Ivy's excited feet pattered through the hallway to the door as she went to open it, she had expected to see her father and instead found her Grandmother. She made her dismay prevalent with a sigh before she greeted her grandmother unenthusiastically.
"What's the matter?" Siobhan asked her. "I just though you were Daddy." She replied honestly before walking into the living room and sitting on the settee. "He'll be here soon sweetheart, the traffic's busy today that's all, it's nearly Christmas so people are doing their shopping ready." Orla told her daughter from the kitchen.
"Mammy you need to get dressed." Ivy whined seeing Orla in a tracksuit with evident marks from the dishwater on her. "I know sweetheart, let me finish these dishes and then I'll go and get ready." Orla replied.
"You can go, I'll finish them for you." Her brother said from the doorframe leading into the living room. "Adam, you could've knocked." Orla replied after nearly jumping out of her skin. "Sorry." He chuckled. "Are you sure?" Orla asked him. "Yeah, you go and get ready." Orla thanked him, and hurried up the stairs to her bedroom.
Within fifteen minutes Orla was newly showered and drying her hair, she was about to style it when her niece walked in. "Uncle Adam asked if he could open the box of Crisps you've got in the cupboard." Scarlett asked. "Yeah, tell him he can help himself to anything." Orla nodded.
After an hour Orla was finally ready and was just in time to answer the knock on the door. She opened it to see Paul. "Hi." She greeted him. "Hi.., you look lovely." He replied, taking a moment before complimenting her. "You too, come in. Ivy's excited to see you." Orla told him before moving to close the door so that he could go in before her.
The second Ivy saw her father she ran up to him and hugged his legs as tightly as she could. "Daddy." She cheered, within a few seconds Paul had managed to scoop her up into his arms. Ivy immediately grabbed onto her fathers cheeks and began to squish them together. "Iv, you're gonna hurt him, he hasn't got your baby cheeks sweetheart." Orla warned her daughter. With a sigh Ivy removed her hands and slapped them down onto herself dramatically. "What're you watching?" Paul asked his daughter.
"Aristocats." She replied. "Your mammy's favourite that isn't it." Paul asked. Ivy nodded. "I like it too, Marie is the prettiest.. I want a cat, and I wanna give it a little bow like Marie." Ivy told her father who nodded knowingly before looking to Orla. "Ivy do you want to go pick out the shoes your wearing for the drive? Your dad can take you if you'd like." Orla asked her daughter. Ivy nodded and began pulling her father with her with all the night she could muster.
After five minutes Ivy returned in her father's arms wearing the shoes Orla had gotten her a few months ago. "Beautiful" Orla and her mother complimented as they entered the room. The second Paul placed her down Ivy ran to her cousin which lead Paul to the only empty spot on Orla's settees, right next to her.
They were silent for a few moments before Paul turned to her. "About Christmas." He began. "I've got all her things packed." Orla told him. "My parents want you there." He told her. "Oh.. Really?" She asked turning her head to face him fully. "Yeah, I understand if you don't want to." He nodded. "No, I'll go, it was just going to be me here by myself anyway." Orla replied. Paul nodded with a smile.
"When is Auntie Nell coming?" Ivy asked her parents. "She's meeting us there sweetheart." Paul replied making Ivy nod "Speaking of there we should probably get going. Beat the Traffic." Orla suggested. "I'll go get her bag, you can sort the car seat out." Paul told Orla who nodded.
Within ten minutes everyone was in two cars, Adam had taken Teddy and Scarlett into his which meant Siobhan was sat in the back next to her granddaughter while Orla was in the passenger seat directing Paul on where to go. With Adam's car following behind them. Ivy was chattering away to her grandmother about Bluey while Orla stared intensely at the google maps app on her phone. As they reached a red light Paul turned to look at Orla.
"How has she been?" He asked. "Good. This ballet's been a life saver for keeping her busy." Orla nodded. "What about you? How have you been?" Orla asked him. "Alright, just busy." He nodded, Orla could tell he didn't want to speak about it so she didn't press on it. "Have you been alright?" Paul asked her "Yeah, I've been doing a load of filming recently I don't think i have anything for a while, which is good, gives me more time with Ivy" Orla replied before sucking in a breath "I'm sorry, I didn't mean anything towards you. Fuck i'm sticking my foot in it today" Orla groaned, Paul chuckled lightly "Don't be daft, I know you don't mean anything rude." Paul assured her. Orla nodded softly.
