"Look how beautiful you look Iv" Orla gushed over her daughter as they both looked at her in the mirror, She was getting ready for another ballet performance.
"Daddy's coming? Isn't he?" Ivy asked her mother, Orla nodded, though she had no idea where he actually was. "I'm excited to show him and Auntie Ella and Auntie Tilly my dancing." Ivy added.
"They're going to love it Princess. Let's go get you shoes on." Orla told her daughter, Ivy quickly wriggled off of her lap and began rushing down the stairs, Orla got herself up though it took longer than it normally would with her stomach. She ran her hand over it as she made her way to her bedroom door, she turned the light off before going any further.
Ivy had already gotten her crocs on by the time Orla reached her. Orla smiled down at her daughter before going into the living room and grabbing the bag she had prepared for Ivy, then she grabbed her own and made her way for the door, she double checked the contents of her bag, making sure her phone, purse and lip-balm were in there. She and Ivy made their way to the car and then drove to the theatre Ivy would be performing in.
When they arrived they were greeted by Ella and Tilly who had come together. "Hi" Orla greeted after recieving a hug each from the two.
"Is Daddy with you?" Ivy asked her mother's friends who she called her Aunties, technically Ella was her godmother but Orla wasn't really a staunch believer in god.
Ella looked to Orla, her expressions told Orla exactly what she thought. "He's not picking up, I'm sure he's on his way." Orla told her, Ella gave a half-hearted nod which caused Orla to let out a small sigh, she was getting worried Paul would miss Ivy's performance, Ella wasn't helping.
"Ivy you look beautiful, doesn't she El?" Tilly told Ivy, trying to get her mind off of the fact her dad still hadn't arrived. Ella nodded in agreement giving Ivy a warm smile. "I'll take Ivy to her teacher, does she have a bag?" Tilly offered.
Orla handed Tilly the bag and gave her an appreciative smile, she watched as Tilly walked Ivy inside. "You okay?" Ella asked Orla.
Orla shook her head. "I really don't want him to miss this, She was always upset when he missed things like this when he was filming but this is like, even bigger because she's getting a certificate at the end. It hurts me to see her cry." Orla said as she looked at Ella.
Ella considered what she was going to say. "Look, If he doesn't come I'll stay over at yours and watch her."
"I can't ask you to do that El." Orla began but Ella shook her head.
"I'm offering, and besides, I'm her godmother, treating her after a boy upsets her's gonna be a regular thing." Ella joked, Orla chuckled softly.
A short while later Orla, Tilly and Ella went inside and took their seats, every three minutes Orla was checking her phone to see if a message from Paul had arrived.
It hadn't, Luckily Ivy didn't notice while she was on stage, though the second she walked up to her mother and aunt's with her backpack on her back her lip began to wobble.
"Oh sweetheart come here." Orla beckoned, Ivy rushed to her mother, reaching up for Orla to carry her, despite it taking a moment Orla did just that.
"I wanted him here." Ivy said before bursting into tears, Orla began smoothing her daughters head as she walked to Tilly and Ella a few feet away.
Ella was the first one to notice Ivy was crying "You did amazing Iv." Ella told her. "I filmed it, you can show Daddy if you'd like." Ella offered, that seemed to mellow the crying down a bit.
"Pass her here, I'll carry her." Tilly told Orla, worried she or the baby would get hurt. Orla gave Ivy to Tilly and took a moment to stretch her back. "You were beautiful Ivy, we're all very proud of you. Mummy's even bought a frame for your certificate to go up on the wall." Tilly told the girl.
"I have, and it's going in the living room, with all the photos of me and you, and family." Orla told her daughter, Ivy nodded, but continued to bury her head into Tilly's shoulder.
As they continued walkjng out of the theatre and to the car park Orla got her phone out and tried to call Paul, He didn't pick up. That got Orla angry. Ella had come to the theatre from a Taxi, though she could still drive so she told Orla she would drive instead. After getting Ivy sat in her car seat and saying goodbye to Tilly, Ella drove them back to Orla's house.
Paul still wasn't there, Orla had managed to get Ivy up into her bedroom, she gave Ella the TV remote for her to choose whatever Ivy wanted to watch until she fell asleep, she went down stairs and started making herself, Ivy and Ella some popcorn. That was when he entered.
"What are you making?" He asked Orla, her back turned to him. She turned to face him.
"Popcorn, to cheer our daughter up after you missed her big day." Orla told him, her anger with him was prevalent in her voice.
Paul gulped. "Look I didn't mean to miss it, my phone died, and by the time I found out the time I'd rushed onto the tube, but then it got stuck for a solid half hour, I've only just gotten off."
"You're not even Sorry." Orla scoffed.
"I am." Paul insisted. Orla shook her head
"No, you're not. I told Ella this, She used to be upset whenever you missed things even when she was little, but now that you're finally living with her, she hoped you wouldn't miss it. It hurts me to see her upset Paul, you haven't just hurt her, you've hurt me too." She told him, her eyes glassy.
"I really did try." He said apologetically.
"How am I supposed to believe you?" Orla asked tilting her head.
"You think I'd lie to cover my own back?" Paul questioned, stunned Orla would think that of him.
"You've lied before." Orla retorted.
"That was just because I knew you'd say no." Paul defended himself, it made her sound like she was his mother and he was a teenager with a terrible B.O issue.
"I'm going upstairs." Orla sighed, wiping the tears that had fallen from her eyes.
"Orla please." Paul almost pleaded, he went to grab Orla's hand but she forced it out of the way and turned towards the stairs.
"No, you weren't there, you didn't see her lip wobble once she realised you weren't there, you didn't see her burst into tears and bury her head into Tilly's shoulder. She's finally stopped crying, you are not upsetting her again. Not tonight." Orla told him as she made her way to the stairs.
Paul watched as she walked up the stairs, he'd felt bad before but now he felt even worse.
