eyes studying the peculiar man before huffing a gentle bark.

Matt smiles a bit, although his eyes have misted back over and Sam debates handing him a tissue or at least telling him to blow his damn nose.

"Yeah, you're right." Matt mumbles, (to who? Sam'll never know), before making his way over to Sam's phone and slowly dialing a number.

The duo (and dog) watch in interest as he regains control of his breathing seconds before he chirps a greeting into the phone.

"Hullo! It's me, yes I know I'm supposed to be at work..." Sam tunes out after the first sentence, noting the conversation taking a darker turn. He tugs on Gabriel's sleeve, pulling him to their bedroom.

"What?" Gabe hisses once they're safely in there with the door locked.

"Don't eavesdrop." Sam chides, cracking the door open slightly to catch sight of Matt rubbing at his eyes whilst frantically speaking into the phone.

"Don't eavesdrop, he says, right as he opens the door to watch him!" Gabriel mumbles, moving his head underneath Sam's jaw to watch the scene unfold as well.

"Divorce?" he guesses, looking up at his boyfriend.

"Nah," Sam sighs, "well, hopefully not."

"Hopefully not is right," Gabriel flinches at the man's pained expression and the woman on the phone's words. He's able to hear the entire conversation thanks to angel ears, but Sam looks lost and concerned. "Possibly."

"What's the verdict?" Sam whispers.

"He slept with his co-worker, who by the way is barely in her twenties."

Sam wrinkles his nose, "Great. Fantastic. But it wasn't really him."

"Good luck explaining that to his livid wife."

"Did she catch them?"

"In their own bed."

"Oh." Sam cringes at how the odds are certainly not tilting in poor Matt's favor. "Oh."

"Yep." Gabriel pushes their door open the rest of the way when Matt sets the phone down, eyes frozen to the floor.

"Everything okay? Do you need a ride somewhere?" Sam gently asks, wondering how on Earth he got here in the first place.

"Home, please." His charming demeanor is long since gone, replaced by sorrow.

Sam nods, before clearing his throat to get Gabe's attention. "Gonna take him home."

"Me too." Gabriel announces, whistling once to Arizona. "I'm taking her with us now that every demon on the block probably knows where we live."

Nodding, Sam addresses Matt. "I'm just going to...make sure no demons can get in so give me five minutes?"

Matt nods, tired eyes not even the slightest bit curious.

---

Salt lines and several Devils' Traps later, they're all in the car with Gabriel and Arizona up front, while Sam, a barf bucket and Matt are in the back.

For the fourth (ish) time, Matt gurgles and vomits into the bucket, all three of them wincing when some splashes up.

"So you never mentioned you got carsick," Gabriel says, voice tight as if he's also fighting the urge to  barf.

"Sorry?" Matt replies weakly, resting his face over the bucket - which makes Sam's stomach turn because he can only imagine how to smell is over there compared to here. "I'm not entirely familiar with cars."

"Only another few minutes." Sam says (for the third time), praying he's actually right this time.

"No, it's two streets off this." Matt shakily points a slim finger somewhere off to their right.

Gabriel follows the instructions given (but not the rules of the road) as he swerves across the street, neither blinker giving away his intentions. Luckily, only two cars bother to honk at him, one however rolls down its window and the driver starts yelling obscenities as the trio turn down Matt's alleged street.

"That's my house," Matt points at a strangely simple white brick house with an apple tree and immensely pissed off woman out front.

"Oh my," Gabriel muses as he pulls to a stop, noting the way electricity seems to crackle around her. She's dressed simply enough, but her wild mane of golden curls and her burning eyes leads him to believe that she's seen plenty and is not one to put up with anything. "Does her hair always do that - or is that saved just for when she's angry?"

Matt swallows hard. "Always."

"C'mon," Sam opens his door and grabs Matt's wrist, pulling him out of the little car. He pointedly stares at Gabriel, who doesn't seem to get the hint and gets out anyhow.

The second Matt makes eye contact with her, it's almost like a slow motion movie. Everyone hangs on the edge of their seats to see what happens next, but no one expects her to storm up to him and hug him tightly with a small sob.

Matt looks horrified, then confused, then relieved when she doesn't pull back and slap him - or castrate him, as Gabriel will later say.

"River?" he whispers, wrapping his arms around her and burying his face into her hair.

She nods, before pulling back to arm's length. "Everything you told me, it's true - yeah?"

He looks hesitant; unsure why she's handling this so well. "You know I wouldn't do that to you," he murmurs, "it's all true - however improbable."

Sam awkwardly steps back and makes eye contact with Gabriel, who looks immensely bored and even imitates a vomiting gesture. Unfortunately, this doesn't go unnoticed by River.

"Oi! Blondie," she calls, interlocking her fingers with Matt's. "Or should I say, Gabriel, will you knock it off?"

"Sorry," he replies with a smirk, before paling, "beg your pardon, what'd you call me?"

"Your name." She replies lightly, raising her eyebrows at Gabe's confusion. "You don't remember me?"

Now it's Gabe's turn to play the skeptic as he nervously rings his hands and coughs awkwardly. "Uh, no?"

She cracks a small smile - lighting up her brilliant face and accentuating her golden curls. "You will," she assures him with a wink. "Oh don't take it like that!" she scolds at Matt's disproving face.

Gabriel slowly nods, nudging Sam in the ribs (or more like his hip thanks to the height difference), before leaning in to whisper, "Do you know her?"

"No." Sam breathes the word out the side of his mouth, forcing a cheesy smile at the two when they stare. "Sorry, what's your last name?" He finally asks.

"Song." She replies with a lazy smile.

Gabe narrows his eyes at her, before shaking his head. "No bells rung. Sorry. Nope."

Rolling her eyes, she interlocks her fingers and pulls Matt closer to her, whispering something to him. He nods and buggers off inside the house without another word, leaving the trio on the lawn.

"Well, thank you - for everything." River finally breaks the awkward silence, eyes honing in on Gabe.

Gabriel opens his mouth, but nothing comes out aside from a small squeak. "Right," Sam inputs, his own curiosity piquing, "he says you're welcome, and would also like to know why you're so relaxed with the concept of demons?"

"What! No I don't! That's all you!" Gabriel protests, finally finding his voice. "Well, no I do mean you're welcome but I'm not as nosy as him - although I am curious."

"You're more nosy than him." River points out, picking at her nails. "And what else am I supposed to do? I've seen a lot; might as well include demons. I know my husband - and he's not a cheater. He wouldn't leave me like that."

Looking over to Sam, an unpleasant feeling settles in Gabriel's stomach. His plan was - and still is - to get him back to reality and never associate with him again to protect him. Hell, it's a stupid plan but Sam's worth more to the angel alive than six feet under.

Okay so Matt is kinda an OC quite obviously based off a Doctor Who character - and I regret adding him. When I go over this I'm going to pull him out and replace his part with a different character because I feel like adding him was a dangerous ledge to walk on and I didn't nail it (and fell off).

So anyhow from here on it's gonna be strictly sabriel :3

Btw that whole River arc is probably gonna come back because I mean you never found out how she knows him ;)