Thankfully the traffic to the theatre Ivy was performing at wasn't bad, Once they were there Orla and Paul walked Ivy to her changing room and gave her her bag full of snacks and drinks to have if she needed them before walking back out to the parking area where Nell was stood next to Orla's mother. "Nellie I've missed you" Orla squeeled as she rushed to and then hugged Nell. "I missed you too" Nell replied before the two of them half pulled away from the hug for Nell to greet her brother as Orla pulled out her phone to check her messages hoping her eldest brother would have sent her a message to wish Ivy good luck.
She checked and saw absolutely nothing which caused her to roll her eyes and shut off her phone. Her brother placed a hand on her shoulder. "What's the matter?" Adam asked "Nothing, I'm fine, just checking the time." Orla lied, Adam looked down at her. "Take no notice, he's just being stubborn" Adam assured her "When isn't he?" Orla shot back.
"Tilly'll be here soon, focus on that" Adam told his sister who nodded. Eventually Tilly arrived, just in time for the parent's and guests of the kids performing to file in, luckily Orla had bought seats a few rows back so their views weren't terrible. The performance was surprisingly entertaining for a children's production, Ivy's face would light up every time she saw someone who was there for, Orla had a wide smile plastered across her face for every second Ivy was on stage.
Once the performance was over Ivy was let out to her parent's who had been one of the first few to queue up, Ivy immediately motioned for Paul to pick her up which he gladly did. "We are so proud of you Princess" Orla told her daughter who smiled widely showing one of her missing teeth. Once Tilly and Nell had seen Ivy and told her how brilliant they thought she was they left. Adam and Scarlett did the same while Adam carried Teddy over his shoulder. Siobhan's house was a short drive away so Paul dropped her off.
Ivy had fallen asleep quickly afterwards which left Paul focusing on the road and Orla on her phone until the radio began playing "Don't stand so close to me" by The Police which resulted in Orla humming to the intro before singing along. "I forgot how much you loved this song" Paul chuckled looking to her as she sang along enthusiastically. "It's brilliant" Orla replied during an interlude.
"Didn't you have it as your ringtone during rehearsals?" Paul chuckled "For a few weeks i changed it to Little Lies by Fleetwood Mac afterwards" Orla nodded "I still can't believe you tried to name Ivy Stevie" Paul added "It's a nice name" Orla rebutted. "It's got too much of a connotation" Paul said, saying the same thing he'd said years ago. As he said that they turned the street to Orla's house.
Once he'd parked up Paul got Ivy out of the car while Orla grabbed Ivy's things and opened the house so that Ivy could be carried up to bed. Once Paul came back down the stairs he noticed Orla's presence in the kitchen, her heels skirting around the floor as she scurried through a drawer. "D'you need some help?" Paul asked her Orla looked up at him. "Do you fancy a drink? I'm trying to find my bottle opener. If I can find it you can help yourself to anything" Orla asked.
"What've you got?" Paul asked "Look in the fridge, I've got so much in there, I just don't use it." Orla replied. After rummaging through it Paul managed to grab a can of his favourite drink. "I won't need that opener." Paul told her. Orla nodded and continued her search before finding it and using it on a Peach flavoured wine and taking the lid of it off with the bottle opener before getting herself a wine glass and pouring the bottle's remnants into it.
She sat herself down across from Paul who was sat on the far right end of her settee which left her on the far left. "You can chuck something on the telly if you want." Orla told him, picking up the remote and throwing it towards him. Paul nodded and put on Football which caused Orla to chuckle into her drink lightly so that he would not notice.
After half an hour Paul began to get visibly enthralled in the game as Orla watched him and scrolled through her phone. The two of them hadn't even noticed that they were slowly inching closer to each-other until Paul nearly spilt Orla's wine down her. "Fuck." He exclaimed "Its fine." She told him as she placed her wine glass onto the floor.
Once she sat back up she was met with Paul leaning towards her and kissing her, instead of pushing him away, she invited it. After a minute or so they began making their way up the stairs, "Are you sure you want to do this?" Orla breathed out after pulling away from his kiss. He nodded which resulted in him going back in for the kiss as they made their way through the corridor to Orla's bedroom. Almost slamming the door shut behind them.
